Nintendo and Netflix Game and Movie Night

June 11th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Last week I hosted a movie-and-game-night-themed party at my house in conjunction with Nintendo and Netflix. As you’ve probably heard, Nintendo and Netflix now have a partnership that allows you to watch movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix on your Wii console.

The folks from Nintendo let me choose where to order food from and I chose Pizza Metro. I love the pizza there and I miss hanging out at the counter at 1 a.m. like Dallas and I used to when I lived nearby. The pizza came just in time, right before the guests. Nintendo also provided a lot of movie candy – think Junior Mints, Raisinettes, M&Ms, Dots and Twizzlers – as well as some really delicious movie popcorn.

We started off the party by eating and drinking wine, of course, and then I showed everyone how to stream Netflix through the Wii. Instead of watching a full-length movie, we watched some really early episodes of 30 Rock. It was a school night, afterall!

After that we played an epic game of Bags/Cornhole on the Wii. I chose this game because up to 16 people can play at one time, so we would all be able to play at once, without anyone sitting out. For the 8 of us, it went tournament style and lasted a lot longer than I was expecting, but it was fun. Kate was the big winner in that game. We also played a game called TV Show King, which I thought was a blast.

At the end of the night everyone got a gift from Nintendo – point cards (kind of like gift cards) for downloading free content for the Wii or Nintendo DS. Also, they had originally offered to give me a 3-month trial membership to Netflix so I could host the party. Since I already have a membership to Netflix and didn’t need the trial, I was able to give the trial to one of the party guests. Yay! Fun fun fun!

Last but not least, here two 30-second movies I made using my still camera and a Flip Video camera that Nintendo gave me to help me become my own movie maker. I also used Animoto to compile the movies and photographs together with music.

Disclosure: For this event Nintendo provided Nintendo 2,000 Points cards, a Flip video camera, as well as all the food and a free 3 month Netflix subscription.

Last Saturday Nancy and Riley came down and brought some boxes and helped me pack. Riley loved Dallas and was having fun playing with him and hugging him and kissing him. She was only shy for about 5 minutes when she first got to the house. After packing up most of my books, we went to Pizza Metro for some slices of pizza (I’m going to miss that place!) and then went to Wicker Park. We could only stay at the park for a few minutes because it started raining. Nice to see Nancy & Riley again and extra thankful for the boxes and the help packing!

Jess was in town this weekend for a visit. She’s had bad luck coming out in the past, where she has had to cancel trips. The first time she helped me move here but had to rush back home the next morning for a family emergency and the second time she had her plane tickets all purchased and everything then another emergency came up and she had to cancel. This time, finally, it was all good. Good weather, great times.

Quick rundown of what we did – Thursday night we went out for dinner at El Tapatio. Note: If the waiter asks you if you want a JUMBO sized margarita, say “no” even if he says it’s a great value, which it is. Those things are both big and strong.

On Friday we went to dinner at Kitsch’n then went to a party at Erin’s house. There were more photos, but that snickers one is the only one that can be shared. Sorry. What happens at Erin’s house stays at Erin’s house.

Saturday we went to the Bongo Room for breakfast. Jess had a breakfast burrito, but I’m always tempted by the crazy pancake/french toast creations. Pictured above is the Chocolate Tower French Toast, which is composed of bittersweet chocolate chunk bread, maple marscapone, banana creme brulee sauce, bananas, and shaved chocolate. Afterwards we dragged our bloated stuffed bellies to Akira to try on clothes and shoes, which I wouldn’t recommend after binging like that unless you want to just stand there in an ill-fitting halter top going “oh, im so fat!” like we did. We headed home to rest since we only got a couple hours of sleep, got a pedicure and then went out to dinner with Dallas, my brother, and my sister-in-law.

On Sunday we tried to burn off all those calories by walking through Millennium Park, through Grant Park, down to Buckingham Fountain, then all the way up the lake to Navy Pier. Hopefully it helped a little! It was a nice relaxing last day.

We miss having Jess around already, but hopefully this trip convinced her she’s got to visit more!

Some food porn brought to you by Pizza Metro. I’ve said how much I love them and having them so close to my apartment. We’ve spent countless nights after going out sitting at the counter at 2am waiting for our slices. Sometimes we call ahead and by the time we get there the order is ready. I am in love with the potato rosemary pizza. It’s so good. Sometimes we even sprinkle more rosemary on it when we get home. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I ever move out of this neighborhood and don’t have Pizza Metro so close!

Pizza Metro

Pizza Metro is by far my favorite neighborhood pizza place. The pizza, including the slices, are made to order, so it’s fresh and the prices are really affordable. My favorite is the potato rosemary pizza.

Also, Pizza Metro is open really late so there have been 100 times when I’ve been in there after bar close ordering pizza and staring into space trying to follow the employees Spanish conversations. One time they caught me laughing at something they said and asked me “habla espanol?”. My response was “uh.. un poquito.”
