Goodbye Cory & Chris

October 10th, 2011 · No Comments

The truck was just a little bit gigantic!

Doug played a lot of box Tetris inside the truck. Danny did a lot of heavy lifting.

Tommy and Kenji had a ball running up and down the ramp. Look at mean Uncle Danny, though. He made them stop.

Meanwhile their brother Eddy chilled out with their grandma in the middle of the chaos.

Full truck. Time to make some tough decisions about what goes, what stays! Doug, Kevin, Chris, Steve

Eddy was born in January, Tyler in August. So much bigger than even a month ago!

Cory & Me. Some family members wouldn’t talk to me with that shirt on, but the game was that night!

On Sunday Cory and Chris had a Load The Truck/Moving party. Chris got a job in Vail, CO and actually left more than a month ago to work there. In the meantime, Cory packed up all their things. Chris came back this weekend to get her and all their stuff. They rented a truck and are driving out to Vail with their dog, Zoe.

I arrived to the party about an hour late and thought I would have missed a big chunk of the loading, but the truck wasn’t even there yet! And there were only about 8 people and 3 of them were pregnant (Caroline, Toni, Chris’s sister)! There was so much stuff, I thought we would be there all night. Slowly people showed up, all hoping they’d missed the bulk, but they did not! Aunty Laura said that is how the family works, but reminded me that Cory is a part of the family too and she knows that about everyone! haha. It turned out that everyone did their fair share of heavy lifting… well, except the pregnant girls, babies, and older aunties.

Dallas was on a flight to South Carolina for work, so I was there on my own and was willing to do whatever I needed to. Cory helped us when we moved to Roscoe Village and she and Chris have helped us with other things on numerous occasions, so we owed them that. Luckily it went pretty fast once we got going. I don’t think everything made it into the truck, though. I was sort of hoping the bike roof rack wouldn’t make it or this cool trunk they have wouldn’t and I’d be forced to take it for…. safe keeping.. but alas, those things fit in. They’ll be towing a car on the back of the truck, so hopefully they can fit some things in there too.

After the moving was done, we all had dinner. Aunty Laura made a whole spread of her famous flank steak, chili, salad, mac n cheese, cone sushi, char sui, and all sorts of things. Naoko made an Italian cream cake and like always, it was delicious!

Good luck, Chris and Cory! You guys will be missed!

Getting Settled

November 1st, 2008 · 10 Comments

I’m up kind of early and not motivated to start organizing and unpacking yet. Yesterday after we moved in we had a lot of house calls.

The Latino dry waller who worked on this building came by looking for our developer, David. He had 6 containers of homemade salsa that his wife made and I guess periodically he gives them to David because he knows how much he likes it. David wasn’t around, so he put the salsa in the fridge of the one remaining condo unit in our building, but not before giving me one of them, which was really nice. The dry waller had his adorable daughter with him. She was maybe 6 years old, but she wouldn’t tell me her name. Too shy. Me: “cómo te llamas?” Her: Blank stare.

Later on we went and ate at Taqueria Moran, a nearby inexpensive Mexican restaurant. I was hoping/dreading that this place would be good because we’ll be walking past it a few times every day. If it’s good, score! But then I’ll want to go all the time. I love Mexican food. Verdict? It was good. Dallas loved the carnitas. After lunch we went across the street to the Mexican supermarket. I wanted to get some good chips for the salsa we were given. Also just wanted to check it out. Loads of fresh produce. Hopefully it’s a good quality because it’s really nearby our place. Just looked, it got poor reviews on Yelp. We also stopped into Panaderia La Central, the Mexican bakery, that’s right there. I’d gotten sweets there one time with Jen and Jess when we first viewed the condo, but Dallas had never been. We didn’t get anything, but had fun looking.

Back to unpacking. The Comcast guy came over next to get our internet service up and running. Then the plumber came over to work on finishing up the steam shower (!!) and David the Developer (groan) came over to check in on things. At night, after trick-or-treating Chad helped us move a few more things that we didn’t trust with the movers. Looooong day.

Today we’re expecting to see David again. An electrician is coming over to finish up a few things, a cleaning person is coming over because there’s a lot of dust and dirt on things from construction still, and I think the painter might be coming to take care of some sealing on the stairs. Oh, and the Direct TV is getting transferred over today. My parents are arriving in a few hours to help us out over the weekend. On Monday we have “the trimmer” coming to finish up some things in the bedroom that we had the developer change in the last week before we moved in. Our place is 99% complete but there are still some things on a list that need to be completed with the developer. Hopefully he’s cool and follows through on all he has promised to finish working on.

Now that you read all that, I guess I can show you a few photos of the place! These were taken when I came over before the movers, so it was completely empty. The condo is two floors, like our last apartment was. On the top is the kitchen, dining room, powder room, and living room. The bottom floor is a den/rec room/second living room, spare bedroom that will most likely be an office, bathroom, laundry, master bedroom and master bathroom. We have a private patio space as well as a shared deck on top of the garage. Oh, and a parking space in the garage. Right now our bikes are parked there!

Moving to Logan Square

Movers backing into our Roscoe Village alley, Roscoe Village, Chicago

We hired The Professionals to do our move today and they arrived right on time at 8:00 a.m. It’s been a long day and will probably be a lot longer. I’m just taking a break right now. This was the first time I’ve hired movers and it was SO worth it. It cost a lot, but in the scheme of things, given how much money we laid out yesterday, it was a drop in the bucket. Our movers were fantastic and it was so much better than doing it ourselves or begging friends to help.

When the movers were almost done I jumped in a cab to go to our new place so I could open the doors and get ready for them. I noticed in the cab that the fuel surcharge has dropped to $0.50. Back in July I noted it was $1.00.

Fuel Surcharge, Chicago

More on the condo soon. I know everyone’s requesting photos, but I don’t know if I’ll get to them today yet.

All Moved In

Roscoe Village, Chicago

Even if I can’t find anything, all the stuff is in the new place. Last night I turned my old keys in and got my deposit, so I officially live in Roscoe Village now. The reality of my new commute* set in this morning when I arrived late for a meeting at work – a meeting I didn’t know about because the email was sent out this weekend and I don’t have an internet connection at home yet. Hopefully that problem will be resolved tomorrow, but still, don’t expect much from me here for a bit.

* New commute is 30 minutes walking and 30 minutes on the train. The walk is split 15 minutes between the new apartment and the train and 15 minutes between work and the train.

Cubs vs. Pirates

Dee & Dallas, Wrigley Field, Wrigleyville, Chicago

Went to a Cubs game yesterday with Dallas’ Uncle Dee and his coworkers then spent the rest of the day packing and moving things up to the new place. Just trying to get ready for the big move next weekend. The Cubs game was fun, but I think all of the points were scored when I was either in the restroom or in search of beer and/or hotdogs.
