Architectural Anarchy Launch Party

May 10th, 2011 · 2 Comments

A couple weeks ago Jess asked Alden and I to attend an event that would benefit Association House, an organization that she is on the board of. We both said we were interested and so we went to the web site to buy tickets. It was then that I realized that this was a launch party for Architectural Anarchy, a 20,000+ square foot venue space filled with antiques and industrial furniture and salvaged goods in Pilsen. But not only that, the party was showcasing a ton of wedding vendors and was really targeted towards wedding industry professionals and brides-to-be. How ironic that I avoided all of this sort of thing while planning my wedding and then as soon as my wedding was over, I was at a wedding planning event! Oh well. It was for a good cause.

Jess was kind of all over the place for the event. She checked in with us a bunch and hung out, but at the same time she was running around selling raffle tickets and greeting people at the door. Alden and I started out with a look through an antique shop that is in the same building.. then free drinks, more free drinks, free food, and more free drinks. Haha.. kidding… but not really. Goose Island was one of the event sponsors and they had an area set up where you could taste 4 different things they made and each was paired with one of their high-end beers. All of these were really good. It made me want to go eat at the pub, but I’ve never eaten anything I really loved there.

We also ate at a “pop up” restaurant sponsored by Purekitchen. This was an area of the space where they set up a kitchen and seating, even a separate bar area. 20,000 square feet is big. You can do almost anything in that amount of space. We had samples sizes of chopped spinach salad, radish, hard-boiled egg, crispy spring onion; steamed walleye pike, asparagus panzanella, fermented carrot slaw; and allspice semifreddo, candied smoked hazelnuts, preserved cherry aigre-doux.

In another room they even had a bridal fashion show. Since this was a wedding event, there were different DJs and musicians in each room. Some rooms had crazy lighting. Every room had bars set up.

There was one whole room that was just desserts. Like truffles and cupcakes as far as the eye could see. This was my favorite room, of course.

The raffle was to win a party at Architectural Anarchy for you and 35 of your friends. With all the food and music and drinks provided by the featured vendors, the party was valued at $10,000! Alden and Jess and I must have bought at least 10 tickets but the luck wasn’t with us that night! Wah.

One of the vendors was a photo booth rental place called Shutterbooth. We could not pass this up. In fact, we visited the photo booth four times! My favorite frame from the night:

The Jury Is In

August 17th, 2010 · No Comments

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted today of one count: lying to the FBI. The jury has been out deliberating for 14 days. The jury was deadlocked on the other 23 counts against Blago.

I’ve been waiting to post this photo til we heard news. Ironically, the photo was taken in Pilsen, right after the YumUniverse party and dinner at Nightwood. I posted about these two things earlier today.

Nightwood

August 17th, 2010 · No Comments

After the YumUniverse party, Jess and Alden and I headed to Nightwood a restaurant by the same people that do Lula in Logan Square that I’ve always wanted to try. It was about 90 degrees outside at 8 p.m. and the only seating they had without a wait was outside, so we just decided to suck it up and sit out there. Here are some photos from our meal.. they were taken in streetlight lighting, so they’re not the greatest, but you get the idea.

To start, we got biscuits with whipped honey butter and a heirloom tomato, arugula and parmesan salad with aged balsamic and rich olive oil.

For our main courses Jess and I split the wood-grilled whole Wisconsin trout with salsa verde, black beans, sweet corn, and pico de gallo. It was a tasty dish and nice and light for the summertime. Alden had the roasted Gunthrop Farm duck leg with radicchio and black olives. I had a taste and it was very good. Alden said he liked it but there were so many olives, it was a little overwhelming.

For dessert we got brown sugar vanilla gelato and blackberry gelato to try to beat the heat.

I liked Nightwood fine. I think that I would have had a better experience if I wasn’t sweating buckets through my whole meal. It didn’t help that we were seating with our backs against a brick wall that had absorbed heat all day. It felt like leaning against a heater. I’ll definitely want to go back the next time I’m in Pilsen!

YumUniverse Launch Party

August 17th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Last week Alden, Jess and I went to a launch party for the YumUniverse blog.

YumUniverse is about making clean food choices and about being healthy and eating well. The site soft launched in the spring and is now ready for the big time. I thought that YumUniverse was all vegan as well, but I just read that their “contributors include steak-loving chefs, raw food fanatics, vegan dabblers, insatiable athletes, in-demand moms and even imaginative kids.”

The YumUniverse party took place at the Chicago Urban Art Society in Pilsen. The event was really well attended with more than 200 people RSVPing that they’d be there.

Some unique things at this party: The Rub Hub was giving free massages.

And there was all these crazy earth-oriented art installations around the party space.

Like any good party, there was a lot of food. All of this food happened to be vegan and raw and delicious. There were a lot of desserts, which my sweet tooth loved.

There was also a lot of booze at the YumUniverse party. It was all small tasting portions, but after a few shots of straight-up vodka, it’s not like you need to have a full glass of anything. We tried fair trade certified quinoa vodka (with lemon and elderflower), organic and sustainable wine from Hahn Family Wines, and did a acai spirit tasting thanks to VeeV. There were a few other liquor tables, but we didn’t want to stand in line to try them out.

After a while, we decided to leave the party and get some dinner. The raw vegan finger foods were not building a good base for all the liquor we were being offerred! But, it was cool to check out and I’ll be keeping my eye on the YumUniverse site.

Catching Up With Old Friends at Simone’s

February 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Matt was back in town last week so on Wednesday he got a bunch of people together at Simone’s in Pilsen. Matt and I used to work together at FeedBurner and Google and has since moved to Seattle, so it was good to see him again. A few of my other coworkers from those places that I hadn’t seen for some time also came and it was fun to catch up.

Eric, Jessie, Alden, Rachelle, Joe, Jessica, Matt

I also got to see Blagica, who I still keep in touch with online, but don’t get to see in person much any more.

Simone’s has a great beer list, which we sampled heavily. Matt also ordered up an assortment of food like empanadas, pizzas, fries and mozzarella sticks. Later on after a lot of people had left, Sam, who was taking care of us that night, appeared like this: Flaming.

And Matt looked something like this: Day-am!

He blew the fire out and we drank the shots and they were delicious. Sam’s own creation, they tasted like black forest cake. I can’t remember all of the ingredients, but there was Bailey’s and Grand Marnier on the top (which is the part that was lit on fire). Sam would then sprinkle cinnamon over them. Can you see it?

It looks like the shots aren’t on fire because of the flash, but they are. Look again.

We had a couple round of these shots. They were so good. Alden wanted to drink a pint glass of them. But he didn’t.

After a few rounds Matt started to look like this. (He had just flown in that day on a 6 a.m. flight!)

And the bar started to look alien.

Fun night. Nice catching up with friends. And I liked Simone’s, too. It’s somewhat hard to get to, but if you live down by Pilsen or the neighboring hoods you should definitely check it out. The owners of Simone’s are the ones opening Nice Slice Pizza Bar at the end of my block, so I’m very hopeful now.
