Last month Olivia and I got together for lunch during Restaurant Week at Cafe Spiaggia. Restaurant Week is is a great opportunity to try out high-end restaurants without spending a ton of money. In Chicago more than 130 restaurants participated and offered a 3-course prix-fixe menu for $22 at lunch and $32 for dinner. Now, $22 isn’t something I could afford for lunch very often, but to try a resataurant I’d never be able to afford otherwise, it was fun.

Cafe Spiaggio is the less formal, more affordable version of Spaiggia, but it’s still pretty much out of most people’s range. I liked the food that we had, but honestly, I don’t know if I’d ever pay full price there. For what we got, it seems like there are more affordable Italian places around town. Still, I was glad to try it and see what people talk about when they talk about Spiaggia. People… like… you know.. the Obamas. They went to Spiaggia a couple years ago for Valentines Day and spent $700 on an eight-course meal, including wine and dessert. So, yeh… $22 for lunch at the cafe is not bad.

It was good to see Olivia again. It had been a long, long time! We need to get on it this year.. or at least get some good lunches in before wedding season is in full swing (she’s a wedding photographer). Last year Olivia and I lunched at Topolobampo during Restaurant Week.

Jess and Jen in Chicago

Presidential Debates, Village Tap, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Jessica and her sister Jen flew in yesterday. They’re attending a wedding today and staying at our place for the weekend. On Friday they met me downtown after work and we went to Millennium Park. A bunch of it was closed off for NextFest and Chicago Gourmet, but we were still able to admire the bean and the fountains. We walked up Michigan Avenue, bought some chocolates at Vosges, and went up the Signature Lounge for a drink (like we did last time Jess was here), to rest, and to admire the view. Jess has been to Chicago a few times before, but this was Jen’s first time. We ended the night at Village Tap. We were sort of bummed because we missed the first part of the debate, but when we got to the Tap it the patrons were completely silent and the TVs were all tuned to the debate with the volume cranked. So we ended up getting to watch some of it. Well, I should say, the patrons were completely silent when Barack spoke, but totally heckled McCain and drank when he said certain things.

I saw these shoes at Macy’s on Michigan Avenue. They’re totally cute/ugly. I was surprised they were Marc Jacobs.

Don’t Be Fooled By XXI

Forever 21, Magnificent Mile, Chicago

I went to this new store on Michigan Avenue about mid-May. It had just opened and “XXI” was all over the windows. It looked kind of nice. The prices were cheap. After browsing around for about 20 minutes I realized I was inside Forever 21! Ahh! Sometimes I can find something good at that store, but most of the time nothing fits me right because everything there is, as the name implies, designed for a 21-year-old’s body. I did, however, find a cool necklace and it was only $5.95.

Are People Still Lining Up for the iPhone?

Apple Store, Michigan Avenue, Chicago

I can’t think of what else this line would be for. I walked past the Apple store a few times yesterday and the line only got longer, until there were about 30 people wrapped around the other side of the building.
