This was the 10th year in a row that we have gone to Dallas’s Aunty Gail’s house for Christmas dinner. My parents are visiting from Wisconsin this year and we contemplated not going, but in the end we did and dragged my parents along. I’m glad we did because it is so nice to see all of the family, including many who fly in and we don’t see very often. Of course, everyone made my parents feel right at home and they had a great time.

Last year Makai was just a baby. This year John was the smallest baby. Makai was running around and trying to get right in there with the bigger kids. That was fun to watch. He and his pal Hana are getting to the age when they can finally play together. When they were hugging I almost died. Cuteness!! Also, we keep Makai away from our stairs at home as much as we can, but at Aunty Gail’s tri-level home, there are a lot of stairs and they’re carpeted with VERY plush carpet and Makai would not hold back on going up the stairs. He’s a pro now.

Every year Aunty Gail makes beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole and her mom’s lettuce/mayo/crab/pea salad. It never varies. Dessert varies because other people always bring different desserts, but Aunty Gail always makes her signature cookies. Someone made brownies, my parents brought a tray of their homemade Christmas candy and Naoko made a delicious yule log.

Every year Aunty Gail reminds you a hundred times to bring your grab bag, “no junk!”. The gift exchange was a little more lively than it had been in the past couple years. Maybe because with my parents and Marty’s new wife, there were a few newbies. I just wanted the bottle of wine, dangit! My gift ended up including a bottle of wine, though, so that was nice.

Office Secret Santa Gift Exchange and Party

This year Meenasha took over the coordination of the office secret santa gift exchange and party. It’s grown so much since our first exchange in 2012. SO fun! I was excited to participate, since I missed out last year when I was on maternity leave.

I got Ashley’s name and I don’t know her that well, so I did “drive bys” down her desk aisle to check out her desk and stalked her social media accounts online. I ended up getting her a Star Wars moleskin (based on her posting the new Star Wars movie teaser trailer and also posting something on Field Notes), a Japanese pen, a santa spatula (because she said online that she bakes) and an Intelligentsia gift card (because she had a mug on her desk). She said it was perfect and was really surprised!!

My secret santa, Laura, knew I like to take photos because we were on an office photography committee together a few years ago. She also guessed correctly that I don’t have much time to fiddle with my DSLR camera lately, so she got me a selfie remote for my iPhone and also a telephoto lens that attaches to my iPhone. Awesome. I’ve been having fun especially with the remote.

Jeremy got a Bears chip and dip set and guessed that I gave it to him… but come on! I don’t spend my money on Bears merchandise!! What a fun office event. Can’t wait til next year!

Dallas’s parents were in town last weekend to watch Makai during all of Josh and Liz’s wedding festivities, so Aunty Laura had her annual early Thanksgiving dinner on the Sunday before they left. Last year Makai was so little we were almost afraid to have different people hold him. It was his first big party! This year he played with kids and visited family and ate SO MUCH Thanksgiving dinner. All of it: turkey, stuffing, ham, potatoes, green beans, cranberries and pumpkin pie! Such a big boy now.

Two funny points: 1. Rory asked to see Makai when we arrived so I took him over. Well, he didn’t really want to see Dallas! And ran away. 2. Makai was sitting on a kind of stool with some towels piled up so he could reach the table. One minute he was there, one minute he’d slid down onto the ground. He didn’t make a peep, so it took us a second to notice! I think he was too stunned!
