These were some of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s First Birthday Happy Hour. It was amazing to get the Chicagoist team together with all of our readers and fans and to think that just over a year ago I’d just moved here and didn’t know anything about anything and now we’re running a successful website that’s challenging the way the local traditional media does things.

Last night was Amy and Scott‘s going away party at Howl at the Moon, the dueling piano bar. They’re not really going anywhere but their holiday break is over and they’re resuming their grad school studies so pretty much we won’t see them for a few months. Free and 50 cent drinks, free appetizers, sing along songs.

Me: “Yeh! Oh. No. Wait. Only if you have a paper clip.. or a toothpick?”

And then Mr. X, a friend of Mr. Smith’s, walks up. This guy, whose identity is protected, is demonstrating to us the benefits of using a binder clip as a money clip instead of using an actual money clip. He thinks the ladies will think he’s resourceful even though we tell him the ladies will just think he’s cheap. I asked to borrow the binder clip and then I took it apart and used it on my camera. Mr. X saves the night.
