Occupy Chicago

November 18th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Last night at a little after 4 p.m. Occupy Chicago took over the LaSalle Street bridge outside my office and blocked up all traffic. I found out about it from reading my coworker’s Facebook status and went over to see what the commotion was. When I got there it was near the end of the protest, which lasted about a half hour. We saw police arresting people who would not leave. Of the thousands of people protesting, 46 were given tickets. The whole thing broke up just before 5 p.m. when the group walked south on LaSalle, taking up the width of the street, down to Jackson (where the Chicago Board of Trade is). When I left work at about 5:20 p.m. there were no more protesters around, except a few talking to the media. There were still some policemen lingering and I could hear helicopters overhead. Read more at the Chicago Tribune. Also check out Chicagoist’s coverage. Lots of great photos there.

Our office in New York is in a building in Lower Manhattan and the Occupy protesters there caused the building to be on lockdown. I heard there was a lot of Occupy ruckus in LA yesterday too.

P.S. I saw this photo on Twitter and thought it was an interesting reverse view, from the protest. The building is 300 N. LaSalle, just south of the building I work in. You can see 300 N. LaSalle in my photos.

Last night I went to a party in Park Slope and didn’t get home until 9:00 this morning. (Long story). I still somehow managed to meet up at Ping’s for dim sum at 11:30 a.m. Afterwards we met Sarah at Pho Bang where we got some Vietnamese iced coffee and Sarah got Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches).

Jessica in the Cadillac SRX
Jessica, Brooklyn

Sarah reviews cars for her job and this week has a Cadillac SRX so she volunteered to drive us out to Prospect Heights in Brooklyn where I was scheduled to look at an apartment. I’m so out of touch with cars these days and for the most part Sarah always has high-end cars so I’m always impressed with the features on them. This one had a theater system in the second row and power-folding third row seating. We were watching Scratch – that’s Mix Master Mike with Jess.

Jess walked down to Park Slope to visit with some other friends while the rest of us rushed back down to Lower Manhattan. Sarah wasn’t feeling well, so she just dropped us off. Heather Champ is in town and was having a group photo taken for the 20,000 photo submission to the Mirror Project site. Unfortunately, we hit a ton of traffic in Brooklyn and got there late. We took our own photo anyway. Sucks.. I really wanted to say “hello” to Heather. Oh well.. maybe she’ll be at SXSW again next year.

Numbers on Water St & John St.

Jeannette & Yvan & Eleanor caught the bus uptown and I walked to the subway. I was starting to crash and when I passed by these numbers on the corner of Water St. & John St. it really confused me. Does anyone know what they are? I thought it was a calendar, but there are too many numbers.. and the number 5 was lit up.

My Phone Number Has Been Changed
My Phone Number Has Been Changed, Tribeca, Manhattan

Ted told me that these flyers are being posted all over the neighborhood we live in. When I walked outside of work there was one posted on the sidewalk mailbox. Are they all over Lower Manhattan? I called the phone number expecting something promotional and what I got was a low quality answering machine message, a male voice saying “Hi, you’ve reached my new number. Please leave a message” then the answering machine beeeeeeeeeep. Doing a reverse look-up on AnyWho didn’t yield any results. … must do more investigation. .
