Dinner at the Matsudas

Dallas’s family’s best friends on Kauai are the Matsudas. They live just down the road from where Dallas and his family lived and we try to see them every time we go back to Kauai. This year Aunty Nancy and Uncle Bob invited us over for dinner. When we arrived they were the only ones home and were watching their grandson, Swede, who was just born this year. Isn’t he adorable!?

We sat outside at picnic tables and drank some beer while eating edamame. Aunty Nancy was feeding Swede his dinner, poi with milk. No wonder he’s so big! Well, that and the fact that his dad is something like 6’5″.

Not much later, Uncle George (Uncle Bob’s brother) and Aunty Linda arrived. And then Mr. Hee came by.

For dinner we had Portuguese Meat. Maybe there is a more descriptive name for this dish, but Portuguese meat is what we call it. It’s kind of like pot roast, but way more vinegar-y. Aunty Nancy is Portuguese and knows that Dallas loves this dish so she makes it every time he visits. We had some other dinner, too, but the parts I remember are the desserts. This was the first time I ever had haupia cake, manju or homemade guri guri (I’d only ever had guri guri for the first time two days before).

And then finally, later on, Marissa and Eric, Swede’s parents, arrived with Swede’s sister, Safina. By that time it was dark and everyone was off in different directions. I wanted to take a photo of Safina because she has grown so much since the last time we saw her, but she was off on her scooter and taking a bath and had her own agenda going on. It was nice to be able to visit with everyone. On of these days we need to visit Tandy, Uncle Bob & Aunty Nancy’s other daughter, who now lives in the DC area. She and her husband Chris just had their first baby a few weeks ago. His name is Kai. We haven’t seen Tandy and Chris since their wedding, which seems like forever ago.

Getting blurry! Kidding. I was messing with John’s external flash.

Thursday night was our Roundarch client team holiday party and Friday night was our company holiday party. The company party was at Blue Water Grill, where Dallas and I went once for my birthday. We thought it was good, but overpriced. But when you’re company is paying for you to eat and drink for free all night, you kind of just concentrate on the yum factor. We had a full dinner, but I really liked the free maki station they had going on. I could have skipped the dinner and just eaten that all night! They also had the largest shrimp cocktail I’ve ever seen. So delicious.

Dallas is in West Palm Beach for work this weekend so I made a pact with my coworker Ryan that we would leave early. He had another party to go to and I wanted to call it a night at about 9:00 p.m. because the cookie party was on Saturday. The pact didn’t really work out. I think we were drinking too much and having too much fun to leave. There were secret ninjas refilling my wine glass when I wasn’t looking and we didn’t end up leaving until 12:30 a.m. I don’t know how long the party went on, but that was 6 1/2 hours of free booze and I had way more than my fair share!

rachelle_stephanie_jessica.jpgI didn’t realize that there’d be free birth control at Riley’s birthday party, but pretty much, that’s what 20 little kids who are mostly from 4 months – 4 years old running around like mad and screaming will do for you. The kids had a ton of fun though. It was Riley’s 2nd birthday and the party was at Gymboree, which is kid paradise. Tons of stuff to play around on and a crazy instructor lady who gets them singing and dancing and jumping and riled up, in general.

My brother brought my nieces, Jessica & Stephanie (on the left), so it was nice that I got to see them too. One of my old coworkers from when I lived in WI more than 6 years ago came to the party. I hadn’t seen Linda since Nancy’s baby shower and I hadn’t seen Bruce, her husband, for even longer. And I’d never even met her kids, Jacob and Joshua, before. So it was good to see all of them. So weird, though. I’ve seen so many photos of Jacob and Joshua that I feel like I’ve seen them grow up even though I never met them in person before.

Dinner in Waimea

Last week Tuesday we spent the whole day on the west side of Kaua’i, in and around Waimea. This is where Dallas lived. In fact, like last year, we were having dinner at the his parents still own, the house where he grew up.

First we had lunch at Waimea Brewing Company. They claim to be the world’s westernmost brewpub. Dallas had been to their restaurant in Seattle when visiting his brother there, but had never been to the original in Waimea. Pretty good food, I didn’t try the beer though.

Next we drove up to Koke’e Park to take in some views of Waimea Canyon. While we were up there we walked down this winding gravel road to see if we could locate a house that Dallas’ parents lived in after they first got married. A little had changed, but the building was still there. After driving down we tried to visit Polihale Beach because I’ve never seen it before, but it was closed “until further notice”. Later on we heard stories of some problems they’re having in the park with “aggressive hippies camped out”. Don’t know if that’s why the beach is closed or not, just a rumor I heard.

Jo Jo’s Shave Ice in Waimea is the best on the island so I had to be sure to stop for that. Dallas and I were inside and we had to pool all of our cash together to buy one $3.50 shave ice. Lucky for me he didn’t want any so I could get the upgrades – cream on top and mac nut ice cream instead of vanilla. Still I didn’t get away without him teasing me that there was only enough money for me to get shave ice, not him. But truthfully he didn’t want any. I guess growing up with the best shave ice shop on the island (or all of Hawaii) at the end of your driveway makes it not such a big deal.

For dinner there were about 25 people. It was great to see everyone one last time before leaving for Honolulu the next day. And the food. There was sooo much food. Between the pupus and the dinner and dessert this is everything I noted we had:

  • Boiled Peanuts
  • Seared Ahi
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Grilled Steak
  • Grilled Pork
  • Grilled Ono
  • Grilled Aku
  • Grilled Portuguese Sausage
  • Kauai Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Portuguese Meat
  • Lettuce/Veggie Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • White Rice (always!)
  • Chantilly Cake (is this local?)
  • Blueberry Cheesecake
  • Jello
  • Carrot Cake
  • Coffee Cake

The Announcement of Riley

Nancy, her stepmom, mom and mother-inlaw

Saturday I went up to Wisconsin for the day. Nancy and Josh are adopting and we knew it could be any day that they get the news that a baby is available for them, so in preparation Nancy’s family threw a shower for her. The big surprise was that just last Tuesday they were told that a baby girl in Guatemala is theirs. It will be a few months before they can go down and get her but this is such great news. Nancy and Josh have wanted children for so long and have tried so hard to have their own… I’m so happy they will finally have a baby, and one that is in desperate need of a good home. I can’t wait to meet Riley!
