Herbs from the Gods

Last night we went to a party at a little inn that had a lot of old-fashioned hats. Of course we had to try them all on. It was an interesting time. There was a piano player that everyone loved because he could play and sing almost any song that was requested of him.

About the herbs: Jess’s Uncle Brenden gave us a whole tray of herbs to use this week while we’re visiting. His family is going out of town, he didn’t want them to go to waste, and he knew we (Julie specifically) like to cook. There is spearmint, oregano, basil, two kinds of parsley, and sage.

On Tuesday we had a FeedBurner company outing at Ravinia. The Robert Cray Band and Buddy Guy were performing that night. Ravinia is always nice and relaxing… Thousands of people all gathered in one place to sit out on the lawn, have some drinks, eat some great food, relax, enjoy each other’s company and listen to great music. This time was no exception.

On Thursday night a bunch of folks from Six Apart were in Chicago to have a party and demo their latest product, Vox. I did a post previously about Vox, so it may sound familiar, even though the product is not available to the public until about October. It was awesome to meet everyone from Six Apart and I tried not to be too much of a fangirl to Mena, but a photo of us together was required! I also found it cool to bring together my Chicagoist world with my FeedBurner world with the blogging in Chicago world and throw in Six Apart. Also, Krissy from Six Apart, who I’d been emailling with quite a bit to set up a Chicagoist reader contest, also is the Music Editor at SFist.

BlogHer ’06

In a few hours I leave for San Jose to go to the BlogHer conference. On Saturday I’ll be moderating a panel on how to make money off your blog. The panelists are Arieanna Foley and the famous Heather Armstrong, better known as Dooce. I’m a little nervous and anxious, but I think it should go well. I sort of just want to get this weekend over with so I can come home and finish packing and then move. Just so much stuff going on lately that I can’t concentrate.. then add this travel for me.. and Dallas has been travelling for work like crazy.

I am excited for this weekend because even though the Bay area is far from where I lived in San Diego, this is the first time I’m setting foot on California soil since I lived there, if you don’t count transferring through an airport on the way to Hawaii. It should be fun. On Saturday night Traci, a coworker of mine, and I are going up to San Francisco and hanging out with friends of hers. Then we fly out Sunday night. I haven’t been to SF for almost 10 years. It makes me feel really old that I can say something like that and be referencing a time in 1997 when I went for work to attend a Macromedia User Group Conference… man, I’ve been business traveling for over a decade! I’m ancient. But, to balance it out, last night I was walking with Michelle and Laura on Division Street. Laura doesn’t live in the area and Michelle lives a little farther north, by Wicker Park. I was telling them about places we go to on Division and I pointed out that my 30th birthday party was at Moonshine last year. Laura and Michelle are both several years younger than me and as we walked a beat or two went by, maybe a quarter block, and Laura said “uh.. did you say your 30th birthday? I thought you were like 24. ” W00T! Take THAT decade of business travel!

FeedBurner has grown so much that we needed to build out more office space. Luckily, we were able to do this just down the hallway from where our current office is, in a room we’ve been referring to as “SideBurner.” Before we put any furniture in SideBurner or had anyone officially move in, we had a party to break in the space. There were 2 pony kegs of Goose Island beer, at least a case of wine, and catering from Maggiano’s. Fun time! Later some of us went by De Cero for a drink, but it was not what we were in the mood for. Plus we couldn’t all sit together, so then we went to Jefferson Tap for a tower of onion rings and a round of Fat Tire.
