Penny’s

Penny’s, Wicker Park, Chicago

A good thing about living on the Blue Line again, and just a few stops past where I used to live, is that we can quickly go to Wicker Park and visit the restaurants that we used to like going to when I lived in East Ukrainian Village.

Penny’s is a pan-Asian restaurant with a few locations around Chicago. We really like it and used to order food to be delivered to my old house a lot… until that one time when the delivery driver’s car got stolen. On Friday night we went to Penny’s and had huge bowls of soup. Hit the spot since we’ve both been sick and the weather is turning cold again.

Heh, I was just looking at posts I’ve made about Penny’s on rachelleb.com and came across this old one from when I took my family there. Look how young Stephanie and Jessica are!

Margaret met up with Erin & I to grab something to eat at Penny’s* then a pint at Pint. Then Erin & I headed over to Double Door to catch Rockit Girl‘s farewell show. I heard the reason the band is breaking up is because the lead singer is pregnant, but I don’t know if that’s true. Fun time. Off to listen to their mp3s now.

* I used to get delivery from Penny’s all the time but now I hardly ever eat their food.. ever since that delivery driver’s car was stolen and they won’t deliver to my house any more. Or.. at least that one time after waiting what I thought was an appropriate amount of time, I tried to call and they wouldn’t answer the phone. Now I’m afraid to try again!

I saw nothin!

February 22nd, 2005 · 7 Comments

Tonight we ordered from Penny’s for dinner and while I was signing the credit card receipt, the delivery guy’s car was stolen. That’s right, right in front of my house. He’d left the car on while he brought the order to my door.

When Did You Learn to Use Chopsticks?

A few weeks ago I took my family out to Penny’s Noodle Shop by the Damen Blue Line stop. My niece Stephanie is 8 and we were showing her how to use chopsticks. We positioned her hand and had her practice picking things up. I remember saying “you might not be able to eat anything yet, but if you practice with the chopsticks every time you’re at a restaurant that has them, then someday you’ll learn to use them.” Then my niece proceeded to eat her entire meal with chopsticks. And ramen noodles aren’t exactly the easiest thing to eat.

I think that Stephanie using chopsticks especially impressed me because I didn’t learn to eat with them until I moved to California when I was 24. I remember sitting at Tokyo House (also my first sushi) with Mark and Ryan while they made me practice picking things up with chopsticks. The town that I grew up in didn’t have a Chinese restaurant until after I moved away from it when I was 19. I remember working in Appleton and my entire department loved this place called Chef Chu’s. It was my first experience with Chinese food and I remember not liking it.. but threatening to throw me out of the Marketing department if I didn’t conform, I found a dish I liked – Moo Goo Gai Pan. .. and it’s something that to this day I still order often when going out for Chinese. Getting back to Steph, it’s interesting to watch her and Jessica grow up and see how things are different than how I grew up.

Today’s was Riley’s Baptism in Brookfield, WI. My brother came down and picked me up this morning then we went with his family and our parents to the church. Riley is so cute! And so tiny! When I saw her for the first time I asked Nancy if she had put hair product in her hair since it wasn’t all sticking up like the photos I’d seen before.

I was kind of stressed out about what the sponsors would have to do during the baptism ceremony, especially since there were about 500 people there, but it turned out not to be too bad. Also, Nancy and Josh belong to a sort of progressive Lutheran church so the service went by quickly.. not too much old fashioned preaching, a lot of singing with a band. They even had a big screen where they Power Pointed out the entire service, along with song lyrics. So they didn’t need any heavy hymnals or books.

After the church service my brother and dad fretted about not being able to watch the Packer Game (they actually won!) while the rest of us had lunch and watched Nancy, Josh & Riley open their gifts. It was good to see all of Nancy & Josh’s families again. I feel like some of them are my extended family.

Later on Amanda had to go to work, but the rest of my family rode down to Chicago. We had dinner at Penny’s Noodles and my 8-year-old niece impressed us all by eating her entire meal with her chopsticks. I don’t think I learned to eat with chopsticks until I moved to California in my early/mid-20s.
