Panaderia La Central

Every morning when I walk to the California Blue Line train stop I have to resist the delicious smells coming out of Panaderia La Central, a Mexican bakery. Especially on a really cold day… it smells extra yummy then.

One day I will take photos of the interior too, but when you go in all of the baked goods are on shelves that line the walls and are down the middle of the store. You grab a tray and a tongs and take whatever you want. Nothing is marked so if you’re not super familiar with Mexican pastries it can be a bit of an adventure. Every time my dad visits he loves to go to the bakery and grab 10 different things to bring back to us and try. Just about everything is $0.50 per pastry. Some pastries we’ve had from the bakery were good, some were meh. You just have to chance it. Also, we’ve learned that most baked goods are better if you go in the morning and not, say, for an after dinner treat. Oh, and things run out. One night I went in at about 7 p.m. to get a french loaf and they were all gone.

Even though the smells taunt me, I like having this bakery so close to the train and our house.

Felix has Panaderia La Central interior shots and more discussion.

Scallops with risotto :: Colombo’s Cafe & Pastries, Hyannis, Cape Cod

On Wednesday we tried to go to the beach but it was really, really windy. We were getting pelted with sand. Finally we just gave up and went home. After getting all the sand off of us, we decided to go shopping. At TJ Maxx I picked up a really discounted dress, some sandals and a floppy beach hat.

For dinner we went to Colombo’s Cafe & Pastries, which opened up in Hyannis that day. Jess’s cousin Michaela is a hostess there so we went to visit her and check out the new restaurant. The concept is kind of something for everything. There’s a bar, a lounge, inside dining, outside dining, a pastry case, gelato, lunch sandwiches, nice dinner entrees, etc. I guess time will tell if this strategy works.

We really liked that all of the pasta was whole wheat and you could get a honey whole wheat crust on the pizzas. The food there skewed towards Italian and healthy, which differentiated it from the other Cape restaurants we’ve been to. Overall, we really enjoyed the food, but as to be expected on opening night of any restaurant, there were some service kinks to work out. I’m sure they just need practice to get everything running smoothly.

Chinese Pastries & Mark

Rachelle & Mark Eating Chinese Pastries
Rachelle & Mark Eating Chinese Pastries, Chinatown, Manhattan

Shortly after I first moved to New York and was feeling broke or just needed to get out of the office, Mark used to take me to Chinatown for chinese pastries. I’d usually get the scallion hotdog bun and a sweet bun for dessert. With a soda, the cost of an entire lunch is under $3. Today is Mark and my last day working together, after having worked together both on the West and East coasts for over 3 1/2 years. He’s accepted a position at RGA and will be starting while I’m on vacation in Seattle. To commemorate our last day we walked over to Chinatown, even though I’ve always vowed not to go in there in the summer, and got chinese pastries.

This is the paragraph where I should write how thankful I am for Mark having a big hand in hiring me when I was just some programmer girl on a phone interview in Wisconsin trying desperately to get a job in San Diego. And how grateful I am to have him as a friend and mentor and to have learned so much about advertising and interaction design while working with him. I’m pretty sure that all goes without saying though… Good luck, Killer!
