Mekong River on 6th

Mekong River on 6th
Mekong River, Austin, TX

After the Google party we decided to get some dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant nearby, Mekong River. (Check out this funny note that Matt photographed in their entryway.) Mekong River turned out to be the NSFW menu jackpot – Skirts on Fire, Tongue Toaster, Spicy Landlord, Spicy Boss, Double Sensation, Secretary Holiday, Saigon Temptation, Saigon Mistress, Rated-R Shrimp, Ambassador’s Honey. Honestly. These were all names of entrees on Mekong River’s menu. Not even making this up!

I had a chicken dish that I don’t see on the online menu but that I believe was called Aftermoon Chicken. It was basically a rice and chicken dish with a sweet honey sauce. We had Tiger and Singha beers. At the end of dinner I also had a Vietnamese iced coffee, which is something I used to get in New York’s Chinatown all the time and haven’t had since then. It was a nice treat.

Saturday Morning and Lunch in Austin

Saturday morning I caught two panels: Design is in the Details, presented by Chicago’s own Naz Hamid, and The Contextual Web by Nick Finck. My first impressions of SXSW panels now compared to 4-5 years ago: What was once 3-4 people sitting at a folding table with a projector that hopefully worked and talking into a mic to people jammed in a room is now a big stage with concert-like lighting, sound systems and projection screens. At least in the big rooms. Some of the smaller rooms were more old school. Also, all of the panels available were once on the 4th floor of the convention center all in the same hallway and now they’re all over the entire convention center and sometimes at the Hilton across the street even. It’s WAY bigger than it used to be.

After the panels I met up with John, Matt and Justin for lunch. Last year when Justin was at SXSW he met a guy who lived in Austin. This guy’s wife was Latina and her mother owned a restaurant in town which served some really great TexMex food. The restaurant is called Las Manitas, and this is where we had lunch. As a testament to how great the food is, there was a huge line of people waiting to get in. It was nice and sunny in Austin and we had an hour and a half lunch break, so we decided to wait. Plus we had Justin’s glowing recommendation from the year before.

After maybe a half hour we were seated at a table near the door. The decor inside Las Manitas is simple, with some local art on the walls. There’s a counter one one side and some booths on the other and some tables in between. The food is pretty simple, although they do have many items on the menu. Prices range from $5 – $8 for lunch entrees. How did it taste? I thought it was great. Matt and I each had a combo plate, Justin had enchiladas, and John had the chalupas. We were all happy with the food and were talking about going back for breakfast one day, but sadly it didn’t happen.

Also, I just was looking to see if Las Manitas has a site online (they don’t) and saw this site dedicated to saving the restaurant. The site says “Las Manitas and Escuelita del Alma are two of Austin’s most well known cultural institutions. They exist to serve the needs of their customers and clients, while also ensuring a diverse downtown. Because of plans for the redevelopment of the block, Las Manitas and Escuelita del Alma are at risk of non-renewal of their leases.” I hope this isn’t an issue for Las Manitas any more, because I really liked it and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Austin who wants high quality food for a low price.

PS. I’m sure there were some NSFW menu items at Las Manitas, although I can’t remember them now. I did decide at this lunch that my new band name would be “Swayed by Pork” after talking about the dinner I had the night before at Habana.

Arriving in Austin

Ahhh, so where to begin? On Friday night we arrived in the Lone Star state. Justin and I were staying in at the Hyatt and John and Matt were staying at another hotel right by the convention center. I checked into the Hyatt*, which is actually across the river and about a 20 minute walk from the convention center, and when Justin got in we met Matt & John to pick up our SXSW registration. While walking across the bridge to the downtown area and seeing the graffiti, we realized that our hotel was actually in East Austin. Jake and his fiance Natalie were also in town so they met up with us too.

After getting our SXSW badges, we went for drinks. We weren’t sure where to go and just wandered into a bar called The Library where they were having a “$2 – You Call It” special. Not to shabby.

After a couple drinks we headed over to Habana for some Cuban dinner. I had the Lechon Asado (Roast Pork) that was overnight and slow roasted. One of the main reasons for John and I ordering this dish was because on the menu it had 5 exclamation points after saying it was incredible and a best seller. I’m glad I did order it, though. Also, we started a trend for the trip where we realized that some of the menu items were NSFW. Like.. banana cups? and gigante breast? I don’t know, but it was a trend through the week.

After dinner we wandered down 6th Street to Friends bar where there was a live band playing. We had a couple more beers and then called it a night.

I hadn’t been to Austin for about 4 years – the last time I was at SXSW – and some things were the same but there were some things that I noticed had changed. There’s a lot of construction and areas that were empty back then were now filled with hotels and stores and residences. Austin is definitely growing. In fact, I just looked on Wikipedia and it says Austin is the “3rd fastest growing large city in the nation.”

* I would like to mention that the Hyatt was a lovely hotel with magical glass elevators where you could see all the way down to the lobby from the 14th floor. When I checked in they gave me a complimentary glass of champagne and were generous with the supplies when Justin and realized we’d forgotten toothbrushes and toothpaste and shaving cream (not me) and deodorant (again, not me). They could have a better coffee shop, though.
