On Christmas day we always go to Dallas’s Aunty Gail’s house out in Mount Prospect, IL. Every year Aunty Gail makes beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole and her mom’s lettuce/mayo/crab/pea salad. It never varies. Dessert varies because other people always bring different desserts, but Aunty Gail always makes her signature cookies. This year Naoko made a super light and airy cheesecake (usually it’s so dense and filling!), a chocolate cake and cream puffs. Naoko’s desserts are always fabulous, but Dallas and I both commented together about how great the cream puffs were. The custard was so delicious. Heather and I each brought candy trays. Mine should look familiar, since I’ve been featuring all the candy recipes here last week.

This year there were relatively few (only 18!) people over for dinner. I think it’s the first year that we could all sit at the long table. The first year that I didn’t sit at a kiddie side table! After dinner, many other family members came over and we had the gift exchange. Every year Aunty Gail tells you a thousand times, “$10 gift bag, no junk, no junk!” Ok. Well, what can you really get for $10 that is not junk? This year she finally increased the limit to “$20 gift bag, no junk, no junk.” To be honest, I think I was already spending $15 on the gift bags anyway. And actually, the price increase helped a lot. There were many good gifts, and no junk, Aunty Gail, no junk.

This year all of the golfers were fighting over a package that they thought were a pair of golf gloves. Dallas ended up with it in the end and guess what? It was a Coach key chain. Score for me! When it was Winnie’s turn to pick a gift she let one of the kids pick and they picked a very large box, which is not ideal because she lives in California and would have to travel home. So when it was my turn to pick I took her big box. It ended up being an amaryllis bulb, which I’ve always wanted to try growing, so score again for me! There were a few boxes and tiny gift bags that people thought were going to be bags of rice. Usually Aunty Gail will put a few pieces of rice in a Ziploc and wrap it and then the gift is 20 pounds of rice. Dallas always wants this gift because it’s something he can actually use. Most of the small, light gifts this year turned out to be gift cards. Aunty Gail’s gift was actually a Shake Weight that Aunty Glenna got. I don’t know how there are no photos of her, or the many people who tried it out, but it was hilarious, as you can imagine.

As always, amazing to see how the family is growing every year. And great to visit with everyone!

Dessert varies because other people always bring different desserts, but Aunty Gail always makes her signature cookies. Now, I’m not complaining that it doesn’t vary, because it’s not like I’m eating steak and potatoes every night! And dinner always tastes super good.

After dinner all of the adults have a $10 gift exchange. There were a lot of people participating in the gift exchange this year. 25, I think, but it wasn’t very crazy at all. Not compared to some of the other years. We’re going to have to kick it up a notch next year. This year I came out with some votives and Dallas got a big bag of rice. Actually, he got something else and traded for the rice. He always wants that rice gift that Aunty Gail puts in every year.

This year it was amazing to see all the kids in the family. .. and more on the way!

Christmas Dinner at Auntie Gail’s

On Christmas day we always go to Dallas’ Auntie Gail’s house in Mt. Prospect. This was the first year we had a car to actually drive ourselves out, which doesn’t seem like a big deal, but in the past it’s always been a hassle to try to get a ride.

Auntie Gail made the same dinner she makes every year: beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole and her mom’s lettuce/mayo/crab/pea/something salad. Not a huge fan of the salad but everything else was fantastic, as always.

All of the adults have a $10 gift bag exchange after dinner. This year didn’t get too crazy, except when someone took away Aly’s gift. She had her eye on one and it turned out to be a Snuggie, which she was really psyched about. And it was awesome for us because that was one of the gifts we brought. Dallas ended up getting a metal water bottle and I got a scrapbook with two $5 bills taped on it. Not sure how that works out. Aly brought it and tried to explain it to me, but I wasn’t following. Ha.

Kenji’s Thank You Note

Before going to Jess’s 30th birthday party on Saturday night, we went to Kenji’s first birthday during the day. How much he has grown since the little peanut I held last year at Christmastime! Kenji is a bit more reserved compared to his big brother Tommy who runs around and is super open with people and outgoing. Kenji’s better one on one and if he sees mommy Naoko, then your gig is probably up!

Naoko, of course, made the most delicious meal. I remember a hot reuben dip that was delicious. Also, she made eggplant parmesan and meatballs for about 30 people. So, so yummy. You can always count on Naoko for super good food! For dessert she made cake – yellow cake with strawberries and bananas in between the layers. She also made a homemade twinkie train where each car of the train is a homemade twinkie cake. Kenji got his own cake to himself. It took him a while to figure out what to do, but soon he was digging in there eating the cake and frosting like it was nobody’s business!

For take-homes we all got these personalized thank you notes (that matched the party invitation) attached to a bag of chocolate chip shortbread cookies and some smores treats. I don’t know how Naoko finds the time to do all of this with two little kids to chase after, but it sure is cute! Martha Stewart, that one!

On Christmas day we always go to Dallas’ Auntie Gail’s house in Mt. Prospect. This year we didn’t have a ride, but we live so close to the Blue Line that we just took it out to the Cumberland stop and Auntie Laura picked us up. Very convenient, just so we don’t have a lot to carry.

Every year Auntie Gail makes beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn and her mom’s lettuce/mayo/crab/?? salad. Always delicious. Also, around Thanksgiving every year Auntie Gail starts reminding everyone to bring a $10 grab bag, “no junk.” The exchange always gets a little crazy with people going after the same gifts over and over even though they have no idea what they are. It’s all about the packaging. Dallas and I got a fancy wine opener (from Naoko) and a deviled egg plate (from Auntie Laura).

This year it was fun to see Kenji, Doug and Naoko’s baby who was just born less than a month ago. He’s so tiny. When Tommy and Hideto were born I don’t think I saw them til they were much older. I stole Kenji away for almost an hour and then finally gave him up to the next person to hold him. Also, I’d only spent time with Hideto one time before. He was visiting from the Bay Area with his parents, Dallas’ cousin Scott & Krystyn and it was nice to see him again. He’s gotten so big!
