Happy Birthday, Adam!

Blowing out the candles!
Last minute, we decided to join Adam and a bunch of other friends at Piece for pizza and beer. Makai was being kind of…. one second he was happy and the next he was screaming his head off for no reason. We made the decision while he was napping and were not sure what would happen when he woke up. Luckily he was on perfect behavior at both Piece and when we went to Lucky’s afterwards so some of the guys could play darts!
Dallas thought he hadn’t been to Piece for a year or so.. and I’d say that I haven’t been there for years (multiple..2008?), even though we’re around it often. They had a cleverly named beer called “Marketing Ploy,” which is a collaboration with Three Floyds. The beer was good and many at our table enjoyed it. To be honest, though, I think that the pizza was more of a marketing ploy than the beer. Piece was featuring a special pie that was made in collaboration with Honey Butter Fried Chicken and had their fried chicken on the pizza. Everyone raves about honey butter’s fried chicken, but this pie was nothing special. I think everyone preferred the other pizzas we ordered.
Anyway, it was nice to be back at Piece and out with friends. And to have a well-behaved baby that everyone gushed over. And I’d never been to Lucky’s and liked it’s cool, relaxed vibe.

Tommy & I have the same taste in shoes.
For Danny’s birthday we went out for dinner at Piece, a NewHaven-style thin crust pizzeria and brewery in Wicker Park. Doug and Naoko’s son Tommy and Pete and Allison’s daughter Abby hit it off. Abby is about to turn 3 and Tommy turned 2 back in June. I played with them a lot last night. They were hugging and dancing and throwing an origami ball that Naoko made. Piece is a pretty loud place, so even when they were screaming they didn’t cause a commotion. It was fun to see Tommy again and I’d only met Abby once when she was a tiny baby. She’s so cute. And now Pete and Allison have a second daughter, Lucy, who is only about 2 months old. Hopefully I’ll see her again before she is 3!

After Piece some of us went to The Long Room for a couple more drinks. It was fun, but we were tired from the night before, so we headed home around midnight.

On Thursday night most of the Chicagoist staff met up at Piece for pizza and beers. Except I somehow managed to stick to salad and diet soda (whoo hoo for my diet!). It’s always fun to get everyone together and remind each other that we’re real people behind all the emails and forum posts and site posts. We also got to meet 6 of the 8 newest contributors, which was really cool.

After I got back from Wisconsin I went to Piece to celebrate Lorie’s birthday. Piece has really good New Haven style pizza (not sure exactly what that style means), that I ate way too much of. When they started their live band karaoke at 11pm they tried to charge us a cover so we left.
