At the Logan Square farmers market this week we got some amazing raspberries, blueberries, and peaches from Lyons Fruit Farm (MI) and some cherry tomatoes from Piedt Farms (MI). I mean, seriously, you don’t realize how bland the supermarket stuff is til you eat the fruit and vegetables from the farmers market. The peaches were perfectly ripe and so sweet and juicy. Makai ate one right there. I think it was his first peach and now he’s been eating one every night for dessert after dinner. I also got a rosemary sea salt caramel from Katherine Anne Confections (Chicago), some cheese curds from Ludwig Farmstead Creamery (Fithian, IL), and some spicy stir fry tofu from Phoenix Bean (Chicago).

Dallas stayed home to meet with a mason contractor (long story) so I brought home lunch. We had pierogi from Pierogi Street, some Indian bao from Bombay Breakdown and a Filipino empanada from Pecking Order.

It had been several weeks since we visited the market, so it was good to be back. This is how Makai likes to eat his raspberries, as he was doing on the stroller ride home:

Logan Square Farmers Market 2011

The first weekend of the Logan Square Farmers Market was the weekend I was in Wisconsin, so I missed it… but I made up for it this past Saturday. It’s still early in the season and this has been such a cold wet year. There were a lot of strawberries and tomatoes, lettuce and potted plants.. but not a ton of produce yet. I ended up getting more prepared foods than produce.

Also, at the River Valley Kitchens stand, they accept credit cards with one of those Square iPhone add-ons. I’ve seen them online, but not in person. Seconds after he ran my card I got this receipt texted to me:

Here’s everything I got: Rare Bird strawberry rhubarb preserves ($9), River Valley Kitchens 5-Cheese Garlic Spread ($8), River Valley Kitchens cherry vanilla granola ($6), Crumb olive focaccia bun ($3), Crumb asparagus feta ricotta bun ($3), Golden Rise sourdough ($7), Brockway Farms lettuce ($3), Lyons Fruit Farm strawberries ($6).
