Hamura’s Saimin Stand

March 22nd, 2011 · No Comments

On our last day on Kauai we packed all of our stuff up and checked out of our house. I went to the Poipu Shopping Village with Matt and Ross for a bit. Then we headed over to the Makahuena where Dallas’s parents and sister were staying. We had to sort out some financials with our wedding gifts so we weren’t carrying around a bunch of stuff for the rest of our trip. From there we headed into Lihue. Caroline, Tammy and I stopped at the bank and then at Hilo Hattie for some gifts. After that we met up with Ross, Matt, Jordan and Dallas at Hamura’s Saimin Stand.

Hamura’s is a hole-in-the-wall kind of place on a back street of Lihue that is popular with the locals. It’s nothing to look at inside, just a big menu on the wall and u-shaped counter seating. Dallas has been telling me they have the best saimin on the planet for the entire time I’ve known him. Dallas has been to Hamura’s on visits back to Kauai but for some reason I’ve never been there before this trip.

I ordered a wonton saimin.

Dallas ordered the extra large special saimin, that had the works.

We also passed around and shared crispy wontons, shrimp tempura and barbecue sticks of chicken and beef.

This saimin was so delicious! And so filling.

I heard that Hamura’s is also known for their lilikoi chiffon pie, so even though we were all stuffed to the max, I had to order a slice just to try. I mean, who knows when I’d be back! I thought the pie was good and so light and fluffy, but not like amazing. Maybe it’s because I was already so full, but I’d say stick with the saimin! You cannot go wrong. SO good.

Our last morning at our condo. I just took a little walk outside enjoying the sun and the quietness. And the flowers. These jasmine grow in a log row of bushes along side of the pool area. Kaua’i, I miss you! All I have now is this desktop background:

Makahuena, Poipu, Kaua’i

By now the Makahuena is like our home away from home in Poipu, Kaua’i. This was my third time staying there and Dallas has stayed there at least twice as many times as me. It’s nice to get to know the South Shore and Poipu and Koloa Town so well and have it as a home base every time.

This year we had a lot of people so we got two condos. The one I stayed in was 3 levels, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, with a great kitchen (stainless steel appliances and marble countertops) and living room area. The other condo was a a little less homey and less nicely furnished and decorated, but it was huge. The living area was about double as big as ours and it was right on the oceanside. But it was also under construction on the outside, which made it noisy. That condo was 2 bedrooms. The rates on each condo were more than we’ve paid in the past, but still only about half of what everyone else pays and when you split it all up, it’s megacheap.

The Makahuena

July 17th, 2005 · 2 Comments

No, it’s not a new dance craze.. the Makahuena is the condo complex where we stayed in Poipu, Kaua’i. The same one we stayed in last year. Except last year we had a 3 story, 4 bathroom suite and this year our unit was all on the same floor, still 3 bedrooms, but only 2 bathrooms.

I love waking up in the morning, making some Hawaiian coffee and reading either the Garden Island or the Honolulu Advertiser on the lanai overlooking the ocean.

After we checked into our condo on the day we arrived, we went and got some late night snacks – poke, inari, Maui chips. Around the condo we kept all kinds of local favorites to grind – poke (hot chile poke, tako poke, salmon poke, a traditional seaweed/onion poke) shrimp chips, seared ahi, various kinds of sushi, haupia, and boiled peanuts. If this vacation had a subtitle it was “The Vacation Where I Ate Raw Fish Every Day.”

One other note – this year we barely hung out at the pool at all where last year we were there every minute we were at the condo. Why? This year there were less people who enjoyed that sort of thing, but the main reason is THE KIDS!! In the summer all the kids are on break and on vacation with their families. So much for relaxing by the pool! I could barely sit there with a bunch of kids kicking and splashing and screaming and laughing and arguing. Instead we found a secluded beach nearby and went back there a couple times.

I’d be willing to bet that 90% of our time spent at the condo was spent down by the pool. On Friday most of us did nothing but lay around and drink some sort of fruit juice/lemonade/vodka concoction or beer. It was a day of relaxation. Rob & I watched the sun set before getting ready for our last dinner on Kaua’i.
