Hanging Out in Sausalito

November 29th, 2011 · No Comments

Dallas and I have each travelled around the Bay Area for work and have done all of the standard touristy things and have seen many of the sights. For something different one day Billy & Ging took us to Sausalito, which is just north of San Francisco. Sausalito is an area I always wanted to check out anyway, so it worked out good.

For lunch we went to Bar Bocce, a place that Billy and Ging had been with friends before. The weather was a little chilly, but Bar Bocce’s great outside space had a lot of heaters, so that was not a problem. I had the shrimp po’boy made with Bay shrimp and Dallas had some New England-style clam chowder. Dallas had leftover Thanksgiving kalbi and katsu for breakfast and wasn’t that hungry so he only had garlic bread with his soup. Oh, I also had some salt cod fritters with aioli.

I thought all the food was good. And the view of the piers with the sailboats docked was awesome. The cool thing about Bar Bocce is that you can play bocce while you wait for your food. So we did. Except Dallas. Party pooper. I discovered a secret bocce skill, though, and won 3 of 4 games against Billy & Ging.

After lunch Ging stayed with Damien to nap in the car, but Billy, Dallas and I went for a walk around Sausalito. What a charming little waterfront town with the houses all built up onto a hill and a nice little commercial area that attracts a lot of tourists.. like us.

Yee Tock Chee Park is a cute little area with great views of Angel Island and San Francisco. The last time that Ging and Billy were in Sausalito they kayaked from the shore to Angel Island. Sounds like something fun to do.

After we passed by not one, but two, Lappert’s Ice Cream shops (started on Kauai) and a Crazy Shirts store (based out of Honolulu), Dallas joked that he must be back home in Hawaii. We, of course, had to stop at Lappert’s. It’s not the same in California as in Hawaii, but they still had Kauai Pie ice cream, so it was fine with me!

We strolled around a bit more and then headed back to meet up with Ging and Damien, who’d just woken up from his carseat nap.

Family Dinner at Plantation Gardens

March 18th, 2011 · 1 Comment

This is going to sound weird, but after 7 years of dating, Dallas’s family and my family had never met each other. The thing is, we’re all spread out, living in 5 different states. So, I guess it’s not that weird. We knew that we didn’t want our families to meet for the first time at the wedding, so the night before the wedding, in liu of a rehearsal dinner or something like that, we had family dinner.

About 6 weeks before our trip, Dallas and I started brainstorming where to have dinner. Somewhere nice, but not too expensive. Good food, but not crazy food. Some place good for kids, since my nieces would be there. Our families are not huge, but there would be 13 people, so we needed a restaurant that could accomodate that. And it needed to be nearby where we were all staying in Poipu.

After going through every restaurant we could think of in Poipu and doing some internet research, we finally decided that Plantation Gardens would be the perfect place. They could seat us all in an open-air area overlooking the gardens, the entrees were moderately priced and looked delicious, they even had a kids menu, and they were located within walking distance from where we were staying. Done and done. I made a reservation.

So, we all met up at the restaurant that night. I already knew what I wanted to eat because I’d been studying the menu ahead of time! For pupus we ordered a few of the plantation-style samplers. This included a house-made bbq kalua pork manapua, shrimp spring roll, garden roll, and raw ahi tuna. For my entree, I got the chef’s trio, which was seafood lau lau, peppercorn rubbed skirt steak, and haku, a Hawaiian swordfish.

For dessert I had the baked Hawaiian, which was a play on a baked Alaska and was made of Lappert’s chocolate and macadamia nut ice creams on a fudge brownie crust with toasted meringue. Plantation Gardens also had some really tasty and unique tropical drinks. I remember liking the Lavendar Pina Colada (Lavender Cruzan Estate Rum, Absolut Karunt, Coconut Syrup, Island Fresh Pineapple Juice) and the Plantation Breeze (Absolut Mandrin Vodka, Crème de Banana, Peach Schnapps Passion Fruit & Guava Juice).

Turned out, dinner was perfect. The only thing I would change was mixing the seating up a little! My family sat on one side and Dallas’s family sat on the other side. One side of the table was really quiet and one side was really loud. I think you can guess which was which. But everyone got along and it was nice to get introductions out of the way before the wedding.

I was thinking about taking a photo of our families together but in the beginning of the night everyone was arriving and introducing themselves and it didn’t feel right. And then before dinner ended someone had to leave early to buy their wedding outfit! Nothing like waiting til the last minute! So, that would have been an incomplete photo. We got plenty taken at the wedding, so no matter, but here is one of Dallas and I at our house before we left for dinner.

Hanalei Valley & Lappert’s

March 17th, 2011 · No Comments

From Queen’s Bath, Jess, Ted, Richard, Amanda, and Stephanie went to Kilauea Lighthouse to watch the sunset. Paul Baker, Kate, Tien, Shannan and I decided to check out the Hanalei Valley Lookout….

…. and then, more importantly, stop for Lappert’s ice cream. As if there would be any doubt about it, I got the Kauai Pie, my favorite ice cream ever! It’s Kona coffee ice cream swirled wtih chocolate fudge, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts and vanilla cake crunch. Someday I will try another flavor, but not this day! This was my only Lappert’s on the whole trip!

- – -

On the first day of the trip some friends made a Costco run and we had them pick of several bottles of white wine and several of red. We were buying the wine for our wedding and needed to know which to buy cases of. During the week we had wine tastings and chose a white wine, but somehow we never tasted or picked a red wine.

Well, Jen didn’t go ziplining and just hung out by the Ho’Onani pool all day, so I assigned her the task of tasting the reds and picking one! Tough day for her! So, Jen texted me her choices and on the way home from the North Shore we met up with Dallas, Matt and Ross at Costco in Lihue where we bought a case and a half of our chosen white wine (Menage a Trois California White) and our red (Mirassou Pinot Noir). Yes, everyone had a menage a trois at the wedding!

Lappert’s Ice Cream

July 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Usually Dallas and I spend the bulk of our Hawaiian vacations in Kauai, but this time we were only there for two days, one night. We stayed at the house he grew up in, sleeping in his childhood bedroom on his and his brother’s childhood beds.. which was.. interesting.

When we arrived in Lihue we ran some errands, went shopping at and around the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, and had lunch at Genki Sushi. Then we decided it was time to get going to Waimea, where we were staying. On the way I made Dallas stop in Hanapepe so we could get my favorite ice cream in the universe: Lappert’s Kauai Pie.

lapperts

My favorite flavor is Kauai Pie, which is Kona coffee ice cream swirled with chocolate fudge, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts and vanilla cake crunch. OMG. So good.

Lappert’s ice cream is made right there in Hanapepe and the shop that we stopped at is the original. The ice cream is delicious. Dallas complained that it was expensive, which, it was, but this is a once a year (or more) kind of thing, so I don’t mind paying!

As far as I can tell, Matsumoto Shave Ice is a North Shore institution. It’s an old family business that’s been open since 1951, anyone and everyone in the general vicinity of Haleiwa, all sorts of famous Japanese and American superstars have been there and their photos are on the wall, etc. Dallas told me they have the best shave ice in Hawaii, and I won’t lie, it was really good, but I think I’ll always have a soft spot for Jo Jo’s in Kaua’i, where I had my first shave ice. Plus, they use Lappert’s mac nut ice cream, which is awesome.
