On Sunday we went to Oak Creek for Jessica’s 7th birthday party. Crazy to think she’s 7 already. I was just thinking about when I lived in New York and got the call that she was born. And how the first time Dallas met my family was at her 2nd birthday party. (Here are links to her 3rd birthday and 4th birthday, if you’re interested.)

Sunday was HOT. Like 90+ degrees outside. But it was nice that it was finally warm. We sat around outside and visited. I hadn’t seen Amanda’s family or Brian and Sheila for a while. I’d met Ashley, Brian and Sheila’s daughter, when she was a baby, but they have since had another, Jason, who will be a year old in July. Actually, I think I saw Brian last year, but without the kids. They grow up fast!

My brother grilled hotdogs and hamburgers. Jess had a ton of gifts to open up. She didn’t really talk the whole time, but I think you could tell she was happy and excited for all the nice presents. She tried on the outfit we got her soon after she opened it, so that’s a good sign.

Amanda made a Barbie birthday cake. There were a lot of jokes made about ladies jumping out of cakes, but it was really well done and a unique idea. Amanda is now on the hook to make two cakes for our wedding. One a Barbie and one a Hawaiian guy. haha

Over the holidays my brother’s dog, Milo, was visiting with his family. I took a few photos of him but never posted them. He does look a bit like Vegas but not as much as I thought before I sat here and compared their photos.

Hosting a Super Bowl Party

February 2nd, 2009 · 4 Comments

Super Bowl 43Originally we were going to spend Super Bowl 43 at Jen & Chad’s house, but Jen and Quinn are visiting relatives in California and Chad was traveling on business and got stuck there longer than he’d anticipated. So Dallas and I volunteered to host the party at our house.

It ended up being a fabulous food party. Dallas made 4 pounds of slow cooker pulled pork and blue cheese cole slaw to eat on the sandwiches or on the side. I made cocktail wieners and guacamole. Loden made cheesy potato casserole and mini football-shaped brownies. On each one there were the frosted football details. Kristin made cornbread and chicken fingers. Jill made pumpkin cake and chocolate chocolate chip cake. Liz made cookies. And everyone brought beer and wine. So much food and drinks. So delicious.

The game? I thought it was ok. Everyone keeps saying how it was such a good game, but I don’t think any of us really got into it until the 4th quarter.. and specifically Brian and Loden were just cheering for their numbers at the end (they both won money). I don’t really even remember any of the commercials. They weren’t that great this year. Some were even old commercials that were already playing on TV. We did like the Cash4Gold commercial, though. It sparked a long discussion about Snuggies and ShamWows.

Killian and Liz brought their new dog, Sandy, over to the house. She’s only about 6 months old and they’re still training her so they couldn’t leave her at home the whole time. I thought she was going to be a crazed puppy, but she was really relaxed and listened very good. .. and no accidents! Sandy is the 4th dog (Maggie, Milo, Jackson) to visit our house and we’ve only lived there 3 months. Guess that means we have a dog-friendly condo. Jill and Brian brought their extra Wii controllers and the Mario Kart game. After the football game we all played Wii.

Abby and Phil’s wedding was Saturday night (more on that later) and I was so exhausted that I couldn’t bring myself to take any photos yesterday. I know. Crazy!

Visiting With Family

After Riley’s party we went to my parent’s house. Kelly and Jeff and Tessa came over in the afternoon to visit and for a big dinner my mom made. I hadn’t seen Tessa and Jeff since last summer. Tessa sure is cute and running around and talking like crazy. .. speaking of which… I don’t know if Jessica is finally coming out of her shy stage or if it was because Dallas wasn’t with me, but she was really excitable and talkative on this trip too. I told Jess when Dallas was done traveling I was going to give him a big hug and say it was from her and she basically ran out of the room screaming. Ha. Jess and Tessa were happy to see each other and running around and playing hard. Add in the two dogs and it was a bit of a crazy house. Kelly is 8+ months pregnant and much bigger than the last time I saw her. It’s strange to think that the next time I see them they’ll have another daughter!

It was a good visit to my parents’ house. The next morning we all had brunch then had to head back. It always goes by so fast!

Bowden Christmas

Ha ha, Dallas, only Grandma can help with presents

On Saturday my parents and my brother’s family came to our house to celebrate Christmas. Dallas and I made hot beef that we cooked for 10 hours in a slow cooker we were borrowing from Kristin. We also made hot cider and my parents brought sides and my brother brought drinks. Of course there was also tons of cookies and candies and snacks.

After lunch we watched Elf and then we opened gifts. Most of the gifts were for my nieces Stephanie and Jessica and were from my parents, Dallas and me. Stephanie is getting so grown up. She’s finding her own style and grown up personality and she’s so tall and thin. She’s becoming a real teenager, her language riddled with “like”s and exclamations of “nice!” and with my brother and sister-in-law teasing her about going to her first dance. Supposedly the night of the dance Jessica was laughing hysterically that Stephanie was going to dance with a boy. Sisters! It sounds like there was a lot of shy standing around for Steph and her friends, though. What do you expect from an 11-year-old 6th-grader dance? My brother said Steph didn’t like the dance because the music was too loud and I guess Soulja Boy isn’t up her ally, so thankfully she’s got a little more growing up to do. Tweens!

A few weeks ago I asked my brother if he though Steph would like an iPod Shuffle for Christmas. He pointed me to her Amazon wish list and this is what I found (note the comment):

Stephanie’s Amazon Wishlist

Looked like we were going to be favorites of the day! And we weren’t disappointed. Talking to Steph beforehand we asked what the best gift she could imagine for Christmas would be and she said it would be an iPod. Turning into the best actors in the world, we all guffawed like “oh boy, that’s a pretty big gift, I hope there’s something else you’d like!” So she was really surprised when she opened our gift to her. She gave us big hugs and was really happy.

Jessica is pretty much the opposite. All day long she wouldn’t talk to us, even when we asked her questions that were just “yes” or “no” answers. She wouldn’t smile or laugh. When her favorite scene in the movie Elf came on (when the “friendly” raccoon attacks Will Ferrell’s face), she had to hide her face so we wouldn’t catch her smiling. Jess has always been really shy around us, no matter how much we see her. I don’t know if it’s just us or if she’s like this around other people too. I know that at home and around my parents she’s perfectly fine. And we’ll hear her in another room with them and she’s chatting away and playing and totally fine, but then we come in and it’s all over. We are so mean and scary!

Jessica
Jessica won’t smile

About 6 hours into the day, Jess did get more lively and talkative, playing games and even letting me help her try on new clothes she got as gifts. During the football game, she was even getting shushed. She’s such a nice, smart, fun kid, I just wish she’d let it all out. By the time she is herself around us, she has to go. And she’s never really gotten into being around Dallas except that one time when we were at Culver’s. Maybe we need to always have ice cream when she’s around or something. Or maybe we need to just take her and have her stay over for a weekend? Either she’d get over it or she’d be scarred for life, who knows.

Later on Jessica snaps out of it and has fun

We had fun hosting Christmas for the first time and had fun spending time with my family. Oh, and I got a slow cooker for Christmas so I can give Kristin’s back. If you have good slow cooker recipes, drop the links to them in the comments.
