Summer Weekends in Logan Square

August 31st, 2009 · No Comments

The last day of August. This summer has gone by so fast. And it’s been such an odd summer. I’ve had a few conversations with friends about this lately, how this summer has been odd. The weather has been very mild, not hot at all. We’ve been so busy, yet when I think about it, there are a lot of friends that I haven’t seen for a long time. What were we doing? How did the summer slip by? I feel like there were only a few weekends this summer where I just hung around the neighborhood. Even if I had plans, I tried to go to the Logan Square Farmers Market as much as possible. Many times I met Jess over on the Boulevard to browse sales and the market.

A few times Jess and I also attended Summer Sessions on the Square. There was just one this past Saturday. I think there is one more in September and then they’re done for the year. This is a fun way to support the neighborhood. People pack wine and picnics and head to The Sqauare where bands play. Lots of families, lots of groups of friends just hanging around and enjoying the weather and music. The suggested donation is $5.

We were finishing hiking right around the time that the guys were finishing golfing so we decided to meet up with them for lunch. They ran and grabbed sandwiches, chips and drinks from the store and met us at Wononscopomuc Lake (also known as Lakeville Lake), the deepest lake in Connecticut. Molly and Janie are Hotchkiss School alum so they took us to that part of the lake, which was nice because there were only about 3 other people there. We sat around and ate our lunch and then went for a swim in the lake. There was a lot of boys throwing boys off the dock sort of shenanigans… which I was fine with, as long as no one was throwing me of the dock!

On Sunday my brother’s family came down and we all went to Montrose Beach. I contemplated North Avenue Beach, but it gets so crowded. Montrose is more like a park and beach and I thought there would be better chances of getting parking places and a good spot to park ourselves. We played on the beach, went for a long bike ride, took Milo to the dog beach, walked and picnicked. It was a fun day.

Yesterday was Google Chicago’s summer picnic at The Green at Grant Park. There was lots of food and drinks and mini golf. Pretty much everyone sucked at mini golf, but part of the reason was that there were tons of kids running all around grabbing balls and stuff. Yeh, that’s my excuse. I played a game with Dick and Jessica and I think I came in last. It is a really tough course. No edges, so the ball rolls into flowerbeds and onto the next green and everywhere.

The Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park was designed by Frank Gehry and is thought to be the most sophisticated outdoor concert venues of its kind in the United States. The pavilion has a billowing “headdress” of stainless steel ribbons connected to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes over the lawn seating area. When not in use, the seating area acts as a “great lawn” in where it’s fun to picnic or toss a frisbee around. Both of which we did today when my family came down.
