We could not be more happy with how Steve captured the spirit of the day and all the little moments and emotions. We love Steve’s style, how saturated the photos are. It went really nicely in the tropical setting. I could not pick just a few favorite photos from the day, so I posted a whole bunch below!

At 5:30 a.m. we got up and headed down to the Honokohau Marina near Kona. Chris chartered a boat for us to go deep sea fishing! I thought it would be really expensive, but we were able to get a private boat and captain for a half day and it came to about $50 per person and we got to keep any fish we caught!
Captain Bob took us out on his boat, the Thrill Seeker. When asked what kind of fish we wanted to catch, I said “Delicious ones!” Danny planned to cook up the fish we caught for dinner that night, since they were staying in a condo with a full kitchen and grill. Captain Bob said he’d try to get us some ono, ahi or mahi. I think he also goes for marlin (black, blue, or striped).
At the marina, before heading out, we each took Dramamine. No one wanted to be stuck out on a boat for 4 hours puking their guts out because they were seasick.
Unknown side effect of Dramamine: Drowsiness. Not even just a little tired… but like crash-out sleep!
The good news is that no one got seasick. The bad news is that we all slept for most of the boat ride! The good news? No one missed anything. The bad news? We didn’t miss anything because we caught ZERO fish!
We did get to see some schools of spinner dolphins and a bunch of whales, not humpbacks, but a smaller kind of whale.
Sign in the bathroom: “Please do not put anything in the “head” unless you have eaten it first. “Head” is boat-speak for “toilet.”
At the end I was kind of disappointed, but it’s not like Captain Bob can guarantee that you’re going to catch fish. He did tell us that about 35% of his customers are repeats because they’re happy, so I’m sure he catches fish often… just not with us! As Chris said, “this is why they call it fishing, not catching.” So, we paid for a chartered boat to take us on a beautiful sunrise trip, basically. It looked like this. For four hours:
Since we still wanted to Danny to cook us dinner, after we were done fishing (or not fishing) we went to the Bite Me Fish Market at the marina and to Costco in Kona to buy fish and things for dinner!
On Tuesday morning I took an oatmeal soak for my legs and then had breakfast at the house (yay berries & yogurt!). Matt, Ross, Dallas and I then headed over to Shipwreck Beach. We met up with Colleen, Marina and Laura, otherwise known as “The Boston Girls,” even though Laura moved to Los Angeles a couple years ago. Jordan and Liz joined us shortly after.
Shipwreck Beach quickly became a favorite of our friends on this trip. It was nearby (but not walking distance) and less crowded than the Sheraton Beach or Poipu Beach. Plus, it’s gorgeous and there are bathroom facilities and outdoor showers. Parking isn’t great, but usually you can find a spot.

The water is a little more rough over at Shipwrecks than I like, but a lot of the guys were body surfing or using body boards so they all liked it. It’s also very rocky near the shoreline, but if you swim out you’ll get to a sandbar where you can stand and play in the surf. Just play it safe, there are not lifeguards here.

Some of the guys later on in the trip got up the courage to jump off the iconic cliff, Makawehi Point, at Shipwrecks. I’d have been more happy if they’d have done this after the wedding, as I was requesting of all people doing risky activities on the trip! Helicopter tour? After the wedding, please. Skydiving? After the wedding! Just read the comments on this post, if you want to learn about how risky this jump is! Bad idea, guys! But luckily, no one was hurt.
Around lunch time Matt, Ross, Dallas, Jordan, Liz and I went to Keoki’s Paradise, a favorite Poipu restaurant of ours. I had a delicious fresh fish (can’t remember what kind!) sandwich and a lava flow, of course. Later on I also tried a Maui Brewing Hot Blonde Lager because Ross could not stop talking about how refreshing it was. Our waitress told us they chill their beer down to 39* degrees. It was so nice after the hot beach.
* Dallas remembers them saying 29 degrees, but I think that would be ice?
Last few photos from Killian & Liz’s wedding. The views from the yacht club really were beautiful. You could see the sailboats and the lake, the skyline, navy pier, etc. These photos were all taken from the southern-facing deck of the ship.
After the reception we headed to Chi Bar, which is located at the Sheraton and was where some of the wedding party were staying.
Liz and Kilian are getting married at the Columbia Yacht Club tonight. This is a preview of what will go down. Well, maybe. The wind has been so ridiculous these past few days. Tonight if it’s as windy as it was last night then the wedding will take place on the lower, tented deck of the ship (the yacht club is actually a docked ship). Dallas is a groomsman in the wedding. I’m not in the wedding party, but I’m walking him down the aisle just to balance out the boy/girl ratio. Killian and his brothers Malachy and Naoise grew up at the yacht club sailing, so to have their wedding there means a lot to them. I think it’s going to be so much fun. I can’t wait for later tonight!
