Luau After Party in the Dorms

June 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment

As it got later in the night of the luau and nobody wanted to leave again. Everyone was having such a good time.

The band Kapena was playing again. They’d played the night before at the Gordon Biersch party.

The girls danced a lot and the guys stood around with their hands in their pockets trying to look cool. Just like high school.

These guys all lived together for years when they boarded at the school.

After the luau a bunch of people went up to the dorms where there was a big party going on. We passed by this bench where all of the boarders used to always hang out, so everyone got there photo taken there for old times sake.

Nobody can remember what spurred this, but everyone was going crazy in this next photo.

Dallas loves this fruit punch. Probably 0% fruit. He stole a whole bunch of it to bring back to the dorms.

Walking through campus for the first time in 15 years was quite a trip for a lot of people. When we got to the dorm there was food and drink as far as the eye could see. Many stories to be told and memories to be shared. There were at least 1 or 2 rounds of everyone singing the Kamehameha Schools fight song. Everyone stayed and hung out well into the morning hours.

It was kind of sad to finally leave. And to think the next day how far it was in between the last time Dallas saw his friends til now and how long it may be til we see them again. But if we all make an effort we will stay in touch, even if it’s just online. A hui hou!

After lunch, Allison, Susan and I hung out at the Sheraton Waikiki pool and drank more fruity drinks. I had a pina colada and a pina colada with macademia nut liquor (can’t remember what they called that drink) and some beer. Not all at once. John joined us soon after we settled in and Dallas joined us a while after that. A bit later Jordan stopped by with his friends Koa and Chad. Before I knew it, it was time for John and Susan to pack and get ready to go home. Our vacation was coming to an end. Frownface.

After lunch at Zippy’s we dropped Allison off at the Sheraton Waikiki, where she (and John and Susan, separately) was staying. Then Jordan, Dallas and I headed to the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, where Dallas and I were staying. We checked in, settled in with our luggage and whatnot, and headed for the pool. The Marriott pool is awesome. Actually, two freshwater heated swimming pools, nice cushy lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and waitress bar service right to your seat. And bonus!, the drinks were much cheaper the waitress realized that Jordan and Dallas were local boys and went to Kamehameha schools, where she also went. They talked about the school and the waitress knew their cousin Quincy, who was a year or two older than her. Awesome. A little later on Jordan’s friends Koa and Alan met up with us at the pool for a while to have a beer or two and figure out what we would be doing later on.

For dinner we went over to where Dallas’ Uncle Dee and Auntie Kathy live, the house where Dallas grew up in Waimea. It’s always fun for me to go back and see the house and imagine when Dallas’ family lived there. This time his sister and brother, Caroline and Jordan, were with us so we heard a few stories about things that happened there. Going over for dinner is a tradition I always look forward to when visiting Kaua’i.

I was also excited because the last time we saw Marissa was at her sister Tandy’s wedding and she and her husband were expecting their first child. And now it’s been so long since the baby was born. She has a little girl named Såfina who is more than a year old. So cute!

Uncle Dee and Auntie Kathy were great hosts and great cooks. They made dinner for all of us who were visiting and all we had to do was show up with beer. We got Guinness for Uncle Dee and Hinano, a Tahitian beer, for ourselves. These are all the things we had:

  • Barbecue chicken
  • Fried Saimin
  • Sushi with canned tuna (local specialty)
  • Kimchi
  • Poke
  • Lomi lomi salmon
  • Seared Ahi
  • Poi
  • Grilled chicken
  • Grilled steak
  • Lettuce salad
  • Macaroni salad
  • Fruit salad
  • Asparagus
  • Rice
