For Margaret’s birthday she and Evelyn, whose birthday is only a week or so later, rented out the basement of the American Legion Hall in Bucktown and had Rory Lake, of Karaoke Dreams, come in and had a karaoke party. Apparently the American Legion is where all the cool hipsters are hanging out these days. Dallas was psyched to go to the party. He sang 2 songs: Bust a Move and Ain’t Nothing But a G Thang. He submitted a 3rd song and we were waiting for it to come up, when surprise, surprise, my name got called. He tricked me and put my name in to sing Is This Love. I tried to protest and say I didn’t put my name in and that I didn’t know the song. All I could think of was White Snake’s song Is This Love, but it was the Bob Marley song and I was ok with that. I still didn’t really want to sing it but everyone was yelling my name and I sort of got peer pressured into it. It was ok. I needed that trick to get me to sing anything at all.

The party was a great time. Everyone was singing, the American Legion guys were funny, and it wouldn’t be Margaret’s birthday without yummy cupcakes from Alliance Bakery. Oh, also all the beer was only $2/can. That always helps.

This was our last night out as FeedBurner. We rented some space at Carnivale and gorged ourselves on Latin food and drinks. Dick toasted each employee. The toasts started out completely proper and nice but by the end of the night they were more like roasts! The party was fun and everyone is excited for the future, but there was still that twinge of sadness that our little group is all grown up.

Later on we went to Carol’s Pub because it was Thursday and that means karaoke at Carol’s! paulbaker wrote my name down for a song, but luckily I escaped around 1 a.m. before my turn came up.

The rest of my photos from the night are on FeedBurner’s Flickr photostream.

Carol’s Pub

Carol’s Pub, Sheridan Park, Chicago

After Minnies and Marquee Lounge, the group headed up to Carol’s. Joe and Chris are regulars there on karaoke night and showed us the ropes. I don’t even know where to begin describing Carol’s. Dirty? Smelly? It’s not a bar acting like a dive. It IS a dive. The old bartender behind the counter is named Jimmy. His belt says “Jimmy” on it. If you don’t make up your mind about what beer you want he’ll make up your mind for you. He’s missing some teeth. He shines a great big flashlight/spotlight on some of the singers. not the best singers, and no guys. Only girls with a couple big body parts.. None of the singers who are regulars there are really that great.. or even good.. so it gives everyone courage to take the stage. Oh, and when they aren’t doing karaoke, they play country western music. It sounds horrible, but we had a really great time. It makes you feel like you made a wrong turn and ended up in some tiny hicktown bar. Bear Creek anyone?

Here are a few photos we put on our company’s Flickr photostream and here’s one Matt had on his. Also, Chris has a blog that tracks his outings at Carol’s on karaoke night and here’s his post on our night.

Live Band Karaoke :: Quencher’s, Bucktown, Chicago

After Hachi’s Kitchen we went to Quencher’s. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in Chicago that hadn’t been there yet. Everyone always talks about how great it is and it is. We had a great time. They have so many beers there from all over the world. I was pushing my luck by asking if they had the Tahitian beer Hinano (they didn’t), but we were able to get Steinlager, a beer from New Zealand that we drink in Hawaii. That night at Quencher’s happened to be live band karaoke night. I had been drinking for more than 6 hours at that point and was pretty drunk, but not so much as I got on stage and sang, which is a good thing. At the end of the night Susan said we should all pick a song, practice for a week, and reconvene next Thursday night. The next morning I thought, “we’re not really going to do that.. ” but then I got an email from Allison and on the bottom it said “6 more days…. ” I’m in trouble!

After dinner at Zapatista, Chuck lead us over to Hot House. He works there so he was able to get us all the hookups. Thanks, dude! I’d never been to Hot House so I was excited to go and check it out. Really cool. Great atmosphere and great music. Bobby Matos & The NY Latin Jazz Allstars were playing. Awesome.

Tankboy :: Pontiac, Wicker Park, Chicago

At some point, Tankboy suggested we go to Pontiac. I didn’t really want to go to another bar, but I realized the going to Pontiac would get me closer to getting home easier. So we grabbed a couple cabs and headed up. I didn’t realize at the time, but it was live band karaoke night.

Alicia was the first to sign up and since Tankboy is a regular there and DJs there, he got her pushed up to the top of the list. She told me she’d be singing Bohemian Rhapsody and I was like “oh lord!” because I could just imagine the 1,000,000 ways to screw that song up. It seemed pretty easy to do, but you know what? Alicia worked that song. She was all over the stage, running around, in the crowd having them sing. She was killer. Justin sang a Talking Heads song that I wasn’t too familiar with, but he did a great song too. Justin is kind of a soft-spoken guy, most the time he’s got a button down shirt and dress pants on, with his hair nice and neat and his side part never out of place.. but I forget that he’s also a performer. He’s got a powerful voice and a great stage presence. When Tankboy said he’d be singing a song, too, I didn’t know what to expect. I mean, it’s Tankboy! He doesn’t sing, he DJs! Holy crap! He sang this psycho lyric version of Sweet Caroline that left everyone with their jaws hanging open. It was great. So much fun!
