Brewers Beards

October 16th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Neither by brother nor my dad have shaved since the Brewers got into the playoffs. I’m not sure why. Some kind of good luck charm? Yesterday they both sent me photos of their beard progress. Looks like my brother is winning in bushiness, but my dad is winning in whiteness! My dad gets bonus points for sending a photo of himself wearing a Brewers shirt, although the Badgers were playing yesterday and maybe that’s why my brother is wearing red. As a side note, yesterday the Badgers killed the Hoosiers, 59-7, and remain unbeaten.

On September 23, the Brewers clinched their first division title in 29 years. Then they won the National League Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. My brother and my dad went to the first game of that series. You can see in the photo below, they had just started to not shave.

Currently the Brewers are battling the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League Championship. The standings are 3-2 with Game 6 at Miller Park today. I do not normally cheer for the Brewers, but since the Cubs are way out of it, maybe I’ll cheer for the Brewers as a second team. The Packers play the St. Louis Rams today at Lambeau. I hope WI can win over both of the St. Louis teams! Add in the Badgers, what a great time to be a Wisconsin sports fan!

Richard’s First Trip to Wrigley Field

On Saturday my brother Richard came down from Wisconsin and we went to see the Cubs take on the Reds. This was his first time to Wrigley Field. My brother is a big Brewers fan and goes to Miller Park many times each season, so the Wrigley experience was quite different.

We took the bus to the train to get to the park and before meeting up with Brian and Jill we took a walk around the park so I could show him the statues of Harry Caray, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. We even ran into the Cubs Dixieland Band. They were sitting just below us at the game too. Also, I just wanted him to see how different Wrigley is in that it sits right in a neighborhood. It’s not a big parking lot you drive into and tailgate. There people everywhere; streets closed; bars, restaurants, pop-up vendors; Billy Cub, the wannabe mascot; the rooftops. I think of Wrigley Field as very historic, like Lambeau Field. Wrigley is 97 years old. While Miller Park is very nice, it’s only 10 years old, so it just has a more modern feeling.

The Brewers are leading our division and the Cubs are so far behind that my brother didn’t really feel bad cheering for a Cubs win. And win they did! The Cubs had an 11-4 victory over the Reds. It was their 7th in a row win, which is the longest winning stretch since 2008.

Richard’s first Irish Car Bomb

During the game we played the dollar cup game (I don’t know what it’s called!). I think I lost more than I won. I remember Jill getting a bunch of doubles and taking out and Brian got a home run once and emptied the cup! At the end of the game there was a bunch of money left. I’ve only played this game once before and at the end we bought beer and wings. This time Brian suggested shots! We went across the street to Club 162 (the old Harry Caray’s) and were trying to figure out what to get when it was revealed that my brother never had an irish car bomb before. So, that’s what we got. And wouldn’t you know it? He finished first!

After this we walked over to Jill and Brian’s house and got Halle and headed to Retro on Roscoe. More on that later!

Packers Preseason Game

September 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

These photos are from a Packers preseason game I went to on August 28. My cousin Kelly and her husband Jeff had a set of four tickets and Jeff’s brother had another set of four tickets. Kelly and Jeff sat by Jeff’s brother and his girlfriend. I sat with my dad, my brother and my sister-in-law. Kelly and Jeff live in De Pere and won the right to purchase the tickets in some sort of Brown County resident lottery.

This was the last preseason game before regular season started. Our first stringers only played for one series, which resulted in a touchdown. After that, it was all secondary. The Packers ended up losing after a touchdown was reviewed and taken back. It didn’t really matter for anything, though. We still had a great time.

We parked in some guy’s front lawn. Somehow he fit about 6 or 8 cars on his tiny city lot. He told us not to worry about the flowers, so I’m pretty sure we were parked right on his wife’s gardening. I think we paid $10 for the spot. It was a short walk to Lambeau Field. This is my brother, Richard, my cousin, Kelly, and my dad, Rick, walking to the game.

Some people tailgating. Tons of tailgaters out, of course.

This was the entrance closest to our seats. You can see my sister-in-law, Amanda, in the lower left-hand corner.

Just before entering Lambeau Field. My dad, my sister-in-law, my brother.

The Don Hutson Center as seen from Lambeau Field. This is where the Packers practice. Once a long time ago, my friend Jessie and I went to see them train. They all ride local kids’ bikes back to Lambeau to shower and whatnot. Brett Favre was there, of course. I got my shirt signed by a player who never even made it one season, I think.

Looking back down on the entrance.

This was the first time we could remember seeing Coors at Lambeau Field. We were betting it was because of the Miller/Coors merger.

Me and my brother. We got the pom poms for free when we walked in. Some promotion. I can’t even remember now. Here are photos of my brother and I at Lambeau Field in 1999 and 2005.

Sums up how some people feel about the Favre situation.

Our tickets.

The field.

Amen!

If you look close you can see the wave. It went around a bunch of times.

Me and Amanda. Yeh, I had a few beers!

I’ve been going through these photos all day today getting psyched for the game tonight. I have to keep it in check, though, because they are playing the Cowboys. Dallas and I have an agreement not to get to crazy…. all our friends tease that someone will be moving out before the night is over, but we’ve survived 2 Green Bay vs. Dallas games so far in our relationship, hopefully we can stand another. Cross your fingers… and GO PACKERS!

The Packers Family Night scrimmage is a fun way to enjoy Lambeau Field for pretty cheap (tickets sold out in a couple hours but if you got them they were only $8). There was no score in the game, it was more just for practice for the teams. And just to be in Lambeau Field.. there’s nothing else like it.
