Steve Ettlinger @ Google

March 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

A few weeks ago Steve Ettlinger, the author of “Twinkie, Deconstructed,” spoke at Google in Mountain View as part of the Authors @ Google series. I watched via video conference and found what he had to say very interesting.

The book idea came one day when Steve’s young daughter was reading the ingredient list on an ice cream bar and asked him, “Daddy, what’s polysorbate 60?”. He had no idea, but soon would find out. Steve became very interested in the ingredients in processed foods – where they come from how they’re made, how they’re used, and why they’re used. He took the Twinkie as a perfect example, made the book’s table of contents the Twinkie ingredient list, and then went out to figure out where each thing came from. He started at the source and then followed each ingredient to see how it was processed and then finally how it came to be added to the Twinkie.

It’s really interesting to see that Twinkie ingredients come from phospate mines in Idaho, corn fields in Iowa, gypsum mines in Oklahoma, vanilla harvests in Madagascar, and the list goes on. I mean, mines? We’re eating rocks, not food! I have a copy of the book now and it soon will be inserted into my reading schedule.

Barack Obama @ Google

November 15th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Yesterday Barack Obama spoke at Google in Mountain View (boo!), but we were able to video conference it in live and a bunch of people stayed late in the office to watch. Senator Obama had been to Google a few years ago and wrote about some of his experiences in his last book, The Audacity of Hope. You can see Obama’s speech here, complete with Google interview questions! Also, here’s a CNN article on it.

Finally Seeing Friends in San Francisco

August 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments

San Francisco City Hall
San Francisco City Hall, San Francisco

I’ve been in San Francisco and Mountain View since yesterday for work. Last night, I was lucky enough to meet up with Susan and Allison, who I haven’t seen since they moved to San Francisco. Other times I’ve been out here for work I’ve either been to busy with work stuff, or had not been staying near San Francisco, or it just didn’t work out. Trent was at a conference in San Jose and also came up to San Francisco and went out with us.

After some confusion with Susan and I going to a restaurant only to find out that Trent and Allison were in a different neighborhood and already had eaten, we ended up having drinks and dinner at Enrico’s in North Beach. The food was really good – we had goat cheese-stuffed mushrooms, oysters, and a fig and Gorgonzola pizza – but the service was crap. We repeatedly had to ask for a waiter, then for the stuff we ordered and then, in the end, for our check. Still it was fun to hang out outside and to see Allison and Susan again. Just like old times in Hawaii!

A few more photos from the quick trip are here.

Arianna Huffington Event

Arianna Huffington

The bad news today was that our 6pm flight that was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 12:01 am is now delayed and I just got an email update that said our flight would be arriving at about 3-something am. The good news was that I was able to see Arianna Huffington (Huffington Post) speak when I would have missed it to get to the airport. The speakers here at the Mountain View office are amazing. Ben Cohen yesterday and Michael Bloomberg the day before.. but this was the first one I was able to attend. Then again, Vint Cerf was a speaker when I was in the New York office…. but he’s a Google employee now, so that may not even count.
