CHIRP Presents The First Time: First Record

February 3rd, 2012 · 2 Comments

A few months ago Jess and I attended a CHIRP event, The First Time: First Date at Beat Kitchen. It was so much fun, we decided to go again and this time drag Sara and Loden along with us. (They actually wanted to attend the first time, but couldn’t.) The theme this time was first record. I knew one reader very well, Chuck, and a few others were friends of friends. There were several Chicagoists that I got to see and catch up with a bit. I missed the Hixx though! Oh well. Next time! (You better attend the next time, Margaret!).

Here’s a lineup of everyone who read essays about their first record:

John Morrison of Subism
Shawn Campbell of CHIRP Radio
Sabrina Harper of Second City
Whet Moser of Chicago Magazine
Jessica Galliart of Red Eye
Chuck Sudo of Chicagoist

Unlike last time when we were sitting front and center, this time we were in the back of the room. Not a bad view, but not great for taking photos, so I just concentrated on getting a good one of Chuck :) His essay was hilarious, one of the best of the night, I think.

Again, after each essay, the band played a song of the writer/reader’s choosing. Again, the band was fabulous. Gerald Dowd sang a version of Huey Lewis and the News’ Power of Love that I want to buy and listen to 10 more times. It was awesome!

I guess I have to settle for this version, by Huey Lews and the News!

The event was $10 and all proceeds went to benefit CHIRP. The next event is going to be in April. Follow CHIRP’s Facebook page to make sure you get alerted as to the exact date! You won’t want to miss it.

Hey, and the reason we were late and had to stand in the back? Super slow service at the Village Tap. Our favorite waitress, Carolyn, made sure to say hi to us and even remembered the exact last date we were there. But we weren’t in her section.

And the reason we went to The Tap? We meant to go to Kitsch’n and use a Groupon, but they were randomly closed on a Wednesday night? What the heck?

I got to Roscoe Village early and strolled a bit, on the streets and down memory lane.

My Backyard

Devil Duck
Devil Duck Fountain, The Village Tap, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Last night was the 3rd night in less than a week that I was at The Village Tap. None of the nights did I get really drunk or anything and two of the nights was kind of for dinner and all of the nights were outside on the patio breathing fresh air, but still, technically I was in a bar.

Last Friday night we met Michael and Cousin there and they brought friends and we invited more friends and all of a sudden we were 3 picnic tables full of friends. That was cool. Afterwards, Michael, Richard, Cousin, and Danny came over to our house and the big bet was made. Cousin has to grow a mustache, a Coustache, by August 10. Then earlier this week Josh and Dallas (can you believe there’s another Dallas?) were in town from CA and NY for a hosting conference (they’re Dreamhost cofounders). We went to Kistch’n for dinner then to The Village Tap for just one drink. Then last night I met up with some of the Chicagoist staff there for dinner and a couple beers. I don’t know what it is about The Village Tap. It’s so unpretentious and easy going. Plus it’s only a block from my apartment. And in the summer it’s so nice to sit outside and they have a really big garden that’s really accommodating. And the beer selection is great. And it’s really close. And it’s super close. And that’s the reason I refer to it as “my backyard.”

Btw, the photo above is of the fountain in The Village Tap garden.

DSW Makes Me Dizzy

DSW, Lakeview, Chicago

Until recently, I’d only been to DSW one time. It was with Lori and was out in the suburbs. I knew I needed to get some shoes for Molly & Eric’s wedding so I went online and looked up DSW locations and realized that the one in Chicago is right near the Belmont stop on the Red and Brown Lines. So, I went. I found a pair of versatile Nine West black dress shoes that worked out well and also got a cute pair of black & white Rocket Dogs for the spring/summer. Ironically, Lori met me there, so every time I’ve been to DSW has been with Lori. Afterwards we had dinner at Kitsch’n and went to Jen & Chad’s for a while.

On a side note, there was a pair of shoes I saw when we were shopping in Hawaii. They were also Rocket Dogs and had hula dancers on them and said “Aloha.” I didn’t buy them because I didn’t want to carry them in my luggage and then when I got home I looked at them on Zappos but I didn’t know if I still liked them or if it was a “vacation mode” thing. I saw them when we visited DSW and I really did like them, but they didn’t have my size. I went home and Zappos had one pair in my size left, so I got them.

Umbrella Drinks @ Kitsch’n, Roscoe Village, Chicago

It may look like we’re in Hawaii, but not yet. Almost. Tomorrow morning we’re leaving early. You should never have to call the night before and say “Hi, can I get a cab pickup for 4:15 am,” but we just did. We just got home from dinner and a drink (as you can see) with friends. Need to finish packing and then get to sleep and then…. we’re off. Finally.
