Our First Thanksgiving Turkey

November 28th, 2010 · 3 Comments

This year for Thanksgiving Dallas and I decided to try to make our own Thanksgiving dinner. I’d made Thanksgiving dinner with Kelly and Jeff and Aunt Sue many times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), but I never made the turkey before. We started out by brining the turkey overnight in a mixture of salt, broth, orange juice, and spices.

Jeannette used to make a pre-Thanksgiving feast when I lived in New York, so I asked her for some turkey guidance and she delivered! She sent us all kinds of tips, mostly from Cooks Illustrated.

We quickly learned that the big secret is….. BUTTER! Buttering the skin. Dallas also lifted the skin a little and shoved butter between the skin and the meat.

After the first check, this is what the turkey looked like.

We rotated it on all 4 sides to get even browning. Each time we rotated, we applied more butter.

And then one time we cut off some fresh sprigs of rosemary and stuck them in.

More butter!

Finished. Perfectly browned skin.

We stuffed the turkey with onions, carrots, celery, thyme and rosemary.

I made some gravy with the giblets.. another recipe from Jeannette. Dallas browned the bits in the pan so I could add them to the gravy. By the way, this gravy was kind of a pain and took a long time, but it was like the best gravy EVER.

Dallas then carved the turkey.

And we could see that it was cooked perfectly all the way through.

This was our whole Thanksgiving dinner.

I’ll have a few recipes to share in the upcoming weeks. As for the turkey? It was SO good. Very moist and flavorful. All in all, we agreed that this was one of our favorite meals we’ve ever cooked together. I know we won’t cook Thanksgiving dinner every year, but it’s nice to know that we can!

Visiting Cousins

August 16th, 2010 · No Comments

This weekend my cousin Kelly and her family visited Chicago and stayed overnight at our place. Dallas was in Vancouver for work, but my parents and my nieces also stayed over, so it was a full house. My brother and Amanda also visited for the day Saturday. Kind of crazy. Kelly’s kids are 4 years old, 2 years old and 11 months old. My nieces are 8 years old and 14 years old. Like I said, crazy!

Tessa is the 4-year-old. She is getting to be such a big girl who can help you out with things and play on her own. I can’t even believe she’s so grown up already. Seems like not so long ago, Kelly and Jeff lived in Virginia and I flew out when Tessa was born. But, I guess when I think about it, a lot has happened since then.

Tessa has a great personality. Very outgoing and fun. She and my niece Jessica are good buddies, even though Jess is 3 years older. They ran around and played so much this weekend. Both at Haas Park and around the house. Here in a rare moment, sitting still. Let’s put these girls to work!

Like I said, Tessa is a good helper. And so is Jessica. Tessa likes you to tell her she’s a good helper and is proud. I think Jess is a little over it and can’t be fooled so easily, but she is a good girl so she chips in too. They are both well-behaved and were excited to go outside and help me water plants on the patio and roof deck.

The watering pitcher was a bit heavy, but once I emptied a lot of it on some taller plants, Tessa was happy to help with the lower plants. We played a lot of games this weekend and it was fun to see Tessa. It is also nice to see how much fun she and Jess have when they get together, even if it’s not as often as everyone would like. They bounce right back into it like no time was lost!

Tess and Jess (rhymes!) were running around so much, that I didn’t get good portraits of them like I did of Tessa’s sisters. For a while on Sunday morning they were just chilling out on the couch.

Charlotte is 2 years old. She loves her Dora! Actually, she loves Boots. I am still getting to know Charlotte. She is very much attached to Kelly and Jeff, so I haven’t gotten to interact with her as much as Tessa and Margo. I did learn that Charlotte loves water.

At the park Charlotte was the first to run into the sprinklers and get wet and probably the one who stayed in the water the most. Char was also outside while we were watering and was not shy about getting her feet rinsed off and taking drinks from the hose. And then there was the bath! Charlotte, Jessica and Tessa took a bath in my big jacuzzi tub and had a blast. Jets and bubbles and plastic bowls. Lots of splashing. Charlotte was sticking her head under the faucet and taking drinks from it. So funny. I think when she was in the water was when she was happiest this weekend! She is going to be a great swimmer.

Unfortunately, Charlotte was not feeling well on Saturday. And she is 2 (enough said), so she looked at me like this a lot. Angry eyebrows! I know she will grow out of it, though. I look forward to seeing her next time! I hope she feels better!

Finally, Margo. The baby. She is not even 1 year old yet.

Margo is a good baby. She does not cry too much and, right now at least, she is not too shy about other people holding her and giving her bottles and stuff like that.

She is standing up and learning to take steps right now. She is not hesitant about trying to go for what she wants. Margo will be running around in no time!

I missed out on photographing Superman, but here’s a photo of Wonder Woman: Kelly!

