Out in Logan Square and Wrigleyville

The Hood Internet, Metro, Wrigleyville, Chicago

On Friday night Jess and I had dinner at Rustico Grill, formerly Rustik, in Logan Square. It’s new incarnation just opened this week and is kind of high-end Mexican. I was happy to have another restaurant, but really? This neighborhood does not need another Mexican restaurant. We thought the food was good, not outstanding. I won’t get into the part where we saw the bartender take a drink of Jess’s drink through her straw and then have the waiter serve it back to her. Still, I’d go again just because it’s so close.

After dinner we went to the Gapers Block party at Metro. Saw a lot of friends from Chicagoist and Gapers Block. I had a fun time. I liked The Hood Internet, a DJ, the best.

Later on we met up with Molly, Malachy and Dallas back in Logan Square at the Rocking Horse.

Menomona at Metro

November 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment

After TECH Cocktail, Alden, Jess, Justin, John and I went to see Menomona at Metro. I had my camera at TECH Cocktail and wasn’t going to be able to get into the show, so I had Jim at Chicagoist talk to Metro and I got a press pass that allowed me to bring my camera in. These are my photos of Menomona and one of the opening bands, Illinois.

On Saturday, we drove the car to the airport and parked and then took the Metro the rest of the way into Washington. That way when we came back so I could catch my flight, the car and my luggage and everything would already be at the airport.

We went out to the Woodley Park/Adams-Morgan station, where there was the tallest, steepest escalator I’ve every seen, I think. The neighborhoods there are pretty cool. Historic. Pretty. We had lunch right across the street from the Metro station at The Lebanese Taverna. We weren’t sure what to expect, but when we walked in to look at a menu, it smelled so good, we knew we had to stay.

The food at The Lebanese Taverna (menu) had a lot of things you’d find at a Greek or Middle Eastern or Turkish restaurant – falafel, hummus, kebabs – but then had other things that I’d never seen before that were uniquely Lebanese. The bread that was served with a sesame oil (or the hummus we ordered) was oblong and fluffy. And delicious. It reminded me of the poori you get at some Indian restaurants.

For an entree I got Fatteh bel Djaje, which is seasoned chunks of chicken breast layered over chick peas on toasted Lebanese bread, smothered with a warm yogurt sauce, pine nuts and garlic. It was great. I loved the mixture of textures – really tender chicken, with the yogurt sauce and the crunchy bread. Yum.

How crazy is it that on November 25 it was warm enough to sit outside with a light jacket on and eat lunch?

All Moved In

Roscoe Village, Chicago

Even if I can’t find anything, all the stuff is in the new place. Last night I turned my old keys in and got my deposit, so I officially live in Roscoe Village now. The reality of my new commute* set in this morning when I arrived late for a meeting at work – a meeting I didn’t know about because the email was sent out this weekend and I don’t have an internet connection at home yet. Hopefully that problem will be resolved tomorrow, but still, don’t expect much from me here for a bit.

* New commute is 30 minutes walking and 30 minutes on the train. The walk is split 15 minutes between the new apartment and the train and 15 minutes between work and the train.

After visiting the World War II Monument, Kelly and Jeff and I walked over to the National Museum of the American Indian, a museum that just opened a little over a year ago. Everything is so new there and I really liked the exhibits and how they incorporated video. Also, the restaurant there was pretty cool because it featured Native foods found throughout the Western Hemisphere.

After the museum we grabbed some dinner at a Thai restaurant near DuPont Circle. We finished off the night by seeing a Keegan Theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Church Street Theater.
