Limey’s Going Away Pub Crawl

November 8th, 2011 · No Comments

Bernie, Vickie, Limey :: Rockwood Place

After 18 years in America, Limey Dave is leaving. His work Visa has expired and without a sponsor he has to go. We have done a few things over the past few weeks as part of Limey’s going away period – cooking class, dinner and football – but this past weekend was the big blowout.

Limes will still be here for a few more weeks and then he’s off to explore the world. I think he’s still unsure of where he’ll end up. I heard Australia and Asia are in the running, as well as England, of course. All nice places to visit, I hear, so I can’t wait to see where he lands.

Wrigley Field

Limey has lived in Wrigleyville the whole time he’s lived in Chicago, so for his going away party he coordinated a pub crawl around the neighborhood. As well, he’s always loved the Cubs so he chose to make the pub crawl baseball themed. Game time began at 1:20 p.m. with a celebratory shot and then we went to 9 bars around Wrigley Field, one bar for each “inning.”

Ted, Trent, Kevin, Chad, Danny :: Cubby Bear

Natalie, Limey, Annie :: Cubby Bear

Paulie & Limey :: Sports Corner

Dallas and I actually missed the first inning at Mullens, but made it for inning two at Rockwood Place. From there we went to Bar Celona from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Bar Celona opened the bar just for Limey, their most loyal customer, so we spent two hours here instead of one. From 5 – 6 p.m. we were at John Barleycorn, from 6 – 7 p.m. we were at Cubby Bear and from 7 – 8 p.m. we were at Sports Corner.

Ted, Dallas, Jen, Loden, Danny :: Yak-Zie’s

Here’s a secret: Limey’s shot only had Monster energy drink in it! :: Yak-Zie’s

Somewhere between Yak-Zie’s and Guthrie’s we saw this snowmobile and Sara and Jess had to get on it.

We were supposed to go to Murphy’s Bleachers next, but it was too packed to get in. Limey’s entourage was about 50 people strong and there was just no way we could fit in there. So, we were going to go to an alternate, Bernie’s Tavern, but we ended up going right to the next inning at Yak-Zie’s. The final inning, beginning at 10 p.m., was at Guthrie’s, of course, and we stayed there til close.

Eric & Kevin :: Guthrie’s Tavern

Sara, Jess, Rachelle :: Guthrie’s Tavern

Limey, Maria, Jill :: Guthrie’s Tavern

Time to go!!!

It was a fun day and great to see all of Limey’s friends come together. He is a great guy, which is reflected in how many people made a point to be there. We were taking over whole entire bars and making them open for business when usually they’re closed. It was such a fun day. Bittersweet. I’ll miss The Limes, but I know this will not be the last we’ve seen of him. Maybe he’ll even move back one day, who knows. Hopefully we can get to see him a time or two more before his actual move date.

Tech Cocktail 14

November 8th, 2010 · No Comments

The last week of October, Jessica and I went to Tech Cocktail. I think this is something like the 14th one they’ve held in Chicago? Back in 2006 our FeedBurner coworker Eric Olson co-founded the event with Frank Gruber and now it has its own conferences and parties in more than a dozen different cities. I just looked up on this rachelleb.. it looks like I missed the first Tech Cocktail, but I attended the 2nd, along with many others. Until last week, though, I hadn’t been to Tech Cocktail for years.

It was nice to check back in. Mostly the same scene. Free drinks. Ron May. In a wheelchair this time. Lots of people. Lots of tech startup demos. Here’s something that’s different: Sponsored by Sprint! Also, you now have to pay admission to get into the event.

About the demos we saw: A lot of them were some version of a daily discount site. One new company was doing ads in games. Their founder told us they were like AdSense but for games… which already exists, so I’m not sure I get that. Another had you sign up for a family style meal through a Facebook and then you’d show up and eat dinner with a bunch of strangers. One was a social wishlist kind of thing. Another had you type in something you wanted to and it would supposedly go out and find deals for you. I used the site as part of the demo and told it I wanted to take a sushi-making class. I know there’s a million places to do this around Chicago. Tech Cocktail was over a week ago. I still haven’t gotten my results from the site. Hm.

Jess and I talked briefly to Brad Feld, who we knew when he was involved in FeedBurner. And then for a bit to Frank, a Tech Cocktail cofounder we know. Frank said he thought that there were about 550 – 600 people there, so it’s good to know the event is still going strong!

TECH Cocktail Chicago 7

TECH Cocktail 7 was on Thursday night. Same song. Mostly the same people. Free beers. We did our normal routine.

Went to Bar Louie across the street beforehand to get something to eat then went to TECH Cocktail. This time Google was one of the big sponsors. They supplied everyone with Google pint glasses to drink their free beer from and some weird Google flashing light bulbs that I avoided.

I met a few new people, so that was neat. Also, Eric Olson moved back to Chicago. I hadn’t seen him for a few months so it was good to see him. And there were a bunch of people – his girlfriend, Laura, and a few others – who I hadn’t seen since his going away party in September, so neat to see them too.

Thursday night was TECH Cocktail. Since its inception, I’ve gone to every TECH Cocktail event in Chicago except maybe one or two. The difference with this one is that the founders, Frank and Eric, asked me to take photographs for them. Mostly of people coming in after registration and standing in front of the logoed Hollywood red carpet backdrop. If I took your photo on Thursday, go here to find it.

After about an hour or so at the door I met back up with Alden, Jessica, Justin Wardo, John, Traci and Joe, who I’d come with. I took some more candid photos but mostly just enjoyed the party at that point. Oh, and I won a $25 iTunes gift card. It’s interesting how many people I know at these events and how exactly I know them. I always see people I met through Chicagoist, people who read this site, people I did business with at FeedBurner and people from Google now too. Oh, and there are people I know just from Tech Cocktail events.
