Roundarch Team Dinner at Prosecco

August 29th, 2011 · No Comments

Last week we had a Roundarch team dinner at Prosecco, an Italian restaurant on the Near North Side. Prosecco has a huge selection of wine and one of the largest selections of Italian sparkling wine in Chicago.

I’d never been to Prosecco before and the menu online looked good, so I was excited to try this place. Upstairs the dining room was really pretty and brightly lit. Our private party was taking place downstairs in the private room/wine cellar.

Before dinner we enjoyed some Italian wines, prosecco (of course), and Italian beer.

For dinner we were all seated at four tables. There were menus at the table and each course had several things listed.

Primi

  • Mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, carrots, red wine vinaigrette

Secondi

  • Rigatoni, pancetta, italian sausage, light tomato cream sauce
  • Risotto, sauteed beef tenderloin, diced tomatoes, fresh herbs, Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • Orecchiette, wild mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus, black truffle cream, shaved Grana Padano, white truffle oil

Terzi

  • Sauteed monk fish medallions, sauteed spinach, lobster sauce drizzle
  • Scaloppine of pork, cremini mushrooms, Prosciutto di Parma, Marsala wine reduction
  • Balsamic-marinated chicken breast, basil-bread crumbs, portabello mushrooms, fresh mozarella, Dolcetto d’Alba reduction, asparagus
  • Grilled egplant, fresh and smoked mozarella, tomato sauce

Quarti

  • Baked apple tart, caramel drizzle
  • Chocolate flourless cake, crema inglese, mixed berry sauce
  • Peach gelato and lemon-basil sorbet

I thought we would be choosing what we wanted from each course, but it ended up that they served everything family style.

For some reason people at our table were discussing the things that should never be discussed at work outings: Politics and Religion.

The big bosses said a few words of thanks and appreciation.

Oh, and a few behind the scenes photos from a secret team project taken earlier in the evening:

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

August 17th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Over the weekend Dallas and I drove up to Wisconsin to visit my parents. They moved from their house in Waupaca to a new house in Greenville shortly before our wedding in February, but we just have not gotten a chance to get up and see it until now. The area where they live is very nice. The house is newer, the yard is bigger than a city lot, but not too big to keep up. I realized when I got home that I had not even one photo from their house!

When we arrived, we hung around and barbecued. My cousins Dawn and Kelly visited. Kelly brought Mark along and it was nice to finally meet him. We ate tons of food. I can’t even think of it all: Spinach dip, fruit salad, homemade salsa, Kelly brought pasta salad, turkey burgers, salmon, brats, cheddarwurst… We brought down Chicago-brewed Finch’s beer, my dad had some Wisconsin-brewed Central Waters, and there was also the local classic, Miller Lite.

After dinner, my mom and dad treated us to a baseball game at Fox Cities Stadium. This is where the minor league Wisconsin Timber Rattlers play. The stadium was just opened right before I moved away from Wisconsin. I’d been to a game there maybe once or twice, but it had been 10+ years ago.

It was a fun time. Something different to do. The crowd there was really into the game. The Wisconsin Timbler Rattlers were playing the Quad Cities River Bandits. Before the game my dad made me get my photo taken with the Timber Rattler’s mascot, Fang. So, I stood in line behind the 8-year-olds and got my photo taken. I think it turned out cute, though.

From concessions, we drank beer specially made for the Timber Rattlers: Snaketail Ale and Rattler Brau Scottish Ale. Both are locally made in Appleton by the Stone Cellar Brew Pub. The Snaketail Ale was pretty good.

The Sweet Adelines sang the Star Spangled Banner.

Our seats were right behind Home Plate. At $10, they were the most expensive seats in the park!

Strange bachelorette party in front of us.

Post-game fireworks.

The game itself was pretty interesting. The Timber Rattlers did not get even one run, but it was still fun. Dallas wasn’t cheering for them anyway! We were looking through the program before the game started and he noticed that the opposing team had a player, Kolten Wong, from Hilo who went to Dallas’s old school, Kamehameha, so he decided to cheer for them!

Minor League games are a lot different than Major League. Most notably, everything has a sponsor. Everything. Even the lighting was sponsored by a local lighting company. And in between batting and innings, there were all kinds of promos. Tons of promos. And they, of course, were all sponsored. Dallas said maybe this is to off set the cost of the stadium?

After the game we stayed in our seats for a fireworks show. It was pretty good. We didn’t see fireworks on the Fourth of July, so this made up for that. Mark and Kelly headed home and Dawn came over to my parents to visit just a bit longer, while Dallas attempted to polish off the last of her spinach dip. (He didn’t succeed but we took it home and he finished it the next night!)

Blueberry Hill Pancake House, Appleton, WI

In the morning we got up and went to breakfast at Blueberry Hill Pancake House, a place Dawn recommended to us. She mentioned it was the old Country Kitchen, but it wasn’t until I was inside sitting down that I realized how many times I’d been there before. Late night and for breakfasts and dinners. Total flashback!

Overall a great trip to Wisconsin. Short, but still good. It was nice to finally see where my parents are living. I’m a little envious of their yard and patio off the dining room. I wish we had a bit more grass. Anyway, their place is nice and they seem to really enjoy it and that’s what counts.

Every year Roundarch has a summer event (see 2009, 2008), but this year’s event was extra special because we were also celebrating our 10 year anniversary.

This summer everyone was flown in from all the other offices and everyone stayed at the Trump. Many, many meetings were held there and then our party was at the Shedd Aquarium. The drinks were flowing all night long and the food was very good as well. I felt a little weird about eating sushi at the Aquarium, but not so bad that I didn’t indulge in it! It was fun to see everyone that I work with in all the other offices. Great party, Roundarch!

I work on the United States Air Force team at Roundarch. Yesterday we got these cool track jackets that have both the Roundarch and USAF logos on them and then we posed for a photo. This is only part of the team and you can’t see the logos because they’re on the back. Oops!

Getting blurry! Kidding. I was messing with John’s external flash.

Thursday night was our Roundarch client team holiday party and Friday night was our company holiday party. The company party was at Blue Water Grill, where Dallas and I went once for my birthday. We thought it was good, but overpriced. But when you’re company is paying for you to eat and drink for free all night, you kind of just concentrate on the yum factor. We had a full dinner, but I really liked the free maki station they had going on. I could have skipped the dinner and just eaten that all night! They also had the largest shrimp cocktail I’ve ever seen. So delicious.

Dallas is in West Palm Beach for work this weekend so I made a pact with my coworker Ryan that we would leave early. He had another party to go to and I wanted to call it a night at about 9:00 p.m. because the cookie party was on Saturday. The pact didn’t really work out. I think we were drinking too much and having too much fun to leave. There were secret ninjas refilling my wine glass when I wasn’t looking and we didn’t end up leaving until 12:30 a.m. I don’t know how long the party went on, but that was 6 1/2 hours of free booze and I had way more than my fair share!
