Logan Square Neighborhood Walk: California Avenue

July 23rd, 2011 · 1 Comment

One day a few months ago, I was wanting to go for a walk, but wanting to go somewhere new. I used to do these “neighborhood walks” and post photos on this site, but haven’t done it forever. So, I decided that maybe over the course of this summer I will try to walk Logan Square. When you look up Logan Square boundaries, people have varying opinions. For this exercise, I’m going to go with these boundaries for the neighborhood: Diversey to the north, Western to the east, Armitage to the south and Pulaski to the West. However you classify it, the neighborhood is HUGE. So, I think if I do this I’ll have to break it up into a bunch of chunks. As the summer has progressed I haven’t done a great job keeping up on this project, but I’ll keep trying. Here are my photos from my walk on California Avenue from Armitage to Diversey.

Letizia’s Is Coming to Logan Square

February 20th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Letizia’s Natural Bakery, Logan Square, Chicago

I get my hair cut at Mops Beauty Shop on California at Altgeld. Across Altgeld there’s been a lot of construction on a building and when it was done, it was space for a storefront with apartments above. We’ve all been eagerly waiting to see what would go into the space. Today when I went in to get my hair cute I found out: Letizia’s Natural Bakery! I can’t find any information about this online, but as the photos show, it’s for sure Letezia’s. I’m assuming that the Wicker Park location is branching out to Logan Square. I’m excited to have this place. I’ve visited the Wicker Park location a few times when I lived closer to it and the food and coffee was always great. I think it will be a nice addition to the neighborhood. .. and I wonder if it will give the Starbucks on California and Logan Boulevard a run for its money.

3rd Largest Whole Foods in the Whole World

May 24th, 2009 · 9 Comments

Yesterday I went with Dallas to get his hair cut (finally) at Mops Beauty Shop. I’ve been going to Kate at Mops since we moved to Logan Square and I was happy to have her work on Dallas’ hair. She did a great job today. If you live near Logan Square you should check them out. They’re on California just north of Fullerton. Kate and Krista just opened the shop around the time we moved here, Kate is a friend of a friend and they’re all very talented. Happy to support their business!

After the haircut, we went to Dunlays on the Square to eat lunch/brunch. I hadn’t had any coffee yet, so I got an iced one.. but quickly switched to a bloody mary or two. It was such a nice day out (high of 78) and was so nice just to sit and relax at a table outside. Jess lives nearby so she came over and joined us.

Later on I had a little bit of grocery shopping to do, so I suggested to Jess that we check out the new Whole Foods that opened this past Wednesday. At 75,000 square feet, It is the 3rd largest Whole Foods in the world. Only the Austin flagship store and the London store are larger. This Whole Foods in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago is insane. Every department is at least 2-3 times bigger than the departments in the Whole Foods we’re used to shopping at in Lakeview. And there’s a river walk along the Chicago River. And there is a 2 story parking structure in addition to the street-level lot. And the free samples everywhere you turned. And there’s a food court with everything from sub sandwiches to tacos to Japanese fare. And they make 20+ kinds of gelato in house. And. And. And. Sensory overload! The new store is awesome, but overwhelming. .. especially after a day of just relaxing in the warm weather. I was ready for a nap!

The photo below was taken as we descended down the elevator into the store from the 2nd floor parking ramp. There was organic produce as far as the eye can see. My photo is kind of deceptive because I didn’t have a wide enough lens on my camera, but believe me, produce to the ends of the earth. Plus the guy on the escalator was acting like he’s on the FBI’s Most Wanted List or something. As soon as I took a photo his head whipped around and he gave me the nastiest looks! A couple other notes about his photo: 1. The guy in the orange shirt is looking at a map. The store is that big. A map is needed. 2. This store has everything. Even Whole Babies?
