De Cero for Lunch

Lunch @ De Cero, West Loop, Chicago

Today we went to lunch at De Cero to celebrate Mark joining the FeedBurner team.. and maybe also a very long overdue celebration of Paul joining the staff too? That’s debatable. So, De Cero it was. We love that place. Normally we would get a few tacos each a la carte but this time we just got 5 assorted taco platters and a lot of guacamole and chips. Awesome. These are the tacos I had: black bean, a half of a tres queso taco and a daily special taco that was braised lamb and adobo. Delicious. Also, I felt like the queen of the table because I was the only girl out with 12 boys!

My second day in New York I was supposed to meet Jeannette & Mark in Hells Kitchen for lunch but I accidentally took the wrong train out of Hoboken, where I was staying with Jessica, and ended up at Pavonia/Newport farther in to Jersey instead of Christopher Street in Manhattan. By the time I got on the right train, got to Christopher Street and took a cab up to meet them, I was like a half hour late. But we still had time to grab something to eat at Turkish Cuisine on 9th Avenue.

After lunch I walked past my old apartment on 9th Avenue. Some things remain the same there, but there are many new restaurants and places that weren’t there when I lived there. Like my apartment entrance used to be between West Side Sushi and Gotham Cabinet and Craft.. but now Gotham Cabinet and Craft is gone and the space it was in is empty. I wonder what will go in next. Just so Seven Brothers is still there.. I used to go to that deli every single day.

Next, I considered going to MOMA, but Jess was getting off work early and I wanted to meet up with her, so I just walked through the park a little bit. I think I will forever and ever be in love with Central Park.

Then I went downtown and since Jess hadn’t eaten anything all day, we went to Cafe Borgia on Prince Street in SoHo. I wasn’t hungry, really, so I just had some lemon sorbet in lemonade.

After running around downtown all day I was exhausted so I went to a little cafe on Houston and Thompson to sip some iced coffee and nibble some tiramisu. .. to let NYC pass me by instead of trying to wade through it. After a while my iced coffee became wine and Jeannette, Jessica and Mark met up with me for a few more drinks. Then Jess and I met up with Jen for some dinner at Sushi Samba.

Goodbye Ruby

Ruby & Rachelle

In October 2000, Mark and I went to Comp USA in Kearny Mesa and I adopted Ruby. Since then she’s been with me through thick and thin, from California to New York and finally making her way with me to Chicago last year. I love her dearly. But 6 years is a long time, and in computer years she’s got to be about 96 years old and it’s starting to show. Slowness when trying to switch applications, not being able to handle Flash in a browser without having a nervous breakdown.. as long as 2 years ago when I talked Ted into buying the new SimCity and burning me a copy, Ruby refused to play that new fangled shit. These days we’ve got this relationship where we both love each other but I curse her out constantly for being so slow and not doing what I want and she’s hating on me for asking her to do things that she obvs can’t handle doing.

change.jpgSo the time has come. For a year or more I’ve been saying I should get a new computer. Then for the past 6 months I’ve said I’d buy a new computer when this change jar is full and I could cash it in and use it towards a new computer. Then for the past 3 weeks, with the jar full, I’ve procrastinated about what kind of computer I wanted. Finally, this weekend, I ordered a new iBook. I just got notice from Apple that it is with FedEx right now. I hope our network can handle me pressing refresh on the tracking screen every 2 minutes.

I’m really excited to get the iBook and to get a computer that’s going to actually work, and not at a 96-year-old granny pace, but still, I’m sad to let Ruby go.

Btw, how much change do you think is in this jar? I’ve got to cash it in like .. uh.. now, but am dreading lugging it somewhere. The bottom change doesn’t have quarters because it’s from New York and I needed them for laundry. The top change is full of quarters and even has a silver dollar on the top.

These were some of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s First Birthday Happy Hour. It was amazing to get the Chicagoist team together with all of our readers and fans and to think that just over a year ago I’d just moved here and didn’t know anything about anything and now we’re running a successful website that’s challenging the way the local traditional media does things.
