Second City Walking Tours

July 16th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Hey, Margaret’s Second City walking tours start this weekend! I’m so psyched for her and can’t wait to go on one myself. I’ve done a downtown architecture boat tour twice, so I’m excited that this tour is in another part of town.

If you live in Chicago or are visiting, check out the Second City walking tours. Margaret an experienced guide, is so knowledgeable about Chicago and architecture, and is funny, to boot. I know these tours are going to be awesome!

You can get tickets on the Second City site. I also found this article about the new tours and thought I’d post it:

Update Jul 30, 2009:The Chicago Tribune attended Margaret’s first tour and published this video and article.

Erin’s Wedding Not-a-Shower-Just-Girls-Getting-Together-For-Drinks-and-Food

October 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Erin & Rachelle, Old Town, Chicago

Erin and Scott are getting married next weekend. This is each of their second marriages and instead of going through all of the traditional wedding hoopla, like they did for their first weddings, they have decided to elope and get married on a tiny farm in Woodstock, VT. I think it’s romantic that they’re choosing to concentrate on the marriage and that for the wedding they will only be focused on each other and their vows. No need to worry about whether the wedding cake is pretty enough or if Uncle Joe had too much to drink. What really matters? The two of them. Who will be there? The two of them. Of course, because Erin and Scott spend just about waking moment online in some fashion, they have created a blog and will be keeping everyone up to date while they’re away. The unique nature of this wedding hasn’t gone unnoticed. This week both Time Out Chicago and Glamour Magazine wrote about it.

Erin and Scott met when they were both writing for Chicagoist and Margaret and I were the co-editors. When we first hired Erin, she and I had only written emails to each other and IMed. We finally met one night for dinner at Lula. Afterwards Erin offered to give me a ride home. She said to me “I think I have crush on Scott Smith.” I laughed and was like “Yeh!! Margaret and I do too! He’s awesome.” And then as time went by … “OH! You mean .. oh. … gotcha!” Scott tells the touching story of how it all happened here. I read it remembering being present at many of those events in the timeline. When they first came to Chicagoist. When they first met at Wishbone. A drunk happy hour at My Bar (on Chicagoist, on rachelleb.com).

Today some of Erin’s close girlfriends threw her a wedding shower party for all of the women in Erin’s life to get together for a few hours for lunch and drinks. (Olivia took this photo of Erin and I at the party.) The couple has requested no gifts for the wedding, but I couldn’t help but get them something small and sentimental. I hope they like it.

It has been a joy to see their relationship evolve. It’s had it’s ups and down’s like everyone’s but I think they truly were meant to be together. I know that they will have a beautiful life together. I wish them the best… this weekend and in life!

The Children’s Fountain

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

The Children’s Fountain, Old Town, Chicago

The Children’s Fountain is located at the northeast corner of Clark and North, outside of the Chicago History Museum which I visited yesterday. I read online that this fountain used to be located at Wabash and Wacker but that it was moved when they redid Wacker. The fountain was in storage for a few years, then it was restored and now resides outside the Chicago History Museum. Photos here, here, and here show the old location (and color, it was so much lighter).

Chicago History Museum

Chicago History Museum, Old Town, Chicago

I’ve never been to the Chicago History Museum but I’ve passed by it on Clark and always thought, “I should check that out.” Online I found out that on Mondays admission is free, so I made my first visit yesterday.

I thought the Chicago History Museum was well put together. It’s not gigantic, which is kind of nice. You can see everything there in just and hour or two. If you plan ahead you can download a free audio tour mp3s of the permanent exhibit. I downloaded them, but forgot to put them on my iPod.

The special exhibit right now is Catholic Chicago, which I wasn’t really interested in. The permanent exhibits are all about the history of Chicago and I enjoyed those a lot. I liked the artifacts from the Columbian Exposition and Riverview Park. There was a cool area that was called “City in Crisis” that told about different things like the Great Chicago Fire, the Chicago race riot, Haymarket affair, the Chicago Outlet, that kind of thing.

This old CTA train reminded me of when Tien and I visited the New York Transit Museum.

One exhibit of the Chicago History Museum displayed artifacts from major businesses that are based in Chicago. I kind of chuckled because I own the pitcher that is on the left in the display. You can order your own here.

Kind of morbid, but I thought I’d seen Lincoln’s deathbed on a visit to Washington DC. I saw the Peterson house where Lincoln died and there was a room with a bed. When I got home I looked it up online and the Chicago History Museum has the actual bed. The one in the Peterson house is a replica.

There was a Gas for Less gas station on Lincoln. Before it was torn down I photographed it. At first I thought this was the same sign, but it’s not. Still cool because this sort of gas station sign just does not exist any more.

In the museum gift shop I bought a book on Riverview park. I walked around outside a bit. The Chicago History Museum is right on the edge of Lincoln Park, so the grounds are gorgeous. I wanted to walk around more but it was about 1:30 and I was hungry for lunch. I took the bus down Clark to Frontera Grill but they’re closed on Mondays. boo. I went to Mambo Grill instead. Pretty good, but not Bayless.

On Saturday night for Kristin’s birthday we took her out for sushi at Kamehachi and then went to Southport Lanes to play pool. The sushi was really good but the pinot grigio we had with it plowed me over like a freight train. The rest of the night was a blur, which explains the last photo.
