Kandy Korner, Hyannis, Cape Cod

Jess took us on kind of a strolling tour down Main Street in Hyannis, telling us where she used to hang out and cruise when she was young and would spend summers at the Cape. After dinner and stopping at the big chair, she took us to Kandy Korner, a place that was and still is a major teen hang-out.

Kandy Korner reminded me a lot of another candy store Jess and I had visited, Economy Candy (on the Lower East Side in NY). Both had every kind of old-timey candy you could think of. At Kandy Korner, though, you just grab a basket and fill it up with whatever individually wrapped candies you wanted. They ranged from about $0.05 – $0.25 per item. At Economy you had to buy whole boxes or packages of things. I think I preferred Kandy Korner because you could try a larger variety of candy and not calorically or monetarily commit to a whole box. Also, Kandy Korner makes a lot of its own homemade candies and has many other novelties.

Update: I bought Mallo Cups at Kandy Korner and noticed the enclosed rebate offer. You only have to save up 500 points to earn a $1 rebate check. One 16-oz package of Mallow Cups will get you 5 points, so you only have to eat 100 packs to earn a buck! I also noticed that the address to send your points in is Altoona, PA, which reminded me of Sean, Altoona’s most famous past resident.

Lower East Side Tenement Museum
Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Yesterday Jess and I had lunch at 88 Orchard and then went to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. It was really good, if you haven’t been there, you should go. The museum has preserved an actual tenement building and access to it is by tour only. There are three different tours to choose from and we chose a tour called “Getting By: Weather the Great Depressions of 1873 and 1929″. This hour-long tour takes you through 3 apartments in the tenement building. The first apartment is unfurnished and somewhat dilapidated. This apartment has not been restored at all and is almost exactly as it was discovered when the museum purchased the building. It is used to show the layout of each of the apartments and to explain their features. The next apartment has been restored to the period of the 1870s. At this time the Gumpertz family, a German-Jewish family, lived in the apartment. You get to see how the apartment would have been furnished when the family lived there and the tour guide walks you through the history of the family and what everything in the apartment is. The last apartment was that of the Badizza family, a Sicilian-Catholic family that lived in the apartment in the 1930s. Again, you are told about the family and the apartment. What was really great about this apartment was the woman who lived there as a child contacted the museum a while back and gave an oral history of living there. So.. you not only got to hear the tour guide’s description, you got to hear stories of the apartment in the words and voice of someone who actually lived there.

Our tour guide was Carlo d’Amore. He did an awesome job giving us historical facts but throwing in personal stories and jokes to keep things lively. It helped that he was kind of hot. Also, at one point early on he stopped the tour to point at me and say “Has anyone ever told you you look like Renee Zellweger!?”. To which I replied, “Yes, all the time.”

After the tour (and purchasing far too many books) Jess and I headed over to Economy Candy. I’d heard Jeannette talk about this store before but I’d never been inside. It’s so fun. An entire store filled from front to back, floor to ceiling with candy!!!!

A quick dash uptown to stock up on skin care products from Mario Badescu, and then Jess and I went home to rent Gangs of New York and to eat candy!!! heh. We picked Gangs of New York because I thought it would drive home some of the things that we saw at the Tenement Museum. I’d already seen the movie and read the book. And read Five Points, a book on similar subjects, so going to the museum then seeing the movie again brought everything together for me.

The Livingroom
Lamp at The Living Room, Lower East Side, Manhattan

1. Has anyone read any good books on web design, web development, interaction design, information architecture, and/or photography lately?

2. My billing cycle ends next week and includes charges for my bandwidth overage from when I was getting 2,000 – 3,000 hits/day to the Street Writing Project. The bill is only going to be about $112 but that’s $112 that won’t be spent on your Christmas presents! If you want to donate a dollar (or two) to my hosting bill click here. After I pay this bill, the problem should be fixed since Peter is hosting the project for me on 3jane servers.

3. I’m experimenting with an “On This Day” feature on the right-hand sidebar. It will list posts from the current day on previous years. I’m not sure it’s working right yet, so be patient with it for a while.

4. I’m currently wondering why I’m so tired, why airfare is so expensive, if I could live in Chicago, if my niece’s eyes will stay blue, and what Kelly & Jeff & I will be up to when they get here on Saturday. I’m feeling a bit depressed about holiday weight gain (and Christmas isn’t even here yet!) but am managing to enjoy Lou Bega’s Mambo #5 and the photo above I found from my visit to The Living Room in October.

Pas/Cal
Pas/Cal, The Living Room, Lower East Side, Manhattan

A few months ago Eric gave me some mp3s and said “Rachelle, you’ve got to check out this band!”. Thus began my obsession with Pas/Cal. When I heard that they were going to be playing at The Living Room as part of the CMJ Music Marathon I got very excited. Pas/Cal hails out of Detroit, MI and isn’t yet doing national tours. Most of their gigs are local to the Detroit/Dearborn area so I knew I could not miss the show on Friday night. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint in the least. If possible, I like them even more now.

I was surprised when Pas/Cal came out and they have 7 members in their band. Casimer Pascal & LTD (Little Tommy Daniels) formed Pas/Cal in 2001. Casimer plays lead guitar and sings lead vocals and LTD is the drummer. Soon the band grew to include guitarist Gene Corduroy, Amy (Bem) Bem on vocals/keyboard/percussion, Nathan Burgundy on bass and Richard Panic on keyboards. In January of this year Pas/Cal recorded their first EP, The Handbag Memoirs, on Le Grand Magistery. Their second EP, Oh Honey, We’re Ridiculous, is due out soon.

Ok. So .. I knew Casimer’s voice was good, but I wasn’t prepared when he walked up to the mic in a 3-piece suit with his hands on his hips and belted out the opening lines of This Ain’t For Everyone. He has a beautiful voice. His stage presence has him bouncing all over and he’s got that so-nerdy-it-hurts-HOT thang going on. Kind of like Beck, but not. The show was great, I didn’t look away for one second. They played four songs from The Handbag Memoirs and about 3 more that will be on Oh Honey, We’re Rediculous. After the show, on the way out, I stopped and talked to Casimer to tell him what a great show it was. Also spoke to the keyboardist about the band, about Friendster, and about buying an EP.

Movie Clips (the visual on these isn’t that great because of the lighting, but the audio is good. All are .mov files and around 350k):

- Holiday Sweater
- I’d Bet My Life that You’d Bet Your Life
- The Bronze Beach Boys (Come on Let’s Go)
- Casimer’s clapping instruction
- Clapping into the last song

More Information:
- Pas/Cal’s Official Site
- An interview with Casimer Pascal
- Pop Matter’s review of The Handbag Memoirs
- Indianapolis Music Net article (includes some live mp3s)

Pastrami at Katz's Deli
Pastrami at Katz’s Deli, Lower East Side, Manhattan

I had my first pastrami sandwich tonight… at Katz’s Deli, of course.. they’re world famous for their pastrami. My thoughts? The first 6 bites are really delicious and after that it gets to be a little too much. I’m lucky that I split a sandwich with Masako… I’d never be able to finish! We also all shared a sweet potato knish that was really good.. and .. uh.. sweet. Almost like a dessert. Katz’s has this strange ticketing system where you get a ticket when you enter the restaurant and when you leave you pay. I heard that if you lose your ticket you have to pay them $50 because they would never know what/if you ordered. After I ordered my sandwich the sandwich maker was writing my charge on my ticket and as he wrote it he said “I should write my phone number on here!”. I was like “yeh.. um… NO!”

The title of this post is in reference to the classic scene in When Harry Met Sally where Meg Ryan “faked-it” at Katz’s Deli.
