Breakfast and Lunch

Yob Burger
Yob Burger (smoked Gouda, bacon, roasted red peppers and roasted garlic mayo) :: Kuma’s Corner, Avondale, Chicago

Today I accidentally double-booked myself for brunch. .. well, less like I accidentally double-booked myself and more like I planned to meet Margaret, Jim and Chuck for lunch at Kuma’s Corner at noon and then Dallas’ dad came into town last minute for the game tonight and we had breakfast at Wishbone at 10 a.m. So, I ate breakfast and met up at Kuma’s Corner, but didn’t have anything except a couple Two Brothers Brewery Dumaine DuPage beers. The menu said they were a good alternative to Fat Tire.. and they were. You should try this beer if you like Fat Tire.

Hate Beak Buffalo Chicken
Hate Beak Buffalo Chicken (spicy buffalo sauce, montery jack cheese, butter lettuce, tomato and red onion on a pretzel roll with a side of bleu cheese dressing) :: Kuma’s Corner, Avondale, Chicago

The photos here were taken at Kuma’s Corner. Jim had a plain burger (zzzz), Margaret had the Yob Burger (smoked Gouda, bacon, roasted red peppers and roasted garlic mayo) and Chuck had the Hate Beak Buffalo Chicken (spicy buffalo sauce, montery jack cheese, butter lettuce, tomato and red onion on a pretzel roll with a side of bleu cheese dressing). Actually, I think all of the burgers were on pretzel bread. Seemed like everyone liked their food.

Sadly, no one had The Goblin Cock, which looked to be a half pound burger topped with a quarter pound hot dog, pickles, sport peppers, cheddar cheese, bacon, pico de gallo, relish, onion, tomato, and celery salt mustard. And I guess you shouldn’t even think about asking for ketcup. Or ketchup either, perhaps. If anyone ever wants to try The Goblin Cock, let me know because I think a photo essay needs to be made of that experience!

And this is Chuck’s new bracelet, which he got with this promotion. It’s only cool because it’s actually retarded and Chuck is and ironic hipster. Kidding!

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s Ctrl-Alt-Rock event on Thursday night. I think it was even more of a success than last year. We had 4 bands play and I negotiated a deal with Goose Island to get a few kegs of 312 Urban Wheat donated. Double Door agreed to sell the 312 for $3/cup and I put up a $300 tab so all of the 312 beer was either free or only $3. The bands were really great and probably about 300 – 400 (??) people came out even though it was only about 3 degrees outside. It was a fun time!

More recap here and more photos here and here.

After dinner at Zapatista, Chuck lead us over to Hot House. He works there so he was able to get us all the hookups. Thanks, dude! I’d never been to Hot House so I was excited to go and check it out. Really cool. Great atmosphere and great music. Bobby Matos & The NY Latin Jazz Allstars were playing. Awesome.

Tankboy :: Pontiac, Wicker Park, Chicago

At some point, Tankboy suggested we go to Pontiac. I didn’t really want to go to another bar, but I realized the going to Pontiac would get me closer to getting home easier. So we grabbed a couple cabs and headed up. I didn’t realize at the time, but it was live band karaoke night.

Alicia was the first to sign up and since Tankboy is a regular there and DJs there, he got her pushed up to the top of the list. She told me she’d be singing Bohemian Rhapsody and I was like “oh lord!” because I could just imagine the 1,000,000 ways to screw that song up. It seemed pretty easy to do, but you know what? Alicia worked that song. She was all over the stage, running around, in the crowd having them sing. She was killer. Justin sang a Talking Heads song that I wasn’t too familiar with, but he did a great song too. Justin is kind of a soft-spoken guy, most the time he’s got a button down shirt and dress pants on, with his hair nice and neat and his side part never out of place.. but I forget that he’s also a performer. He’s got a powerful voice and a great stage presence. When Tankboy said he’d be singing a song, too, I didn’t know what to expect. I mean, it’s Tankboy! He doesn’t sing, he DJs! Holy crap! He sang this psycho lyric version of Sweet Caroline that left everyone with their jaws hanging open. It was great. So much fun!

The Birthday Boy :: Pontiac, Wicker Park, Chicago

Last night a bunch of us from Chicagoist met up for happy hour at Pontiac. It was time for our monthly get-together, plus Tankboy was having his birthday party at Pontiac.

Scott had issue with the way “bootie” was spelled on the menu. James, can we get a ruling here? After I ordered it and Margaret and Erin had a taste, they said they really enjoyed my Juicy Bootie.

When Chicagoist has and event we’re always happy to get a band lined up and some drink specials.. but Tankboy.. he’s a badass mofo. He shows up to his own party late, has $3 Bud Lights and $3 Makers Mark for everyone there, and gets 3 bands to play.

I was getting tired and thinking about going to work in the morning because I’m getting old and not fun, so I left at 10:30 before any bands had even started yet. Still, it was fun to see everyone. Also, TB, just so you know, all the girls were talking about how jealous we are of your lucious goldilocks.

Tankboy used to DJ at innjoy but told us recently that he’ll be at Pontiac now. On the way to Double Door, Erin and I saw a sign at Pontiac promoting this so I had to stop to take a photo.
