Tommy’s 2nd Birthday

July 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

The day after Killian and Liz’s wedding was Tommy’s 2nd birthday party. I honestly didn’t think we were going to make it. I woke up and told Dallas to call Danny to come and get Tommy’s gift on the way to the party because we weren’t going. But Dallas wanted to go so I got ready and then slept til Danny came to pick us up. Danny took some back way to Mount Prospect with a lot of speed bumps and I contemplated opening the door or something because I thought I was going to be sick. By the time we got there I was feeling ok.

It’s hard to wrangle so many kids. They kept walking out of the photo! I know a few kids are missing here and there were also a few babies not pictured.

Miku :: Mount Prospect, IL

Tommy’s birthday is a lot of fun. There are always a lot of little kids. Seems like I always end up playing with Miku. Her family speaks Japanese in their home and I don’t think she speaks much English. .. but a language barrier doesn’t mask the fact that she loves to ham it up, especially in front of the camera. That is her with what was left of the pinata on her head. The little kids didn’t really destroy the pinata… it was the older boys, including Dallas, who were throwing footballs at it that really killed it.

Showing Tommy how to eat the frosting.

I know everyone always says this, and Doug and Naoko are probably sick of hearing it, but I just can’t get over it every time I see Tommy… how he looks EXACTLY like Doug.

These photos are way late because I didn’t get a chance to post them between Killian & Liz’s wedding and the wedding we attended the following weekend in Connecticut.

The first year I went to Christmas dinner at Dallas’ Aunt Gail’s house Chris and Mitch were the youngest kids I knew. Kyle and Winnie were visiting from California and they had 2 young boys, but I didn’t know them well and was overwhelmed by all the new people that I don’t remember them that much.

Last year Tommy and Hideto were born and it was their first Christmas. It was so much fun. This year Scotty & Krystyn didn’t come out from California so Hideto wasn’t at the party, but Winnie and Kyle made it out and this time with an addition: baby Kate. It’s was her first Christmas. Kate’s brothers Derek and Ben are getting so much older and running around and playing with Chris and Mitch. And Tommy… so cute! It’s his second Christmas and he’s starting to talk and have a real personality. Naoko speaks Japanese to Tommy at home and he’s already bilingual. When Naoko tells him things in Japanese he really listens and does it immediately. Pretty funny. Maybe that’s when he knows he’s really in trouble.

So, I guess the point is that it’s great to see all of Dallas’ family, but just like at my family’s Christmas, the kids are what make it great.

Today we were in the suburbs to help celebrate Tommy’s first birthday. I haven’t seen him or a lot of the family since Christmas and New Years, so it was good to visit with everyone. Lots of kids today. Probably 10 under the age of 5 and 10 more who were aged 6-13 and about 60 people all together. Some of the kids of friends of the family I hadn’t seen in so long. They’re growing up fast. And all so cute, but when there’s 20 or more it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily the house and yard were big so they could all spread out and play.

Every year we go to Dallas’ Aunt Gail’s for Christmas dinner. She always makes beef tenderloin for the entire family. This year we had 2 new babies – Doug & Naoko’s son Tommy and Scotty and Krystyn’s son Hideto. Tommy is only one month older than Hideto. They were so fun. I don’t know what we did last year without them for entertainment.

On Christmast evening we went to Dallas’ Auntie Gail’s house in Mt. Prospect for dinner and a gift exchange. She made beef tenderloin that had to be some of the best I’ve ever eaten. I even took seconds, and I rarely even eat steak.

Later on the $10 grab bag/gift exchange got pretty crazy but Dallas and I were able to team up to get the gift we wanted. It was a set of Japanese bowls that we suspected that Doug & Naoko brought. Luckily we were right. I think next year there’s going to be a rule in place because our strategy was copied by others and then the game got repetitive and, I guess, unfair.

Oh, and there was a little football game on. The Packers lost, but I’m glad it wasn’t a total blow out. I was afraid of what was going to happen to me in a house full of Bears fans. Luckily, they were pretty merciful. Except for Chris, who is like 9 years old and full of all kinds of trash talk.
