Hanging out on the North Shore

March 9th, 2011 · No Comments

On Friday I did my gym/ABC Store/Honolulu routine again. After that Dallas and I went shopping. He was planning on wearing shorts and slippers for the wedding, so at the very least I wanted him to go buy some nice shorts and slippers. At Macy’s they had a bunch of really nice Quiksilver shorts. Dallas ended up getting a few pairs.. and a new pair of Scott Hawaii (his favorite brand) slippers with leather straps. Ohhh la la. Not to be left out of the shopping spree, I got a new pair of Quiksilver/Roxy slippers. And we randomly passed by this cell phone accessory store where we each got a new iPhone case. Mine was all cracked! And Dallas has always hated his big, bulky case.

Jen and Kristin were on a spa retreat so after shopping Dallas and I met up wtih Chad and Cousin and had lunch at the Curry House, another one of our favorite Honolulu restaurants. Check out a couple previous visits to Curry House: 2007, 2009.

After lunch we drove up to Oahu’s north shore to Waimea Valley. Dallas’s friend Hoku works at Waimea Valley. We strolled our way to the back and took a dip in the waterfall like we did last time we visited. So much fun!

Hmm.. let’s see a close up of that one….

Lulz. They look like drowned rats! Doing the Shaka!

On the stroll back out, away from the waterfall, I took all of these beautiful photos of Waimea Valley:

When Hoku was done with work we stopped at Foodland and then went back to his house for a barbecue. Jen and Kristin met us there too. We ate so much! Chicken, steak, sausage, ahi, maui chips, mac nuts and two kinds of poke – limu and shoyu. Yum!

Marc Burger

August 2nd, 2010 · No Comments

I’ve mentioned before how sometimes my coworkers and I go to the fancy Macy’s food court for lunch. I’d been to Rick Bayless’ Frontera Fresco and I’d been to Takashi Yagihashi’s noodle place, so one day back in May I decided to try out Marcus Samuelsson’s Marc Burger.

I ordered the turkey burger with cumin, chives, and chipotle mayonnaise. It was good but not like mind blowing. I thought the garlic and cracked pepper fries were great and the homemade spicy ketchup was even better.

It was fun to visit Marcus Samuelsson’s restaurant while watching Top Chef Masters on TV. And even better when he went on to win a few weeks later! Now I need to visit his high-end restaurant in Chicago, C-House.

Seven on State

June 17th, 2010 · 1 Comment

A couple of my coworkers love to go to Macy’s food court, Seven on State, for lunch. This is a high-end food court with offerrings from Takashi Yagihashi, Marcus Samuelsson, and Rick Bayless. My coworkers particularly like Chef Yagihashi’s spot, Noodles by Takashi.

There’s another part of this food court where they just serve soups and sandwiches and salads. Usually I got to the salad spot. They do a pretty good job with interestingness and fresh ingredients. I wish the line for Frontera Fresco wasn’t so long. I’d hit that every time! Ah well. I try to only go out for lunch one time per week or less. This is a good change of pace now and then.

The Pineapple Room by Alan Wong

June 18th, 2009 · 1 Comment

In 1992 Alan Wong cofounded what is known as Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Wong is a James Beard Award winner and I’ve always wanted to visit one of his restaurants. A friend clued me in to the fact that The Pineapple Room in Ala Moana Shopping Center is an affordable lunch option and a good way to taste Wong’s food without spending a lot of money, so after I shook off the paparazzi, I decided to get lunch there.

The entrance to The Pineapple room is kind of strange because the restaurant it located on the 3rd floor of Macy’s. So you’re browsing yellow tank tops and then a foot over you’re sitting down and eating lunch.

Once you’re inside, The Pineapple Room looks like any other restaurant.

I looked at the menu and was interested in the kalua pig BLT. Then I noticed that there is something called the Express Lunch where you could get your choice of soup, a half Caesar salad, the kalua pig BLT, chocolate macadamia nut brownies with vanilla ice cream, and your choice of coffee or tea for only a few bucks more (something like $22 vs. $14.50). I thought this would be a good way to sample more from the menu. I noticed that there were some desserts on the menu that seemed more local and included things like lilikoi and haupia so I asked the waiter if I could sub out the dessert in the Express Lunch. He said usually it’s not done, but he let me pick another anyway.

First up, everyone gets a bread basket with a side of chili pepper aoli.

For my soup I picked the chilled Hamakua Springs tomato soup with avocado salsa and chilled shrimp. The avocado and shrimp were on the bottom of the bowl hanging out like a tasty surprise when you dipped your spoon in.

The kalua pig BLT came on an onion bun with a half Caesar salad.

I ate this sandwich with my eyes and my camera before I ate it with my mouth. A little too much so that my camera battery died as I was taking this last one. But it was so worth it. Look at that pork on pork.

Luckily I had my cell phone’s camera. The photo quality on my phone is pretty horrible, but I still shot this alright photo of my lilikoi cheesecake with lilikoi and guava sauces.

Everything was super delicious, but I was so stuffed! I wandered around Ala Moana for the rest of the day with my stomach protruding over my waistband, not wanting to try any clothes on. Also, a stomach full of pork on a sweltering day is not exactly a good feeling, but it was so worth it!

It’s so much easier to zip downtown on the Blue Line at the new condo in Logan Square. When we were in Roscoe Village it took about an hour to get downtown, and now? 20 minutes about. One weekend in January Dallas and I went down to Macy’s so we could look at suits. Dallas had been reading a lot of mens magazines when he was travelling a lot and wanted to get a lighter gray suit. We ended up finding a great Michael Kors suit that was also a great sale price. Dallas got fitted for the suit and while it was getting tailored we went to grab some lunch.

Macy’s has a fancy food court. I went to Rick BaylessFrontera Fresco a couple years ago, but we have never tried Marcus Samuelsson‘s Marc Burger or Takashi Yagihashi’s Noodles by Takashi Yagihashi. We chose the noodles.

Over at Chicagoist, Anthony recently posted a review of Noodles by Takashi Yagihashi. Dallas and I both weighed in on our opinions of the place. Basically the food was good, but expensive. Dallas got a soup and I got fried rice. We also tried a shrimp wonton appetizer. We were excited to see “pork buns” on the menu because we thought we’d be getting a small char siu bao, but the buns actually were like whole sandwiches. It was too much food, which also added to the reason that it was more than we expected to spend. I’d go back and just order less. I enjoyed the food.
