Here’s a funny movie clip of Tien and Jeannette at dim sum:

With the temperature outside at 8 degrees, we opted for Vietnamese coffee instead of ice cream!

Finally we got to the parade route where we met up with Jen and Jake. Everyone there was setting off confetti bombs.

On a sidestreet, Tien points out a Chinese character that says “Mao”.

As we start to make our way to the subway to go home, no one seems to care if we walk right beside the parade. This is where we get the best photographs.

Going home on the F Train.

After dim sum at Jing Fong, Eleanor, Jeannette, Yvan, Tien, Shannan, Jessica and I met up with Jen and Jake on the parade route to watch the Chinese New Year festivities. What a great way to celebrate my chinese-ness, or lack there of! My goal of the day was to see some dragon dancers, which I’d never seen before. Luckily, there were several of them. Unluckily, the temperature outside was about eight degrees. After an hour standing outside I could no longer feel my extremities and my camera was whacked out so we left.

New York’s Village Halloween Parade

November 2nd, 2003 · 9 Comments

Jess & I bought some crash test dummy masks & set to work on making the costume. We bought painter’s coveralls and tried to dye them tan.

The dye didn’t stay on anything except for my hands and the zippers of the suits.

A couple days before the parade Jess & my mom took the coveralls in so they would fit us better. When we bought them they were only available in size XXL.

My dad & I worked on making the crash test dummies’ decals out of yellow and black tape.

Mom & Jess having a fitting.

Finally the costumes are done!

On the walk home to get ready for the parade I saw all these police officers getting instructions on what do to for the Halloween Parade.

Mom, Dad, Jeannette, Jessica & Yvan came over to my place to get ready for the Halloween Parade.

Jeannette went as a tomato.

Yvan went as Princess Leia.

New York’s Village Halloween

October 31st, 2002 · Comments Off

The rest of these photos are from the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. Derek & friends as cast members of the The Match Game, Gene Rayburn, Charles Nelson Reilly, & uh.. I don’t know.

There were lots of huge scary monster puppets.

George W. Bush

And lots of crazy costumes.

After almost being squished to death on the street, we went up to a friend’s apartment to watch the parade from above. The apartment was above the Waverly Restaurant on 6th Avenue.

The float float sponsored by the Costume Network is pumping out music and there are about 100 people with inline skates on who are dancing down the street.

A band called Dirty Lenin plays on this float.

Just trying to go home and escape the madness now! The Slaughtered Lamb Pub.

Drag Queen on Christopher Street.

Someone had this cute little bunny out. Not sure why. On Halloween in The Village you don’t really ask “why?”.

Like why this guy has this huge snake on McDougal.

Empire State Building.

Chrysler Building.

New York’s Village Halloween Parade. It was a crazy freak-fest. The two biggest freaks? Jill & Jess.

Day Before St. Patrick’s Day

March 16th, 2002 · Comments Off

Midtown is going OFF! I’ve never seen so many real and pretend Irish people. While running errands, I got trapped in a mob of people numbering in the thousands.. the parade route. grrr… So, I was forced to watch a good portion of the parade. People are drunk. And green. The streets are already littered with beer cans and trash. I guess everyone’s Irish on the day before St. Patrick’s Day.

Happy Thanksgiving! I saw the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It went by on Broadway, 2 blocks from my house. Some parade things I’ve learned:

  • The night before the parade there is the "Big Balloon Blow-Up". You can go and see the giant balloons being inflated with helium. They put nets over them that are weighted down with sandbags. The balloons are enormous up close!
  • If you don’t want to learn to love hot coffee you should buy a hat, scarf and gloves before you go to see the parade. You’re going to be standing in 40-degree weather for 4 – 5 hours.
  • The parade starts at 77th Street and goes south down Central Park West and Broadway to 34th Street, where the Macy’s store is. That’s a long walk.
  • The Ronald McDonald balloon had a hole in it. In the arm. Not to worry, it seemed as though the balloons had several chambers so that if it was torn the entire balloon wouldn’t deflate.
  • I was watching the parade on Broadway between 49th and 50th. Sometimes the people directing and holding the ropes for the balloons would run through the intersection. A guy behind me said that it was because of crosswinds. I don’t know if that’s true or not.
  • The most cheers:
    Mayor Giuliani
    FDNY/NYPD
    – The pooper scoopers who followed the horses
  • My favorite celebrity in the parade: USHER!

I talked to Mom, Dad, Dick, Steph, Mark, AJ and Jeremy and got email from Nick (you all made me happy!) and then later on I ordered in Thanksgiving dinner and watched the Green Mile.
