On our 5th day of vacation we went to the North Shore. We stopped in Hale’iwa for lunch at L&L Drive Inn, one of Dallas’s favorite places to go for Hawaiian plate lunches.

Dallas had the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue with beef, chicken, & short ribs. I had the L & L Seafood Mix with fried shrimp & Mahi Mahi barbecue chicken.

As far as I can tell, Matsumoto Shave Ice is a North Shore institution. It’s an old family business that’s been open since 1951, anyone and everyone in the general vicinity of Haleiwa, all sorts of famous Japanese and American superstars have been there and their photos are on the wall, etc. Dallas told me they have the best shave ice in Hawaii, and I won’t lie, it was really good, but I think I’ll always have a soft spot for Jo Jo’s in Kaua’i, where I had my first shave ice. Plus, they use Lappert’s mac nut ice cream, which is awesome.

After Ehukai Beach, we went to Waimea Bay Beach Park. We tried to go there before Ehukai but there was no parking available. Some film crews were taking up a bunch of parking spots, making it hard for everyone else. There still were no spots, so we parked up the road and then just walked down. Dallas body surfed a lot at Waimea Bay and I laid on the beach and read a book and just relaxed. Dallas said the surf wasn’t that big, and I didn’t think it was that bad until I realized that Waimea Bay is where they hold the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational, that when “surf’s up” waves can often reach more than 30 feet tall, and that some say that Waimea Bay has the largest, most dangerous, spectacular surf in the world.

One other cool tidbit about Waimea Bay – it’s one of the filming locations used in Lost.

I’d never been to the North Shore of Oahu, so Dallas took me up there one day. We drove around and then stopped at Ehukai Beach, then Waimea Bay Beach Park, then we stopped and shopped a little in Haleiwa and then stopped for shave ice at Matsumoto’s.

These photos are from Ehukai, our first stop. Ehukai is the home of the Banzai Pipeline, which makes it one of the most spectacular and dangerous beaches in the world. In the winter, waves can reach 25 – 30 feet high here. In the summer it’s calmer and good for swimming and snorkeling. The Pipeline is actually about 100 yards to the left of Ehukai Beach. The steepness of the winter waves cause the crest to fall forward and make a tube. And then you get all those classic shots of the surfers inside the tubes of water. Each year there are surfing competitions here.

On Tuesday, Dallas was golfing with his uncle. Kristin, who is unable to do much of any physical activity because of her back, ran some errands and chilled around the pool. Rob, Sarah, Cousin and I decided to drive up the east side of Kaua’i to the North Shore. On the way up we stopped at the Kilauea Lighthouse in Kilauea and Queen’s Bath near Princeville. In the Ching Young Village in Hanalei we had lunch at Polynesian Cafe and did some shopping. We then continued on to Maniniholo Dry Cave near Ha’ena Beach before coming to the end of the road near Ke’e Beach. After we went as far as we could go by road we hiked out two more miles up the Na Pali coast on the Kalalau Trail.
