rachelleb.com 10th anniversary

Last week this site quietly celebrated its 10th anniversary. My first post here was on July 19, 2001. I was living in San Diego at the time and I remember jumping on the iWalt blogging bandwagon. Walt and I shared and office, and I thought “what the heck?” and gave it a whirl. Here I am 10 years later.

I didn’t really do much to celebrate, but I did visit the Wayback Machine. This is a tool that lets you see snapshots of any website from various places in time. Like last year, as I browsed through the history of rachelleb.com, I reminisced about how in the lifetime of this blog I have changed jobs 5 times, moved to New York, moved to Chicago, co-founded Chicagoist, made friends, made more new friends, lost track of friends, met Dallas, got engaged, bought a condo, got married, and on and on. Pretty nutso!

I took a few random screengrabs of this site while I was at the Wayback Machine. Click for larger screenshots.

Happy 9th Anniversary, rachelleb.com

Today marks the 9th anniversary of this here blog. My first post was on July 19, 2001. I was living in San Diego at the time.. and if I start to browse through, I reminisce about how in the lifetime of this blog I’ve changed jobs 5 times, moved to New York, moved to Chicago, cofounded a successful Chicago city blog, met Dallas, got him to move to Chicago, got engaged, bought a condo, and on and on… but I’ve got things to do and not hours to spend reflecting.. so I’ll just leave it at that. Happy Anniversary to me!

rachelleb.com on the iPad

A couple weeks ago Pek let me play around with his iPad. Pretty cool! Since then a few other guys around the office have also gotten iPads. I think they’re neat, but I don’t see myself getting one for a few more generations of it. Both so Apple can add more features and also so people can sort out what they’re good for and program apps and stuff for this new device.

Famous blogger RachelleB used to live in Appleton

A few months ago I noticed that I was getting hits from jefflindsay.com. I never heard of Jeff Lindsay so I went over and found out he is a guy who lives in Appleton, WI and is passionate about the area and has posted a lot of information about the city online. He also has a blog about Appleton.

Jeff has a comprehensive list of historical facts about Appleton and famous people who have lived there. For example- Houdini lived in Appleton, they had the nation’s first hydroelectric station and the first home with electricity and the first hotel with electricity and the first electric cable car, Lawrence University is the second oldest coeducational college in America, Senator Joseph McCarthy got his political start in the area, John Bradley is from Appleton and is one of the soldiers raising the flag in the famous photo from Iwo Jima, Alex Rodriguez played for the Appleton Foxes, oh… and … what’s this? Famous blogger RachelleB used to live in Appleton.

I did live in Appleton on Drew Street and on State Street for a few years. I found it really flattering that he included me in such a list. And Dallas had fun teasing me for about a week saying things like “Oh, what? Store brand pasta is not good enough for famous blogger RachelleB from Appleton!??!”
