Coming down

I don’t know why I took so many photos on our helicopter tour with Inter-Island Helicopters, because I could have taken 3,000 photos and still not captured the beauty and magnificence of the trip. This was definitely the thing that I was the most nervous and excited for on the trip. It was a great experience, of course it was tinged by two helicopters crashing only days later, one of them being the helicopter we flew in, piloted by our same pilot. If you want to read more on that, see this earlier post (related posts where my photos were used on Hawaii news broadcasts here and here). Like I said there, I thought our pilot was great and informative and fun and safe. It’s too bad that the close proximity of the crashes tainted our ride. .. like not the experience itself, but how I feel about ever doing it again or recommending it to others.

I wasn’t going a good job editing out photos I didn’t like, I like them all… so see all of my photos here. Also, here are Allison’s short video clips taken during our flight – video 1, video 2.

One other thing, Puka Dog. John had become obsessed with trying a Puka Dog, which is a Hawaiian style hotdog. I’ll get into it more in a few posts, but on this day “Puka! Puka! Puka!” was kind of a mantra for us… whenever we were getting freaked out by the Helicopter or anything else we chanted it or said something about “Live for the Puka!” At one point during our helicopter tour John pressed the button to speak and asked Donald, our pilot, if he liked Puka Dog. Donald didn’t understand what he said and all the rest of us were just giggling. Donald was like “what? what?” so I pressed my button and said “He wanted to know if you like Puka Dog!” Donald sort of just rolled his eyes and said they were over rated. I think John started crying. Now what did we have to live for!? Kidding!

I don’t think calla lilies are indigenous to Hawaii, but these were just growing by the restrooms at Koke’e State Park. Crazy.

Everyone stops off at Koke’e State Park when driving up Waimea Canyon. It’s a good place to stop and take it all in and use the restroom, if needed. And it gives you a break from the windy mountain roads. Especially good for John, who was a little leery about even sitting on the same side of the car that the cliff was on!

A trip to Kaua’i would never be complete without a drive and hike up in Waimea Canyon, so that’s what Susan, John, Dallas and I did. For breakfast in the morning we sliced up a fresh pineapple, packed some for the day, and then headed up the west side of Kaua’i to Waimea.

Some of these photos were taken at Koke’e State Park and some were just taken at lookouts along the drive up the canyon road.

Dinner in Waimea

Last week Tuesday we spent the whole day on the west side of Kaua’i, in and around Waimea. This is where Dallas lived. In fact, like last year, we were having dinner at the his parents still own, the house where he grew up.

First we had lunch at Waimea Brewing Company. They claim to be the world’s westernmost brewpub. Dallas had been to their restaurant in Seattle when visiting his brother there, but had never been to the original in Waimea. Pretty good food, I didn’t try the beer though.

Next we drove up to Koke’e Park to take in some views of Waimea Canyon. While we were up there we walked down this winding gravel road to see if we could locate a house that Dallas’ parents lived in after they first got married. A little had changed, but the building was still there. After driving down we tried to visit Polihale Beach because I’ve never seen it before, but it was closed “until further notice”. Later on we heard stories of some problems they’re having in the park with “aggressive hippies camped out”. Don’t know if that’s why the beach is closed or not, just a rumor I heard.

Jo Jo’s Shave Ice in Waimea is the best on the island so I had to be sure to stop for that. Dallas and I were inside and we had to pool all of our cash together to buy one $3.50 shave ice. Lucky for me he didn’t want any so I could get the upgrades – cream on top and mac nut ice cream instead of vanilla. Still I didn’t get away without him teasing me that there was only enough money for me to get shave ice, not him. But truthfully he didn’t want any. I guess growing up with the best shave ice shop on the island (or all of Hawaii) at the end of your driveway makes it not such a big deal.

For dinner there were about 25 people. It was great to see everyone one last time before leaving for Honolulu the next day. And the food. There was sooo much food. Between the pupus and the dinner and dessert this is everything I noted we had:

  • Boiled Peanuts
  • Seared Ahi
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Grilled Steak
  • Grilled Pork
  • Grilled Ono
  • Grilled Aku
  • Grilled Portuguese Sausage
  • Kauai Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Portuguese Meat
  • Lettuce/Veggie Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • White Rice (always!)
  • Chantilly Cake (is this local?)
  • Blueberry Cheesecake
  • Jello
  • Carrot Cake
  • Coffee Cake
