Sushi and Pool

Sushi

Pool

I had a coupon for $25 off at Blue Fin Sushi so a few weeks ago Dallas, Jess, Paul and I went. Dallas and I used to frequent this place a lot when I lived nearby back in 2004 to about 2006. Good to be back. Still a great place.

Afterwards we went to The Flat Iron, a cool bar that I have somehow never been to. The four of us played pool and I think everyone will believe me now when I say that I’m no good. Paul and Dallas were relieved when Todd and JP showed up and I could finally stop playing. Jess and I took a seat, although she is a pretty good pool player.

What $38 Mac & Cheese Looks Like

$38 Mac & Cheese

A couple weeks ago I met up with a few of my old FeedBurner coworkers for lunch at Public House. Steve was the last of our FeedBurner founders to still be working at Google and it was his last day.

On the Public House menu (PDF) they have mac & cheese with many options. Here are all of the things you can add to your mac & cheese:

  • house smoked bacon – $1
  • pulled bbq chicken – $2
  • burnt end brisket – $2
  • chicken chili – $4
  • lobster – $9
  • caramelized onion – $1
  • wild mushroom – $2
  • roasted jalapeno – $1
  • shaved french black truffle – Market Price
  • all the above – $30

Paul was very intrigued by this. We were talking to the waitress and she said no one has ever ordered “all of the above” that she’s ever seen. Paul went for it! The base price for the mac & cheese is $8 plus “all of the above” makes this $38 mac & cheese! When it came out our server said he never saw anyone order “all of the above” before either. We started to wonder if anyone had ever ordered it. The restaurant had only been open for a few months. Was it possible?

As for the taste, everyone who wanted to had a bite. I thought it was good. I think Paul thought it was really good, but not worth almost $40. Next time I think he’ll just pick a few fillings to add and cut the price in half.

Professional Wedding Photos

March 30th, 2011 · 1 Comment

We were lucky enough to have Steve Koo, an award-winning Chicago photographer (and friend), come out with us to Kauai and photograph our wedding. Steve did such a good job on our engagement photographs in Logan Square. I was excited to see what he’d come up with for the wedding.

We could not be more happy with how Steve captured the spirit of the day and all the little moments and emotions. We love Steve’s style, how saturated the photos are. It went really nicely in the tropical setting. I could not pick just a few favorite photos from the day, so I posted a whole bunch below!

For a more behind-the-scenes account of our wedding day, check out this post.

Name three things you never thought would go together: Whale-watching, Oscars, barbecue! Ha.

If I back up just a little bit, though, when we got back from breakfast a bunch of people had gone to Shipwreck Beach. Dallas and some others left to join them, but since we’d told people to stop by the house on Sunday, I thought I should stay there. Kristin and I sat around by the pool. I took a nap on a float. After a while, it was clear that no one was stopping by until later. I blame this on hangovers! So, Kristin and I went to Shipwrecks for a while too. I had fun playing in the surf with Brian and Chad and Jill for about an hour.

Such a pretty sunset!

One last sunset shot, this one taken in the same spot a few days earlier. (Photo by Kristin)

When we came home friends began coming over to hang out. Some just stopped by on their way out of town or on the way to other plans. We had a big barbecue to try to eat up our leftover food and drinks. It was a task we were not up for! We sat out on the lanai and watched whales while eating dinner. There was a beautiful sunset that night and I found a bunch of our friends across the street watching the beautiful show. Also, the Oscars were on (on a time delay) so some people were having fun watching who won. This was our last day on Kauai, so it was nice to hang out with everyone one last time.

Wedding After Party

March 20th, 2011 · No Comments

Since the wedding ended pretty early (10 p.m.), people headed back to Ho’Onani Estates for an after party. At the wedding everyone was happy and having a great time. We were drinking but no one got so drunk that they did anything crazy or embarassing. I can’t say the same is true for the after party! There was a wrestling match, drinking games, made up games, people falling asleep, people falling down, madness! I won’t really get into the details of the party, since it would be embarassing to everyone, but a good time was had. Most people left and I went to bed finally at about 3:30 a.m.!
