Hawaii Day 1: Travel To Lihue

We are back from our much anticipated trip to Hawaii. Much anticipated, meaning we’ve been talking about this since I was pregnant, probably for about a year. It was Dallas’s 20 year Kamehameha Schools class reunion and we were for sure going. .. but… should we bring the baby, should we leave him home with grandparents? We decided to bring him. It’s free for him to fly right now, we spent a lot of time with friends and family, and he has to go some time. Might as well be now.

I was pretty stressed out about packing and how things would go and read way too much about it, but it all went pretty well. I guess you imagine the worst: The baby crying non stop for six hours on an enclosed plane with no where to go and people giving you the stink eye. But it wasn’t like that at all. People were really friendly, for the most part, and Makai was very well behaved. A little bit of fussing on each flight but not for long. He is pretty laid back, so we were lucky! We also used the pacifier whenever needed and often on the flights. This was a special treat for him, since we stopped using the paci when he was about 4 months old! While we were in Hawaii, we could buy anything we needed. It’s not like we were in a third world country where baby food and diapers are not available. So, that took a lot of pressure off too.

On the day we left we got up at about 3:30 a.m. to get ready. We woke Makai up last and got him ready then headed to Kristin’s house at 5:00 a.m. She was going to drop us at the airport and keep our car while we were gone.

There was a lot of round and round about the pros and cons, but we ended up luggage checking our car seat on every flight (for free) and gate checking the stroller (for free). This worked out great for us. We didn’t have to lug the car seat around the airport but we had it for all of our rental cars. And we could use the stroller for Makai right up until we boarded the plane.

We first flew from O’Hare to Phoenix via US Air (booked on American). In Phoenix, we met up with Dallas’s parents and flew from Phoenix to Lihue. We never flew in to Lihue from the mainland before and I really liked it. No stopping in Honolulu to take another short flight to Kauai. I especially liked it this time because we had a lot of checked luggage (big suitcase, medium suitcase, golf clubs, car seat) that we’d have to collect and move to the interisland terminal while juggling a stroller and Makai. I must admit, though… the four hour flight from Chicago was ok. .. but the six hour flight from Phoenix to Lihue was looooooooong. Like .. it felt longer than our direct flight to Tokyo. It was a long time to hold a baby in your lap and sit squished up in coach.

When we arrived in Lihue we got two rental cars – one for us, one for Dallas’s parents. Dallas’s parents went to stock up on things in Lihue. We headed right to Waimea. We did a little bit of shopping for Makai and then went to the house. We cleaned that up a bit and freshened up. By then we’d been up for 20 hours and I just wanted to crash but we ended up going to dinner at Aunty Nancy and Uncle Bob’s house. Luckily it was close. And it tasted like the best food I ever had. I was so tired and travel weary! We had homemade lau lau, lomi salmon, corn, rice, pineapple with li hing powder, and malasadas from Kauai Bakery & Cinnamon.

The big excitement of the night was feeding Makai poi. All of the babies in Hawaii get poi as one of their first foods and some people even put poi in the baby’s bottle. It’s supposed to be a baby wonder food, full of nutrients, easily digestible, and hypoallergenic. Makai made a face after his first bite, but he always does, and then continued to eat lots more poi. It was not the last time he ate poi on the trip!

That night Makai had a bit of trouble adjusting to the time change and woke up every two hours, which was kind of a drag, but luckily after the next day he was pretty much adjusted.. so it was actually a pretty short adjustment period: Just one night.

Hawaiian Thanksgiving with Billy and Ging Ging

Hawaiian-Themed Thanksgiving Dinner

For the holiday we went to visit Billy and Ging Ging in the East Bay. We’d originally planned on skipping all the traditional Thanksgiving food and just ordering Hawaiian platters from L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, but whattaya know? L&L is closed on Thanksgiving. So we ended up making Thanksgiving dinner, but still tried for Hawaiian style instead of the American classics.

Dallas and Billy took care of the meats: Kalbi Korean short ribs and chicken katsu. Ging and I made the rest. Mostly Ging, ok at least under her supervision. We made a chinese salad with ramen crunchies, a warmed spinach/cranberry/pecan salad, tofu, mac salad (with and without wahoo/ono), mashed sweet potato, and fresh pineapple with li hing powder. For dessert we made haupia and a pumpkin mochi.

Matt and Amy joined us for dinner. Made made lemon meringue pie and they brought a couple bottles of wine as well.

Amy wasn’t sure what Billy and Ging meant when they said we were having Hawaiian foods for Thanksgiving but when we told her the menu she told us she was looking forward to all of that more than turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes!

Ging and I prepared dessert plates for everyone. Each got a slice of Matt’s lemon meringue pie, a piece of haupia topped with chocolate pudding and freshly-whipped cream (kind of like haupia pie with no crust), and a piece of pumpkin mochi. The mochi didn’t really stand up to the sweetness of the pie or haupia, but when we ate it the next day on it’s own it was much better. The lemon mirengue pie was so delicious. I ate it for breakfast the next day too! And the haupia reminded me of Hawaii. I made it the night before. It was simple with a mix that Ging had from Lihue.

After dinner and after Damien went to bed we watched a couple of movies: Super 8 and 50/50. I saw 50/50 in the theater and really liked it. I thought Super 8 was pretty good too.

I love turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and pecan pie, but this was a good alternative dinner and I was glad we did it! Also, remind us to tell you the story about how Billy and Ging don’t have a TV but borrowed one (+Direct TV). And then Dallas and Billy had to configure it so we could watch the football games on Thanksgiving. Craziness!
