I was just wandering in the French Quarter and came across this historic house that was giving tours. It was cheap and I had time, plus, I’m not sure why but I really like seeing how people lived in past times (Pabst Mansion, Mount Vernon).

This was the Hermann-Grima house, named for the 2 families that lived there, the Hermanns first then the Grimas. From their website

Built in 1831, HERMANN-GRIMA HOUSE is one of the most significant residences in New Orleans. This handsome Federal mansion with its courtyard garden boasts the only horse stable and functional 1830s outdoor kitchen in the French Quarter.

Painstakingly restored to its original splendor through archaeological studies and careful review of the building contract and inventories, the museum complex accurately depicts the gracious lifestyle of a prosperous Creole family in the years from 1830 to 1860.

Most of the people on the tour were fresh off a cruise boat that had just been in the Caribbean, but originated in London. I think. They were all British, for sure. As with most historic house tours, we couldn’t take photos inside the main house. We were allowed to once we were out in the courtyard, a feature not uncommon to houses in New Orleans. We were also able to take a few photos in the structure separate from the main house. This was the slave quarter and also where the kitchen was located. Interesting side note: Many of the slave quarters in New Orleans that still exist are rented apartments and the real estate listings still call them “slave quarters.”

An old photo of the Milwaukee Art Museum. It was taken on July 4 when we went to Summerfest. Some day I want to go inside.

On Saturday I opened up tabs in Firefox of all the places Steph might be interested in visiting. Then I had her look at all the websites and choose. We decided to go to the Sears Tower then to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: When we got to the Sears Tower we were told that visibility was ZERO PERCENT. So we decided to just go to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: There was an hour-long line just to get into the building. Oh well. We didn’t go all that way not to do something and Steph really wanted to go to the aquarium, to see the things we didn’t see last time*, so we stood. In line. Forever.

We were excited to see the komodo dragon, and while the whole lizard exhibit was cool, the dragon was a let down. Wow. A big dragon. Next! I mean, it’s cool, but we were pretty psyched and then it was just.. like.. there. We did really like the Wild Reef exhibit, though. There were a few other things we wanted to see that we’d already seen before, but for the most part, we skipped the rest of the aquarium. I was getting so tired! Maybe I’m just old or maybe I’m just not used to a 10-year-old kid’s pace and being responsible for someone else, but I was exhausted! Plus, why does she have to keep asking me questions like “What if we get to our stop and you step out but I get caught on the train and can’t get off?” and “What would happen if like a bomb was on the train tracks and the train couldn’t stop in time?” Jeez! Way to stress me out!

We had a good day, though. Later on we went to the movie, filled up on popcorn and then went to dinner at Robey Pizza, a new favorite in our new neighborhood.

* The photos of Steph here are cute, but I liked my animal photos better last time.

On Thursday night a bunch of folks from Six Apart were in Chicago to have a party and demo their latest product, Vox. I did a post previously about Vox, so it may sound familiar, even though the product is not available to the public until about October. It was awesome to meet everyone from Six Apart and I tried not to be too much of a fangirl to Mena, but a photo of us together was required! I also found it cool to bring together my Chicagoist world with my FeedBurner world with the blogging in Chicago world and throw in Six Apart. Also, Krissy from Six Apart, who I’d been emailling with quite a bit to set up a Chicagoist reader contest, also is the Music Editor at SFist.

After eating at Bongo Room, my dad and I went to the Museum of Science and Industry. I’d been there one time before but hadn’t seen all of the exhibits. I think the exhibits we saw this week were all different form the ones I saw last time and I still haven’t seen the entire museum. It’s big!
