Yesterday we went to Wisconsin to go to my little brother’s 30th birthday party. Not so little! There were lots of family and friends. Lots of kids, actually, running around everywhere. We ate tons of food and desserts and drank a lot of beer. For some reason he got a lot of beer as gifts. We brought him Fat Tire and Oberon, two beers he can’t get in Wisconsin. We also got him an Amazon gift certificate. I thought he’d get a lot of gag gifts, but there was just one: a box of Just For Men hair dye from our cousin Kelly. All the other gifts were really nice. After the party died down a bit, the people who were left all played Rock Band, which was a gift from my sister-in-law, Amanda. My brother’s best friend, Brian, bought this random bag of liquor that we were drinking shots of later on. .. or at least I was, Dallas was our DD. It should also be noted that my brother has been growing his beard out for the month of November. You can track it on Facebook if you are his friend.

Question for Photographers: Does anyone know why my flash is throwing such a harsh shadow? Is it something I need to adjust on my camera? Or something that can only be fixed by getting an external flash? I don’t remember it being so bad before, but now it is making be crazy.

Jake and Natalie’s Wedding Rehearsal Dinner

October 16th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Jake and Natalie asked me if I’d take photographs at their wedding rehearsal dinner last month. I know Jake from when I worked at FeedBurner and Google and had met his fiance, Natalie, a few times before they asked me. Their wedding photographer, of course, was too expensive to have come out for the rehearsal and they didn’t want to worry about photos, so they asked if I’d be willing to do it. I agreed. They’ve actually been married for more than a month now, but I didn’t want to post anything until they were back from their honeymoon (to Hawaii) and got the photos I took. I took many, many photos, but these are just a couple of my favorites.

I think Natalie designed most of the wedding and Jake got to do the rehearsal. Jake’s very into politics and this being an election year, they went with a political theme. Their invitations (below) were really neat and then they got napkins and banners and pins for people to wear that all completed the political theme. I had a fun time. Jake kept telling me to drink more and eat more so it was kind of like I was a working guest at the party. At the end a lot of the family and friends made toasts and roasts to the couple. Funny that a common theme was “Natalie and Jake have been together for 4+ years, it’s about time they got married.. what took so long!?” I felt like I should go hide under the table lest they should start yelling at me to get married already! :)

Riverfront Arts Center, Stevens Point, WI

September 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

One day my dad and I visited my mom’s office. My dad had been there many times, but it was my first time visiting. I was able to see where my mom works and to meet her coworkers. She is the Head Cashier and Customer Service Coordinator at the UW-Stevens Point University Store and happens to love going to her job every single day, which is a really lucky thing… and great. She deserves it.

After touring the office we headed over to the Riverfront Arts Center, which is located at Pfiffner Pioneer Park in Stevens Point, WI. We saw an exhibit by a photographer named John Hartman. From his site it looks like he is a professional portrait photographer, but the exhibit we saw was all panoramic photographs that he did around Stevens Point. I thought it was a really great exhibit.

The photo above was taken right outside the Riverfront Arts Center on the bank of the Wisconsin River.

Mini Photobooks

August 20th, 2008 · 4 Comments

For some of the last few weddings we’ve been to I’ve taken a bunch of photos and as part of our wedding gift, I’ve made a mini photobook of the photos I took. With Flickr & Qoop it’s really easy to make these custom books. I know my photos aren’t as good as hired, professional wedding photographers, but many times I’ve been there for days and days of wedding activities that the professional photographer missed. So, this little mini album encapsulates a wedding weekend, not just a day. Also, many times the professionals take a while, whereas these books can be done very quickly. Friends have been really happy to have some photos in their hands right away.

This weekend we are going to Maine for Rob & Colleen’s wedding. (Rob and Colleen are on the left in the last photo of Killian and Liz’s wedding album.) They live on an island off the Maine coast and I’m really looking forward to the trip. I saw Rob a few weeks ago when he was visiting for the saling race to Mackinac (he does it every year). He asked if I can take photos at the wedding and I said of course I would. I’m betting I’ll have enough to make another one of these little books.
