Hillshire Farm Sausage in Abundance

September 21st, 2008 · 17 Comments

Hillshire Farm, Jewel, Roscoe Village, Chicago

I don’t normally see Hillshire Farm sausage in the stores much in Chicago so when I saw shelves and shelves of it at Jewel last month, I took notice. My dad has worked at Hillshire for something like 30 years so I have a preference for their brand. Not only did they have all this sausage in all different varieties, but they were buy one, get one free. I stocked up a bit.

The sausages on the bottom and on the right.. in the loop shape.. what do you call them? Growing up we called them ring bologna, but it doesn’t seem like people here know what that is. I also think I remember that when we were kids there was an actual metal piece that connected the two ends? We grilled one of the turkey ring bolognas recently and there wasn’t anything connecting them. I guess the suctioned plastic wrapper keeps it in a loop now.

The cheddarwurst. What I wouldn’t have given for those 5 years ago… although I did smuggle some cheddarwurst from Wisconsin to Brooklyn shortly after.

Island Teriyaki Marinades

September 19th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Island Teriyaki Marinades, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Dallas and I love Soy Vay’s Island Teriyaki marinade. For a cheap and easy meal we marinade chicken breast all day and then stir fry up some vegetables and mix them together. We get these ginormous bags of frozen stir fry vegetables at Costco. I found the Soy Vay marinade originally at Whole Foods but they’re out of it most of the time when I’m there lately. So, I tried this other Kona Coast Island Teriyaki marinade that I came across at Cost Plus World Market. It was pretty good, but I still really love Soy Vay’s Island Teriyaki. Luckily, I noticed it tucked away near the barbecue sauce the last time I was at Jewel. I need to stock up in case Jewel sells out of it too!

$36 Well Spent at the Lincoln Square Farmers’ Market

Farmers’ Market Produce, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Back in Chicago means back at the Tuesday Lincoln Square farmers’ market. For $36 I brought home:

- 3 large portabello tops
- small portabellos
- raspberries
- blueberries
- cherries
- 2 sage plants
- green onions
- two types of zucchini
- yellow squash
- grape tomatoes (various colors)
- green pepper
- 5 ears of corn
- lettuce
- 1 free energy saver light bulb from the 47th Ward alderman Gene Schulter

Everything is so much better when you get it fresh from the regional farmers instead of shipped from who knows where at the supermarket. The berries were unbelievable. So flavorful. And the lettuce was so big and tasty. And the corn! So sweet and delicate.

I don’t think I wrote about this before, but I’ve spoken about it to a few people. I really like the guy in the mushroom stand. I’ve talked to him a lot about the different kinds of mushrooms he has. One day we talked about how portobello’s, the large ones, were actually a mistake. They were the little crimini mushrooms that were let go another 2 or 3 days and grew big, what we now know as portobellos. Then portobellos got to be so popular that they now refer to criminis as baby portobellos and sometimes charge more for them. This last time I was at the market the mushroom stand was crazy. Instead of the one guy there were 2-3 more people working the stand and giving out samples and stuff. They also sell a lot of canned mushroom dips, salsas and sauces that they give out free samples of. The mushrooms are grown in a greenhouse in Wisconsin.

I also went to Jewel later on to get a few more things so I could make this corn/avocado/tomato salad. We actually made this salad a lot when I was in Cape Cod and used the basil that Jessica’s uncle gave us. I don’t really have a specific recipe for the salad, but this is what’s in it. I just added enough of each til it looked good.

- 1 avocado
- 2 cobs of corn, cook & cut off the cob
- about a cup of tomato
- basil
- splash of olive oil
- salt
- pepper
- juice of one lemon

I’d gotten the corn and tomatoes at the farmers’ market and I grew the basil on my patio.

You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

Killian and Liz are surrounded by very artistic family and friends so it was no surprise that the music at their wedding was fabulous. Liz’s brothers Greg and Bill are really talented musicians. Greg has even toured with and recorded albums with Liz Phair, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Jewel, to name a few. For the wedding the brothers reunited their old band called Touche and played a whole set of 80′s crowd pleasers. You better believe that Dallas was their biggest fan!

Also, a few of Killian’s friends are really great DJs and took turns playing throughout the night. Imran (DJ Skor) played at dinner and before the band went on. Max played after the band and then Imran played a little more at the end. Everyone was so great. All of the guests danced like crazy.

Laughing Cow: Real or Fake Cheese?

May 27th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Laughing Cow at Jewel, Roscoe Village, Chicago

At my local Jewel, Laughing Cow used to be located in an unrefrigerated aisle next to all the other fake cheese – the Velveeta, the Cheez Wiz, etc. On a recent trip to the supermarket it wasn’t there. I couldn’t find it anywhere. Then I had an idea: Maybe it was by the real cheese? And there it was. In the refrigerated section that houses all the fancy cheeses. Wikipedia says that because of the pasteurization process, Laughing Cow wedges don’t have to be refrigerated. Do you think Jewel put them there just because people had trouble finding them?
