Canon Rebel XTi

I finally just caved in and bought the Canon Rebel XTi. I have been wanting it for years and now seemed like a good time with vacation upcoming. Also, I justified it by reviewing my photography income spreadsheet from last year and realizing that I could pay for it and accessories with the money I make from selling random photos here and there. It’s always unexpected money anyway, so why not stick it back into the hobby instead of just spending it willy nilly? Also, Amazon was having this amazing deal on the Canon Rebel XTi and not only that, but I got a free Canon Pixma photo printer with it. Along with a book and a UV filter and a case, I still paid about $60 less than the price of just the camera at a local camera store I was at last weekend.

So now I have a week less than a week to learn how to use my new camera before vacation! The good thing is that I’ve been using Canon cameras for years so much of the interface is familiar. I’ve been sitting down with this book every night just to get comfortable with the controls and things.. and big thanks to Tien, who’s patiently answered all of my questions and only laughed at me once, and that was at an unrelated issue.

We were talking about lenses and Tien brought up that I should probably be careful where I take my camera in Hawaii, since I’ve had a tendency to fall a lot. I got sort of peeved and told him the story about how last Friday Dallas was telling everyone how I fall down all the time. I got peeved then too and was yelling about how I haven’t fallen down for two whole winters! Then the next day we were walking to Kitsch’n for lunch and I went from standing to on my back in one second. It didn’t hurt so much as it happened, but was the kind of thing where I immediately thought “ohhh, that’s going to hurt later.” And it did. I’d landed right on the top of my bum/bottom of my back and had also caught my wrist and messed it up a bit. This was the part where Tien laughed! He said he didn’t but I know he did.

Every year my mom comes down and we have dinner and go see some sort of show. I usually treat the show tickets for her birthday and she usually gets dinner.. just because that’s what moms do? This year was delayed a month or so just because our schedules weren’t matching up. There weren’t a ton of “big” shows that were playing that we wanted to see, so we opted for Blue Man Group. Neither of us had ever seen it. I thought it was fun. It reminded me of Stomp a lot (I saw it twice) .. the style of it and the small theater.

Last year and the year before we saw Wicked and Mama Mia. When I lived in Wisconsin we did sort of the same thing, without the stay overnight part, and went to a Lorie Line concert and saw Riverdance.

The next day we went out for brunch at Kitsch’n . The Belgian waffles were plated in a way that reminded me of summer.. or maybe just Hawaii with the flower. Then we went shopping all day.

Jess was in town this weekend for a visit. She’s had bad luck coming out in the past, where she has had to cancel trips. The first time she helped me move here but had to rush back home the next morning for a family emergency and the second time she had her plane tickets all purchased and everything then another emergency came up and she had to cancel. This time, finally, it was all good. Good weather, great times.

Quick rundown of what we did – Thursday night we went out for dinner at El Tapatio. Note: If the waiter asks you if you want a JUMBO sized margarita, say “no” even if he says it’s a great value, which it is. Those things are both big and strong.

On Friday we went to dinner at Kitsch’n then went to a party at Erin’s house. There were more photos, but that snickers one is the only one that can be shared. Sorry. What happens at Erin’s house stays at Erin’s house.

Saturday we went to the Bongo Room for breakfast. Jess had a breakfast burrito, but I’m always tempted by the crazy pancake/french toast creations. Pictured above is the Chocolate Tower French Toast, which is composed of bittersweet chocolate chunk bread, maple marscapone, banana creme brulee sauce, bananas, and shaved chocolate. Afterwards we dragged our bloated stuffed bellies to Akira to try on clothes and shoes, which I wouldn’t recommend after binging like that unless you want to just stand there in an ill-fitting halter top going “oh, im so fat!” like we did. We headed home to rest since we only got a couple hours of sleep, got a pedicure and then went out to dinner with Dallas, my brother, and my sister-in-law.

On Sunday we tried to burn off all those calories by walking through Millennium Park, through Grant Park, down to Buckingham Fountain, then all the way up the lake to Navy Pier. Hopefully it helped a little! It was a nice relaxing last day.

We miss having Jess around already, but hopefully this trip convinced her she’s got to visit more!

Two Very Different Kitsch’ns

March 15th, 2006 · 5 Comments

When I was dogsitting in Roscoe Village it was a given that I’d go to Kitsch’n 1) because I love that place and 2) because it was only a couple blocks from where I was staying. Ironically, we had a Chicagoist staff brunch that same weekend and the place that was chosen was Kitsch’n, but the River North location that I didn’t even realize existed. I favor the Roscoe Village location because it’s the original, it’s kitschy, it’s cozy, and it’s easy to get to. The River North location gets props for not even batting an eye when we made a reservation for 15, which is usually crazy talk when planning a Saturday brunch, but it just doesn’t feel like Kitsch’n. It’s in the first floor of an office/condo building, the same building where fancy dancy Japonais is located. It’s big and wide open and has no kitsch. There’s sort of a loungey/diner feel. And it’s located in a forgotten pocket of River North that’s not the easiest to get to.

The menu is the same at both places. On Saturday at the River North location I had the Bayou Crabcake Benedict. I saw Joanna had the Coconut Crusted French Toast and it looked great so I had to try it on Monday at the Roscoe Village location. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. So good. BTW, I was totally NOT ordering the things that cheap-ass Rachael Ray got when she visited Kitsch’n for $40 a Day. I hate her and her voice and that show! I don’t care how cute a menu item called Green Eggs and Ham is, I’m not getting it!

Here are some photos from each Kitsch’n location so you can see the differences in atmosphere for yourself:
