You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

Killian and Liz are surrounded by very artistic family and friends so it was no surprise that the music at their wedding was fabulous. Liz’s brothers Greg and Bill are really talented musicians. Greg has even toured with and recorded albums with Liz Phair, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Jewel, to name a few. For the wedding the brothers reunited their old band called Touche and played a whole set of 80′s crowd pleasers. You better believe that Dallas was their biggest fan!

Also, a few of Killian’s friends are really great DJs and took turns playing throughout the night. Imran (DJ Skor) played at dinner and before the band went on. Max played after the band and then Imran played a little more at the end. Everyone was so great. All of the guests danced like crazy.

Callie

Callie
Callie, New London, WI

Back when I was a teenager we had a cat that gave birth to a litter of kittens and then got really sick. Her kidneys failed and we had to make a decision of whether to try to save her or have her put down. It was an especially hard decision knowing that she had a whole litter of kittens to take care of, but in the end it didn’t look good and euthanasia seemed like the best option.

Callie Moving to WaupacaTo care for the kittens we had to buy formula and tiny bottles. My brother and I set our alarm clocks for every few hours and took turns feeding each of them for weeks. Until they were old enough to eat watered down food and then real food. When the kittens were big enough we gave them away, but kept one calico kitten for ourselves. Appropriately, we named her Callie.

Callie lived with my parents for the past 17 years. Over the weekend my parents had realized they hadn’t seen her for a while, which isn’t that odd. She had a warmly insulated house outside where she lived and my parents’ house is on a large plot of land with a woods and a pond and lots of hiding places. Callie and their other cat Bailey have the run of the land, as does the dog, Dakoda. They all spend a lot of time both inside and outside.

I just found out this morning that when my dad found Callie on Sunday it looked as though she was soundly sleeping in her cat house, like normal, except that she had actually passed on to kitty heaven sometime in her sleep. I’m saddened because we had her around for so long, but I know that she had a long, long life. Almost 20 years old! Still, when my mom sent these photos of her and our dog Max who passed on a couple years ago, they brought a tear to my eye. Callie was kind of a major grouch and a loner, so I didn’t think I’d miss her really, but when I think about how long she was in our family… I think there’s also a special bond because we had to be adopted mother to her when her own kitty mom died when she was a few days old.

RIP Callie & Max. At least they are back together now.

On Sunday my coworker Jessica had a housewarming barbecue at her new apartment in Logan Square. It was about 100 degrees outside in the shade, but once the sun went down a little more bearable. All it really meant was that we all drank our margaritas and beer faster than we should have. It was a fun time. And Jessica’s apartment is the cutest.

On a sidenote, I’m going to be starting a class at the Chicago Photography Center and in preparation I got this 50mm lens. I opted for the $70 lens instead of the $300 one. I can tell it’s cheap, but I figure if I really like it, I’ll upgrade to the more expensive lens later. Anyway, these photos were taken with the new 50mm lens.

Baby Quinn made such an early appearance a few weeks ago that Jen & Chad had their baby shower after he was born. Quinn wasn’t at the shower because he’s still in the hospital, but we did get to see photos and hear a lot of stories from the family. It kind of reminded me of Nancy’s baby shower when she announced they’d confirmed Riley’s adoption. In both we knew the baby’s sex, name, what they looked like, heard stories, etc. Maybe we should all just have celebrations after the babies are born and scrap the whole baby shower thing. I was never really into them anyway, although Saturday night’s baby shower was more like a regular night out except that it started way earlier (3pm) and we each brought a gift. Open bar and tons of food at an Irish pub.. that’s my kind of baby shower!

Last night was Trent & Allison’s birthday part at Black Rock. Their birthdays are on the same day of the same year, so starting last year, they’ve been having a combined party. There was this $25 all you can drink for 3 hours deal, which I should never do because I can’t drink that much and when I pay like that I feel like I need to get my money’s worth and then drink way too much. Plus, at the front bar they were serving huge mixed drinks.. like in pint glasses. My recovery the next day keeps getting longer and longer. I’m getting too old! But it was a fun time and fun to hang out with everyone. As always, when drinking a lot, the photos aren’t as great as I’d have liked. Nothing looks blurry on the little camera screen when your vision is blurred to begin with.