Actually, I didn’t take this photo but found it on my camera. I don’t know who took it, but I’m going to guess it was my mom. I don’t know if Kelly will like this photo of her relaxing with Charlotte on Saturday night, but I think it’s a great, honest photo of a good, strong mom. Plus, what a cute summer haircut! I don’t know how she keeps it together on a day-to-day basis with 3 kids aged 4 and under! Jeff too. I think at this point they must just be playing defense because there are more kids than adults. I don’t think I could do it, so I am in awe that they are still at least somewhat sane. And, I can totally get how Kevin accidentally got left home alone now!

Everyone (9 people) left my house at about the same time on Sunday and I didn’t even know what to do with myself. The previous 24 hours had been non-stop action and the silence was deafening! It whirlwind visit, but so great to see everyone. We don’t get to see each other nearly enough, so I always look forward to our visits. Looking forward to our next already!

Logan Square Farmers Market, Roscoe Village Garden Walk, Burger Fest & Soccer

July 12th, 2010 · No Comments

On Sunday morning I met up with Jess for a quick run through the Logan Square Farmers Market. I was having problems finding a parking spot for my bike, when I ran into my coworker Jeff and his wife Khloe. They had a booth and let me lock my bike there, so problem solved! At the Farmers Market I knew what I needed: tomatoes, lettuce and berries, so I pretty much got it and left. I was also keeping my eye out for Rare Bird Preserves, but I don’t think they had a stand this week. Oh well. Maybe next week. I purchased their rhubarb/strawberry preserves at the market a few weeks ago and we just cracked them open. So good!

I rode by The Rocking Horse, around the corner from the market, and noticed they now have a pole sticking out of the building, and the pole basically is up the arse of a rocking horse. Do not like! You’re telling me the huge sign that says “The Rocking Horse” was not enough? They literally had to attach a big rocking horse to the building?

After the farmers market I headed to Roscoe Village. Jen and Quinn and I went to a few houses on the Roscoe Village Garden Walk and went to Roscoe Village Burger Fest, which was just a few blocks from their house on Belmont between Damen and Leavitt.

Burger Fest had a large kids section that we took Quinn to. Unicoi Art Studio, a children’s art school located on Belmont and Hoyne, had a booth where kids could do free art projects. Quinn made a beard & mustache on a stick!

Quinn also went on a few inflatable bouncy things.. a pirate ship and a kind of maze one with a climbing wall and slide at the end. They probably had like 6 of these structures set up, but they were charging $3 to do on each one, which is a total rip off. There were a bunch of kids having melt downs because they wanted to go on every thing and you had to buy a $3 ticket for each one, which a lot of parents, including Jen, were not going to do!

After this we decided to get lunch. We tried sliders from The Bad Apple and Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. The Bad Apple definitely had the better burger, but Mrs. Murphy’s won us over with Guinness ice cream! Since we were having lunch by the ponies, Quinn wanted to take a ride after lunch. I always feel a bit sorry for ponies that just walk in circles all day. I don’t think they have a good life, but they sure do make kids happy.

I walked around the circle with Quinn. We talked about which pony was his favorite and how soft the pony’s hair is. Quinn asked “What is that smell?” (poop) and “Why did we stop?” (pony pooped). We talked about what a Buzz Lightyear obsessed boy might name a pony (Buzz Ponyyear or Pony Lightyear or Buzz Lightpony). I tried to avoid questions like “what is that down there?!?!” (while pointed between the boy pony’s legs).

On the way home we stopped off at a few houses to check out their gardens. When we got back to Jen and Chad’s there were 10 or 12 friends gathered in the outside living room to watch the soccer game. Jen and Chad’s house was part of the Roscoe Village Garden Walk so all afternoon they had visitors coming in to look at the yard and then asking what the score of the game was! Spain won, which I guess is good because Brian had put money on them for Dallas when he is in Vegas so he should be getting some kind of pay out. Later on we went back to the fest til it rained, then played cards in Jen and Chad’s garage til it stopped raining, and then went back to the fest to see the Gin Blossoms until it thunderstormed and then we left, thoroughly soaked.

Roundarch 10th Anniversary Champagne Toast

June 16th, 2010 · No Comments

For some reason I thought I’d posted these photos, but I didn’t! On June 4th was Roundarch’s 10th anniversary. To celebrate, everyone gathered, Jeff and Geoff, our founders, said a few words and we all had a champagne toast. Supposedly each office did this and took a photo of everyone in the office, although I’ve only seen photos of the Chicago office.

Danny & Caroline’s Wedding Shower

May 24th, 2010 · No Comments

On Saturday Aunty Gail, Heather and Naoko hosted a family wedding shower for Danny and Caroline in Schaumburg at Heather & Jeff’s house. It was fun and relaxing. We drank an endless supply of margaritas, ate Mexican appetizers and for dinner had some great takeout from a local Mexican restaurant. I finally got to meet Caroline’s parents who came down from Wisconsin. Mostly it was just fun to hang out with everyone, especially Danny and Caroline. We don’t see them nearly as much as we used to because Danny’s restaurant schedule doesn’t really coincide with anyone elses. Danny & Caroline’s wedding is in just about a month exactly. Excited for the big celebration!
