The awesome, awesome Adam was kind enough to open up his Park Slope garden on Monday and grill up some pizzas for us. They tasted great. The dough was nice and soft inside and crispy outside. Perfect. Each pizza had varying toppings like basil, Portobello, pepperoni, grated mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, garlic, hot peppers. Adam took requests and even made some without cheese for lactose-intolerant Jake. The last pizza we made for desert was butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar sprinkled on grilled peaches.

I’m pretty sure Adam needs to get out of the corporate world and open up a grilled pizza restaurant.

Run Around Saturday

Jessica, Rachelle, Eleanor

Last night I went to a party in Park Slope and didn’t get home until 9:00 this morning. (Long story). I still somehow managed to meet up at Ping’s for dim sum at 11:30 a.m. Afterwards we met Sarah at Pho Bang where we got some Vietnamese iced coffee and Sarah got Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches).

Sarah reviews cars for her job and this week has a Cadillac SRX so she volunteered to drive us out to Prospect Heights in Brooklyn where I was scheduled to look at an apartment. I’m so out of touch with cars these days and for the most part Sarah always has high-end cars so I’m always impressed with the features on them. This one had a theater system in the second row and power-folding third row seating. We were watching Scratch – that’s Mix Master Mike with Jess.

Jess walked down to Park Slope to visit with some other friends while the rest of us rushed back down to Lower Manhattan. Sarah wasn’t feeling well, so she just dropped us off. Heather Champ is in town and was having a group photo taken for the 20,000 photo submission to the Mirror Project site. Unfortunately, we hit a ton of traffic in Brooklyn and got there late. We took our own photo anyway. Sucks.. I really wanted to say “hello” to Heather. Oh well.. maybe she’ll be at SXSW again next year.

Jeannette & Yvan & Eleanor caught the bus uptown and I walked to the subway. I was starting to crash and when I passed by these numbers on the corner of Water St. & John St. it really confused me. Does anyone know what they are? I thought it was a calendar, but there are too many numbers.. and the number 5 was lit up.

Considering Park Slope

Squirrel in Prospect Park

Park Slope, Brooklyn

For some time I’ve wanted to get my own apartment, and since everything is so expensive in Manhattan, I’ve been trying to learn more about neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Park Slope is probably #1 on my list right now. I used to visit there when Mark and Wendy lived there*, but a recent visit by myself to explore the neighborhood confirmed it’s #1 status.

Things I like about Park Slope

  • it’s close to Prospect Park
  • it’s quiet (in comparison to Manhattan)
  • the streets are shaded with trees and lined with brownstones, quite charming
  • the avenues are a mix of mom & pop shops, cafes, boutiques, restaurants and bars

So.. if anyone has any leads on any studio or 1 bedroom apartments in Park Slope, please pass them on. Oh, and other Brooklyn neighborhoods that I am considering are Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Carroll Gardens, but I need to do more research on each of these areas. Any other suggestions?

* Earlier this week, a journalist contacted me trying to get Mark & Wendy’s phone number. She was writing a story for the New York Post about people moving from Park Slope, Brooklyn to Montclair, NJ and wished to speak to them. She found out about their move via my website. Wendy was interviewed and the article should be in the real estate section either this weekend or next.

Update: Here’s the article.

Park Slope, Brooklyn –> Montclair, NJ

Park Slope to Montclair Move
Move from Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY to Montclair, NJ

Mark and Wendy moved from their urban brownstone in Park Slope, Brooklyn to a beautiful spacious house they bought in suburban Montclair, New Jersey today. At the last minute U-Haul screwed them (surprise, surprise: U-Haul Boycott Site) and they had to hire movers. It actually was less expensive than it seems like it would be, given they only gave the movers 4 hour notice to get there, and lucky us, we then barely had to lift a finger! Montclair reminds me of home in a way. All the houses are gorgeous, old and enormous and colonial and victorian style. There was a house I saw that looks almost exactly like my old (queen-anne style?) house on State St. in Appleton, WI. I think Montclair is a great place to settle down, raise a family and still be within reach of New York. Congratulations and good luck, Mark & Wendy! I had fun hanging out and (not) helping you move today! When the stress of The City gets me you know where I’ll be heading. Oh, and I can’t wait for the first barbecue this spring!
