Wedding After Party

March 20th, 2011 · No Comments

Since the wedding ended pretty early (10 p.m.), people headed back to Ho’Onani Estates for an after party. At the wedding everyone was happy and having a great time. We were drinking but no one got so drunk that they did anything crazy or embarassing. I can’t say the same is true for the after party! There was a wrestling match, drinking games, made up games, people falling asleep, people falling down, madness! I won’t really get into the details of the party, since it would be embarassing to everyone, but a good time was had. Most people left and I went to bed finally at about 3:30 a.m.!

Hanalei Valley & Lappert’s

March 17th, 2011 · No Comments

From Queen’s Bath, Jess, Ted, Richard, Amanda, and Stephanie went to Kilauea Lighthouse to watch the sunset. Paul Baker, Kate, Tien, Shannan and I decided to check out the Hanalei Valley Lookout….

…. and then, more importantly, stop for Lappert’s ice cream. As if there would be any doubt about it, I got the Kauai Pie, my favorite ice cream ever! It’s Kona coffee ice cream swirled wtih chocolate fudge, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts and vanilla cake crunch. Someday I will try another flavor, but not this day! This was my only Lappert’s on the whole trip!

On the first day of the trip some friends made a Costco run and we had them pick of several bottles of white wine and several of red. We were buying the wine for our wedding and needed to know which to buy cases of. During the week we had wine tastings and chose a white wine, but somehow we never tasted or picked a red wine.

Well, Jen didn’t go ziplining and just hung out by the Ho’Onani pool all day, so I assigned her the task of tasting the reds and picking one! Tough day for her! So, Jen texted me her choices and on the way home from the North Shore we met up with Dallas, Matt and Ross at Costco in Lihue where we bought a case and a half of our chosen white wine (Menage a Trois California White) and our red (Mirassou Pinot Noir). Yes, everyone had a menage a trois at the wedding!

Beirut

Dallas, Ross

Jordan

After Shipwrecks and lunch, we hung out at the house for a bit by the pool drinking and beers and what else? Tien’s pina coladas! My parents came over for a visit. Caroline and Tammy flew in from Phoenix at the same time as Rob from Maine, so they met up and came over to the house. Even Aunty Gail stopped by. Jess G. was scheduled to arrive at the airport later that night and Shannan and Tien were nice enough to volunteer to go get her and bring her back so I could stay with all of our guests. So thoughtful! As the days went on, more and more people arrived on Kauai and visited the house. It was fun to see everyone show up at the house.

For dinner that night we made hamburgers at the back house. Somehow an epic game of Beirut started that night. I never even played that game before and it became the most played game of the week.. even on our wedding night. My brother and I formed a team and honestly, I thought we were going to get killed, but we took on Chad and Trent and beat them after they won three times in a row! We were quickly taken down in the next round, but at least we won once!

Shipwreck Beach

March 13th, 2011 · 1 Comment

On Tuesday morning I took an oatmeal soak for my legs and then had breakfast at the house (yay berries & yogurt!). Matt, Ross, Dallas and I then headed over to Shipwreck Beach. We met up with Colleen, Marina and Laura, otherwise known as “The Boston Girls,” even though Laura moved to Los Angeles a couple years ago. Jordan and Liz joined us shortly after.

Shipwreck Beach quickly became a favorite of our friends on this trip. It was nearby (but not walking distance) and less crowded than the Sheraton Beach or Poipu Beach. Plus, it’s gorgeous and there are bathroom facilities and outdoor showers. Parking isn’t great, but usually you can find a spot.

Matt, Ross & Dallas. They catch a good one about 3/4 of the way through.

The water is a little more rough over at Shipwrecks than I like, but a lot of the guys were body surfing or using body boards so they all liked it. It’s also very rocky near the shoreline, but if you swim out you’ll get to a sandbar where you can stand and play in the surf. Just play it safe, there are not lifeguards here.

Matt, Ross, and Dallas

Some of the guys later on in the trip got up the courage to jump off the iconic cliff, Makawehi Point, at Shipwrecks. I’d have been more happy if they’d have done this after the wedding, as I was requesting of all people doing risky activities on the trip! Helicopter tour? After the wedding, please. Skydiving? After the wedding! Just read the comments on this post, if you want to learn about how risky this jump is! Bad idea, guys! But luckily, no one was hurt.

Around lunch time Matt, Ross, Dallas, Jordan, Liz and I went to Keoki’s Paradise, a favorite Poipu restaurant of ours. I had a delicious fresh fish (can’t remember what kind!) sandwich and a lava flow, of course. Later on I also tried a Maui Brewing Hot Blonde Lager because Ross could not stop talking about how refreshing it was. Our waitress told us they chill their beer down to 39* degrees. It was so nice after the hot beach.

* Dallas remembers them saying 29 degrees, but I think that would be ice?

First Night on Kauai

Ho’Onani Estates

Matt & Dallas in the Ho’Onani Pool

We checked into Ho’Onani Estates at 3 p.m., after all of our wedding-related meetings. Dallas and I were the first ones there, which turned out good, because we wanted the first pick of bedrooms. As people arrived they each picked rooms. As people settled in we all headed out to the pool. The pool wasn’t huge and the yard wasn’t huge, but it was big enough. And it was so refreshing after a long day of travel. Limey and Tien made pina coladas and they were so delicious to sip next to our private pool!

Kristin & Limey, already passed out!

Tien makes a pretty tasty pina colada for a guy from New York City

After a while, my parents came by for a visit, to see everyone, and to check out the houses. They were staying a few blocks away from us at the Poipu Kapili condos. They’d been to Kauai one time before but it was 10 years ago. I’m sure they were happy to be back!

Limey’s snake was thirsty for pina colada!

At night Matt grilled some steaks and we ate them with a caesar salad and poke at the front house. Important to note houses because we tried to switch off visiting at the front and back houses so that one house wouldn’t always be up late. If we switched off, at least you could rest every other night!

Getting out of this tequila shot was the best thing I did all night!

Later on Trent and Loden visited from the Sheraton, less than a 10 minute walk away. And my brother and Amanda, who were staying with my parents at Poipu Kapili, came by. We had a lively game of LRC. There were several people who never played before and the game got pretty intense. Also, not everyone had dollar bills so there were a lot of IOUs floating around. I still have a few “Ross dollars” and I don’t think anyone’s seen the end of them yet!

IOUs

One more thing, we got our first wedding gift of the trip from Cousin that day. Here’s what it was:

Wedding gift from Cousin.

How funny are these coasters? The first two are from my first trip to Kauai, when Dallas and I first met. The three where cousin has a mustache, otherwise known as the Coustache, are from the mustache-growing contest. The last one is… I don’t know! Some kind of sushi-eating binge. We used these coasters in the houses all through the week!
