Dallas loves steak, so while in New York I took him to the best steak place around, Peter Luger Steakhouse. I didn’t actually really pay much attention to Peter Luger’s when I lived in New York, but when I was leaving Tien insisted I go and it was awesome. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. For 24 years in a row, Zagat has named Luger’s New York’s No. 1 Steak House. As well, they have a Michelin star rating, and in 2002, Luger’s was named to the James Beard Foundation‘s list of American Classics.

Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Peter Luger’s has an old-school, German beerhaus decor. The restaurant has been open since 1887, so that makes sense. They serve only the finest USDA PRIME meat. Members of the owner’s family select the sides of beef personally. Then the meat is brought back and dry aged on site.

We went to Peter Luger’s on Sunday afternoon and a lot of people around us were ordering burgers and fries and other more lunch-like things, but we decided not to vary from the standard order: USDA PRIME Porterhouse for two cooked medium rare, creamed spinach for two, and Luger’s special German fried potatoes for two. Dallas also got a beer. I had to have a bloody mary because when we were waiting to check in at the bar area I could see a guy making the mix and it looked delicious.

I remember watching an episode of the Sopranos about 4 or 5 years ago where they tell Christopher that after he’s a “made man” he has to buy them dinners at Peter Luger’s, which was going to be really expensive. I remember commenting to Dallas that I’d been there and we talked about it a bit. I told him someday we’d go there together…. and finally we did.

So, I had this list of things I wanted to do and places I wanted to visit one last time before I left. And most of it I’ve covered. A couple weeks ago Tien said “Peter Luger’s isn’t on that list, but it should be. I’m making us reservations!” and he did. And I’m so glad! I don’t think anyone who’s been there would dispute that it’s the best steakhouse in New York. It’s been voted #1 by Zagat’s every year since at least 1986. The food was so delicious. For starters we had shrimp cocktail and the onion and tomato plate. Then we had medium rare steak for 3 and medium steak for 2. For sides we had German fried potatoes, creamed spinach and fries… then dessert, of course! Key lime pie and a fudge sundae to split. Oh, and our waiter Stanley was this cute old man. Efficient, but nice.

Jeannette, Yvan, Tien, and Jess surprised me with a few New Yorkish going away gifts too. Some tumblers with the subway lines, a magnet that is an old subway token, a New York neighborhoodie, and some hot pink boy-cut panties that say rachelleb.com on the back!! Totally unexpected! Thank you for everything, guys! I will miss you dearly!

Single Girls’ Valentines Night Out

February 14th, 2004 · 40 Comments

Supper
Supper, East Village, Manhattan

Julie, Stephanie, Jess and I spent a single girls’ Valentines Day night out eating and drinking wine at Supper. Ironically, I’d been there once before on a date and always wanted to go back but hadn’t gotten the chance. The food was delicious.. there wasn’t anything anyone ordered that I didn’t love (and I tried it all!). Supper is tiny and has an open kitchen where you can watch all of the food being prepared. And if you make friends with the guy who takes the food from the kitchen to the tables he will give you tons of extra chocolate on your dessert (chocolate-doused hazelnut pannacotta). YUM. Oh, and they were playing the new Outkast CD which I thought was awesome.

Just wondering. When you start plopping down $50 for a meal on a semi-regular basis without batting an eye, does that mean you’ve been in New York too long or simply mean you’re becoming a true New Yorker? Seems like I’ve been doing this too much lately.. and with a reservation at Peter Luger‘s this week it’s not stopping anytime soon. Well, maybe when I move. I think it’s been happening more lately because when I go out I want to get everything because I know that I won’t be getting back to that restaurant any time soon.
